Awful news from Southport, my heart goes out to all involved and the communities. Shocking.

Can’t help but think after watching BBC News this evening that with Downing Street Riots, Manchester and now Hartlepool, that we’re now heading towards a repeat of the 2011 riots?

If Starmer goes on holiday it will be a much worse dereliction of duty than Rishi Sunak leaving the D Day event early. He will be seen as so weak!

Of course he is not going to go on holiday. He is not Johnson.

That would be a great way to pour petrol on the fire.

Ridiculous.... Most people are going about their business and leisure normally.
I happened to be in Southport yesterday, they seemed to be there - apart from pausing respectfully and sadly by the flowers outside The Atkinson.

Shame on anyone rioting or in any way trying to stoke up tension. Which seems to be what quite a few posts appear to be doing.

I spent hours watching the CCTV for the 2011 riots
What struck me at the time is how quickly people got carried away and the absolute joy on their faces as they did it
They were having a great time.
Do I think it will reach those levels this time ? No but I do think there will be more disorder in fact I am absolutely preparing to dust off the old uniform and be sent back to front line duties

An Asian man was dragged out of his car and it was set on fire.

What the hell? Where was this?

Hull. Not sure the car was set on fire but certainly badly damaged and the owner was dragged out and racially abused. Terrible.

In 2011 thousands were arrested and charged , I think pretty swiftly, and heavily sentenced, and it was basically violence against property. The numbers being arrested so far this time seem tiny, yet I've seen reports of some horrifying violent assaults on people by groups of men. And it's enraging that the media is constantly calling this lot 'protestors' (because it's planned and publicised?). So it doesn't feel like the policing response is as effective this time ?

Rioting is a criminal offence in itself, as is arson, as is violent disorder

The arrests generally happen after the event, once suspect are identified from video footage. This is what happened in 2011 and what will be happening over the coming days and weeks. There will be a lot of hooligans nursing a hangover and dreading a knock on the door over the next few days.

dottiehens · 04/08/2024 09:19

As far as I remembered the riots in 2011 were when politicians were already on holidays. Of course KS will not go now.

Thank you Cormorant. God, that poor man. Absolutely horrendous.

aramox1 · 04/08/2024 09:59

Horrendous. What can we do , especially from outside the affected areas?

Keep calm and carry on. Seriously.

I'm not sure there's much anyone can 'do' other than on social media, don't let the agitators control the narrative.

There should be a lot more focus on prevention. With the amount of open source and pre-activity intel, we should be looking at curfews and travel banning people planning to get involved. I also think the Police need to show a lot more teeth and very quickly. It’s all very well discussing 24 hour courts, but that’s after the event. And don’t even start me on the supposed prison spaces being made available - when we are going to be letting prisoners out next month due to overcrowding and the system being at capacity!

Adviceneeeeded · 04/08/2024 10:49

I watched a video from what I thinknwas manchester last night.

2 young girls stuck out to me. Mainly because most of the rioters where white men. They stuck out like a sore thumb.

I don't think they even knew what they where doing. But the absolute glee on their face when they whacked a police officer, ran into Sainsbury's and threw products all over the pavement. They where following a group of men giggling and running around like chickens.

They will be easily identified, and hopefully spoken to by the police! Stop then doing it again.

Is this really what we are teaching our kids?

People chanting, "save our kids" and "take back england" whilst simultaneously destroying everything around them and encouraging kids and teens to join in, is moronic at best! An absolute oxymoron.

And then I couldn't get over how many people there really are who are part of and or support the EDL. What a sorry state of affairs

This is actually a huge reason we didn't move up north when we had the chance.

We would likely have our windows blown through.
