Repeat of 2011 Riots looming?

Awful news from Southport, my heart goes out to all involved and the communities. Shocking.

Can’t help but think after watching BBC News this evening that with Downing Street Riots, Manchester and now Hartlepool, that we’re now heading towards a repeat of the 2011 riots?

OP posts:
Deepcalm · 31/07/2024 22:13

Yes, I agree. It’s very concerning

ToffeeSquirrels · 31/07/2024 22:16

Not forgetting the riots in Leeds.

clearmoon · 31/07/2024 22:16

no, it is the same people being bussed around - very small percentage of the population support EDL. And people remember very well what happened in 2011 - everyone involved was slowly tracked down and prosecuted, and crime went down as so many offenders were behind bars.

The young people I knew who had taken even the smallest part of the rioting and looting, just had to carry on their lives knowing the police were edging closer and closer to them all the time, and that they would eventually be arrested, one day, in days or weeks or months - many cracked and went and handed themselves in.

People know now, they will eventually be tracked. They cant just perform a hit and run and think they will get away with it

Luminousalumnus · 31/07/2024 22:17

Yes. The riot in Southend last night was absolutely fucking horrendous and there will be another one here on Saturday it seems. Only six people arrested out of the 1000s that desended on town. Police hopelessly outnumbered and none of the machete weilders caught. People are rightly mightily pissed off and then certain sections of society seem amazed that we have riots outside Downing Street tonight.

blossomismyfriend · 31/07/2024 22:17

It's the summer, people are overheated and short tempered.

INeedNewShoes · 31/07/2024 22:17

I had the same thought earlier. It's really not helped by the heat which I feel as though may have been a factor in 2011.

I feel dreadful for the locals in Southport. This is the last thing they need. It must feel really scary.

That was always my mum's theory.

I was in Brixton for their summer riots and it was a very hot and sticky in the evening.

Appalonia · 31/07/2024 22:24

Agree, except that this time it's a very different group rioting. I'm genuinely worried that the attack on Southport has ignited a fire that has been bubbling along for a long time. Just look at how many voted Reform for in the election, 4 million pp was it? I see how angry and frustrated pp are on Twitter and it's just being ignored, or, more likely being played down by both politicians and the MSM. You can write these people off as right wing, or thugs, but this isn't going to go away and it's going to get worse. Genuinely afraid for this country right now.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 31/07/2024 22:27

I can't see anything on the bbc about Downing Street?

hiddeneverythin · 31/07/2024 22:27

I bloody hope not

They'll go back into their box eventually. This country has no taste for genuine revolution. These things are short lived.

And the Telegraph, Sky, The Mirror, LBC....

NeverDropYourMooncup · 31/07/2024 22:34

I live in one of the 2012 areas. These EDL twats aren't going to riot here.

The shops with expensive goods pretty much all closed down, so there's fuck all for them to nick this time.

It's the summer, people are overheated and short tempered.

And have been sitting out in the back garden/front of Wetherspoons drinking since 9am. People are more likely to think putting the windows through of a local place of worship is a good idea after ten pints of Stella.

I fully agree
In the short term, let's hope for rain before the weekend.

Douglas Hurd mentions a warning he received as Home Secretary that a long hot summer meant trouble (01:18 into the documentary).

Is it the EDL rioting in Southend? The Machete gangs causing the trouble aren’t their usual following.

And it seems a much more attractive prospect when you're not being rained/hailed on. So not only are people overheated but being at home, inside, not rioting, is much more tempting in the winter than in the summer. Same for some people having enough time off to get Really Bored.

You need a critical mass to create disorder and you're more likely to reach that critical mass in the summer.

Appalonia · 31/07/2024 22:48

Just look at Downing Street on Twitter and you will see what's been happening. More protests are planned. This is not going to go away.

Yes Reform got 4 million (about 8% of the electorate), same as UKIP got 4 million in 2015. They haven't progressed in ten years, and in 2024 all conditions were in their favour and they still couldn't do better - they've peaked.

It's easy to think people like that are an increasing majority, but in fact they're just a very noisy minority - although of course one that can do a lot of harm given they tend towards violence and are easily led by increasingly toxic social media of the kind which has spent the last two days spreading obvious lies

"Just being ignored" - yes, irrational rumour peddlers should be ignored while the authorities get on with the boring business of investigating the crime and following due process. We are being told what is known: should they instead waste time issuing statements to appease shit-stirring scumbags like Tommy Robinson and Darren Grimes? The likes of them would hardly just accept them and go "oh right, thanks" anyway, would they? They'd just use them to further push their own dishonest aims

And finally - angry and frustrated, their concerns need addressing etc. Oh please. Come on. These people don't have legitimate concerns, they don't give a shit about children being killed, if they did they wouldn't turn up outside those kids' already traumatised friends' houses and terrorise them by getting pissed up, smashing up buildings, attacking police all while shouting football chants. They do these things simply because they are thick, nasty, racist hooligans who just want to grab any chance to express the hatred the already have, and people like you and the many others who make the points you've made are their useful idiots

I would very much like to send these people to Rwanda

Ilovetowander · 31/07/2024 23:01

I think the rioting is opportunistic, fuelled by extremism. I don't think the rioters will overlap much with reform. The existence of Reform is a good thing as it provides people with a legitimate way to register dissatisfaction and this de-escalation as people feel they have an outlet

No of course not the EDL! Rioters come in all shapes and sizes.

It sounds like you are accusing me of being a racist. I'm absolutely not. I'm just posting what I've seen trending on Twitter. And as I said, I'm genuinely worried that this unrest is going to escalate. The last thing I want to see in this country is full scale race riots. I'm 59 and I remember race riots in the late 70s and it's starting to feel reminiscent of those times....
