Time For The Army?

RisingSunn · 04/08/2024 16:18

I’ve just seen footage of rioters setting fire to the Holiday Inn in Rotherham and actually running inside.

What are they planning to do - beat or kill every migrant family?

Its just awful. Is time for the Army to be brought in?

Incorrect.

What the police do for riot control has been learned from the British Army who actually stage riots on camp. So, soldiers are trained to handle riots lasting hours and being disciplined to follow only orders.

Exactly

If they are happy to use the army on citizens, maybe they should consider navy gunboats in the channel, you know..2 warning shots, then if not turned back a direct hit.
For those about to explode...I'm not serious!!! I am uncomfortable about the military being used, though, that should be reserved for mass civil unrest bordering on civil war.

I'm not sure about the Army but these thugs should be sent to prison in Rwanda or stuck in small boats in the North sea to see how they cope. We don't' need these people in the country.

They've every right to be here though ?

Yeah why would we want our borders protected anyway ??

That is actually a great idea. I’d be more than happy to send a few hundred EDL tossers to hostels in Rwanda. It’s a very orderly and reliable place.

Who cares. They are scum bags who we could do with removing. Stick them in a Rwandan prison for a bit and it might make them appreciate it. Rwanda's a safe country don't forget. They can come back when their sentences are done.

lollipoprainbow · 04/08/2024 21:08

@Beekeepingmum Does that go for all the other rioters or just the white ones ??

All of them obviously. Why would it just be the white ones?

cavepainter · 04/08/2024 21:15

@Rummly yes the army are used to back up the BTP on a regular basis- there are fewer armed police in the Met now as they have basically gone on strike and are working strictly to rule since prosecutions have been brought against them.

I don’t disbelieve you. I’m just surprised. I’ve never seen a soldier on duty at any tube station or on any train.

Does the BTP have armed officers, or was that a function carried out by the Met on the underground?

They've every right to be here though ?

As do all British citizens whatever their skin colour, as do the asylum seekers who have met the conditions of entry to this fair country.

Let’s not forget that the excuse for this awful thuggery stemmed from a crime committed by someone born in Cardiff. The fact that he has got black skin has led these mindless, senseless morons to go on the warpath, fuelled by social media and Farage and his party’s rise.

LuluBlakey1 · 04/08/2024 21:34

We need a fortnight of heavy rain

completeworks · 04/08/2024 21:39

Anyway, what good would the army be - they're not trained for these situations, unlike the police.

The most stupid thing I've heard in a long, long time!

Lovemybunnies · 04/08/2024 21:41

This is not the military’s role in the UK.

Lovemybunnies · 04/08/2024 21:41

This is not the military’s role in the UK.

There is provision for it on the statute books. It is very much the military’s role if those that can make the decision deem it necessary.

cavepainter · 04/08/2024 21:47

@Rummly yeah the Met provided armed support, they don't do it now. I was surprised to hear on R4 a few months ago that the firearms unit only deploy in absolute necessity now.

LuluBlakey1 · 04/08/2024 21:34

Yes, we do, for public order. Just a shame that we wouldn’t be able to enjoy some decent weather without thug-fest taking over.

Yep! I was thinking this exact thought earlier @Beekeepingmum

You either can’t read or are just mischievous.

Starmer sounds like a nervous vicar, not a barrister and Prime Minister.

The “grown ups” line has already got very tired and worn-out.

Yes, 'the grown-ups' line has indeed become boring twaddle.

I don't dislike Keir Starmer and I'm not criticising the way in which he spoke, but I think he trotted out the 'fourteen years of Tory chaos' several times in the run up to the election. The boring cliches brought out by all parties were equally boring cliches.

CheatingMenz · 04/08/2024 22:40

Kebarbra · 04/08/2024 16:51

Starmer has given a press conference saying he isn't scared to call it far right thuggery, are you expecting them to take actual tangible actions as well as giving meaningless press conferences?!

Getting the military in (always the Army never the RN or RAF isn't it) would esculate things, absolutely should have planned for an escalation and police resources should be ready to deploy from other areas though- why isn't this happening? Shame we don't have Boris' water cannons to immediately get the area dispersed.

Johnson bought the water cannon with having permission to use them. Idiot.

DownNative · 04/08/2024 22:42

Lovemybunnies · 04/08/2024 21:41

This is not the military’s role in the UK.

The Armed Forces aren't just there for defense of the realm, you know. They're also there to back up the civil powers when needed, assist in humanitarian efforts globally and also assist in national weather related emergencies such as severe flooding or taking over the role of medics & firefighters when required.

The Armed Forces do more than many people in the UK think.....

I was thinking this earlier. Bloody English weather always doing the wrong thing!

NewGirlinClass · 04/08/2024 23:49

If the Army was used I think it would annoy the police, they say they can manage the situation.
It would also cut down their overtime pay.

mpsw · 05/08/2024 07:04

NewGirlinClass · 04/08/2024 23:49

If the Army was used I think it would annoy the police, they say they can manage the situation.
It would also cut down their overtime pay.

The way it works is that the military (probably army) can only be deployed in UK on UK policing tasks if the police request it and a formal request is made by the Home Sec to the Defence Sec.

Even in NI, it's not imposed by the military, but by the relevant government department.

So even though there might be some coppers who feel annoyed, their annoyance needs to be directed at senior police chiefs, as without their say-so, this cannot happen (unless senior politicians made a brave choice to over-rule them when there would be a paper trail - that's "brave" in the Sir Humphrey sense)

Weather forecast still wet?

Starmer's administration might not have set the conditions for these riots (similar to Cameron/Clegg who hadn't been in for that much longer after 13 years of Labour for the 2011 riots) but as in 2011, his effectiveness will be rated on how effective the containment of these riots is. It is right slap at the very beginning though (rather than a few months in) which makes the test harsher
