Repeat of 2011 Riots looming?

Awful news from Southport, my heart goes out to all involved and the communities. Shocking.

Can’t help but think after watching BBC News this evening that with Downing Street Riots, Manchester and now Hartlepool, that we’re now heading towards a repeat of the 2011 riots?

It's the summer, people are overheated and short tempered.

Yes. It sounds cynical but a bit of hot weather is a contributory factor, I think. It's easier to play hell on a warm evening in August than a damn cold one in January. I'll read on and see how many others might have agreed with you on this.

upinaballoon · 01/08/2024 11:25

A relative once said that some people just enjoy a fight. She'd have been lambasted for saying it in public, no doubt. But it does look as if there are those who use any excuse to enjoy themselves fighting, and they galvanise others who do have reasons for thinking they're being hard done by in some way. I'm in my 70s. It would be interesting to go back through my life and count up how many headlines there've been about riots. Toxteth? Bristol? Where else? Sidney Street? Mmm, better look that one up !

The Southend incident this week is a separate thing.

Ever since lockdown we've had an issue here with large groups of young people from London arranging occasional mass gatherings/beach parties via social media.

This week was probably the worst I've seen - I was driving along the seafront when they all started arriving off the train and it was clear to me then that there would be trouble due to the anti social behaviour I witnessed from the car.

The police issued a dispersal order earlier in the day as they knew it was going to happen but were caught up in a separate incident on the other side of town and it seems were a bit slow to respond to the knife fight that occurred on the seafront. It was the security guards for the local amusement park trying to contain the situation that you can see in the videos that have been posted.

This will unfortunately happen again and again ( and used to happen in the 50's and 60's with the Mods and Rockers - it's a seaside thing ) It's up to the transport police and the local police and City Council to make sure these events don't became as dangerous as this last one did.

There is alot of anger here about it as we've put up with it for the past few years and each time the police and local politicians say they will stop it happening again. Our two mew MPs have vowed to deal with the problem but how I don't know. The last MP campaigned for knife arches at the stations but these are useless when these gangs of kids just jump the barriers at the station because they haven't even bought tickets.

There is a rumour that another event is planned for Saturday and it's really worrying when I have an 18 year old son who wants to go to his friend's birthday drinks at the pub that night.

Thanks for explaining. How shameful that this has had no wider press attention or any action.

The one in Leeds? There was loads of discussion about it here at the time

It doesn’t fit with the rewriting of history. Basically unless they personally witnessed it or participated it doesn’t exist.

A relative once said that some people just enjoy a fight

@upinaballoon they weren’t wrong. I was out with a group of friends and one of their friends piped up with ‘they really shouldn’t annoy me at work, some poor twat ends up getting it on a Friday night’. Classy lady she was…

EDL rioters - thick and racist
Harehills rioters - poor and deprived

What’s your point here? That you somehow feel aggrieved at the representations of these groups? Are they factually incorrect in some way?

Do you think, on average, the rioters last night are from middle class or privileged backgrounds?

@AngelsWithSilverWings I don't think the mods and rockers ran around with knives and machetes or am I wrong ??

It's the summer, people are overheated and short tempered.

It's nice weather in the northwest of England, but not really all that hot.
I suppose the thugs wouldn't have been so eager to turn up if it had been pissing down but that really is no excuse whatever.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 01/08/2024 12:07

@lollipoprainbow not machetes but the mods carried flick knives. There's been a few old newspaper articles shared on local social media showing that these problems are far from a new thing and they are quite interesting. I'm not by any means trying to play it down. It's bloody awful that these teenagers feel the need to carry machetes and join gangs. And it's not just kids travelling from London , we have our own local county lines problems too unfortunately.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 01/08/2024 12:13

@PandoraSox I think the only reason the Southend incident has made the national news this time and not before is because it's been lumped in with the Southport incident and the EDL riots.

Far right posters on social media have jumped on the fact that it was mainly young black teenagers from London causing the trouble in Southend and have been sharing clips on social media to add weight to their anti immigration rhetoric.

They ran around with flick knives, coshes, and motorcycle chains. Stabbings were commonplace at Margate, Bournmouth etc.

So you are saying that wasn't the case and the media made it up about who it was ??

It's the summer, people are overheated and short tempered.

And the schools universities etc are closed for the summer. We've already had an increase in petty crime and vandalism in our town. It happens every year at this time.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 01/08/2024 13:27

@lollipoprainbow no I'm just stating facts. The trouble makers in Southend were predominantly black teenagers on a day trip from London and the far right are jumping on that fact and sharing videos of the knife fights to add weight to their anti immigration rhetoric in the wake of the Southport attack.

@lollipoprainbow I have no idea if they are immigrants or not and neither do you. Their status as either uk citizens ( which I imagine most of them are ) or immigrants is irrelevant to me - the problem is them running around with machetes and causing trouble in my town.

The EDL posting anti immigration rhetoric is not going to solve the very serious issue of knife crime. As I said in a previous post - we have our own county lines problem in Southend and I know both white working class and middle class kids that have been caught up in knife and drug culture here.

I’m concerned about anyone tearing around with machetes. Whether they are immigrants or not is completely irrelevant. This kind of comment stokes up the very rhetoric and awful behaviour we have seen this week.

BeerForMyHorses · 01/08/2024 14:34

I think we will see riots all over the place now. There seems to be a real bubbling tension, it's frightening

Meadowfinch · 01/08/2024 14:42

They say the weather is the best policeman, ie people don't go out and riot when it's cold, wet, blowy, frosty etc.

But fine, hot, humid weekends, when people have been drinking and are out on the streets.....that's when trouble flares. All it needs is a match !

Are you picking that up from SM?

You may be right but I’m not on X

In other news a 16 year old lad has drowned in Windermere while on a school trip. 😭😭😭They think he was trying to help two other people. His dad paid tribute to him. He should have been safe on a school trip. We don't see anyone kicking off about that though do we.

I looked his dad up on Facebook. He is raising money for a well in Uganda in memory of his son. Let's help him reach his target.

They need to get the army in get the water cannons on them. That's what they did in the London riots.

They certainly did run around with knives and were very violent. That's why they were seen as a huge issue. Machetes were harder to come by before the internet otherwise they would have had them too.

No they didn’t. The U.K. doesn’t have any water cannon and the army are not deployed against civilians in GB (NI is a different matter).

Honestly, the rubbish people make up.
