Repeat of 2011 Riots looming?

Awful news from Southport, my heart goes out to all involved and the communities. Shocking.

Can’t help but think after watching BBC News this evening that with Downing Street Riots, Manchester and now Hartlepool, that we’re now heading towards a repeat of the 2011 riots?

OP posts:

@Mumandcarer80 I really don't think we need water canon on the streets of the UK. This isn't China or Russia.

The police are more than capable of dealing with a few thugs and trouble makers. They are forewarned, and should be working with councils now, to manage events that will disperse trouble over the August bank holiday weekend.

I don't think the OP needs to worry too much.

Hmm you think so. It's bank holiday weekend so there will obviously be alcohol involved. You can't solve violence with more violence. 6 people died in the London riots. Which was triggered by the death of one lad.

LaeralSilverhand · 02/08/2024 09:28

No they didn’t. The U.K. doesn’t have any water cannon and the army are not deployed against civilians in GB (NI is a different matter).

Honestly, the rubbish people make up.

I assumed it was the opening lines of a novel, although perhaps the quality of writing needed some work.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/08/2024 10:27

They need to get the army in get the water cannons on them. That's what they did in the London riots.

No - you're misremembering. Boris Johnson as London mayor bought some in 2014, they hadn't been licensed for use in the U.K. so weren't used, Theresa May banned them in 2015

Not in England, are you predicting violence in Scotland? It's not forecast to be particularly hot there this weekend. Confused

They certainly did run around with knives and were very violent. That's why they were seen as a huge issue. Machetes were harder to come by before the internet otherwise they would have had them too.

It wasn't 'just' flick knives, there were knuckledusters and cut throat razors, too. Not to forget that if somebody pissed off the guys at the local meat markets, there was all manner of other weaponry coming out - nobody needed to have a machete when they could bring along breakers, boners and skinners.

oh stop getting so excited 🙄

its been predicted on here every year since 2011

honestly some on MN would absolutely love the drama

what is happening the stepped up aggression and open racism from some in our society that the media are fuelling this that is what we need to be concerned about not a relatively small bunch of racist idiots creating issues that the police can handle

I think the water cannon poster was the excitable one!

RedToothBrush · 02/08/2024 11:27

Yay! Boris's water cannons which would be illegal to use!

Woot.

Takes me back.

the there is going to be repeats of 2011 and yesterday it was civil unrest across the country

maybe you have not been on MN long to know the of drama on here

the real concern is the increased everyday racism and the impact but that isn't for many as interesting or as exciting as possibly watching a riot with possible looting

ErrolTheDragon · 02/08/2024 14:29

See my post upthread - that Bloody Stupid Johnson debacle wasn't till 2014

I’ve teen here for ages and whilst there have often been posts predicting unrest which haven’t happened I do think it’s a tinder box situation atm

Thanks @ErrolTheDragon thought as much

The bank holiday weekend in England is end of August. There might be torrential rain by then and people only riot when it's hot.

lollipoprainbow · 01/08/2024 10:25

People are rightly pissed off about two tier policing. Pussy footing round the hare hills rioters, standing by while a bus was torched and talking nicely nicely to the romas and running away compared to bashing innocent bystanders over the head with batons last night in Downing Street, and arresting elderly people.

Funny how the riot shields and batons come out for some and not others.

100% correct

So why was I watching a live yesterday of rioters in the pouring rain?

An Asian man was dragged out of his car and it was set on fire. Still think their getting it under control?

I’m not watching anything but listening to the radio, it sounds like the gov could lose control

Iamonsocialmediatoomuch · 03/08/2024 22:35

And Kier Starmer is going on holiday, hmm not the best timing.

Rainbowsponge · 03/08/2024 22:40

He’ll have to cancel the holiday - going away now would be a terrible look. This may carry on for a number of nights yet.

Appalonia · 04/08/2024 00:08

If Starmer goes on holiday it will be a much worse dereliction of duty than Rishi Sunak leaving the D Day event early. He will be seen as so weak!

Dandeliontea123 · 04/08/2024 00:14

What the hell? Where was this?
