Put the country before himself - yes, finally, but he’s done it.

Please God let my country be ok.

It really is stressful being American right now. Biden has been such a good President and it seems so unfair that he had to step down but age comes for all of us. If Trump wins then the complaint that Biden was too old will be just bullshit. I hope he gets a rapturous hero’s welcome at the convention. He’s done the right thing.

Sorry I’m not making much sense right now (and I’m only 57!) but this has made me emotional.

Understandable but I wouldn't make age the ultimate decider going forward. There are 80 yr old celebs running around stages, think Mick Jagger. The man did well. His own personal physical ailments eventually got the better of him.

Trump's so utterly arrogant and ghastly - It's a shame Biden appeared to have severe cognitive decline, God help us ALL if Trump gets in again.

The bloody BBC news alert which tells me about every unimportant thing in the world.... failed to tell me about this!

Lentilweaver · 21/07/2024 19:31

I don't think America will vote for a mixed race woman.

I desperately hope that there's a massive surge of support for Kamala Harris now. It could really become a campaign filled with passion now, and really flip the numbers.

She can likely take Trump apart in a debate; they won't want to engage with a younger, smarter, more progressive candidate, with a longer political history than Trump.

a goldfish could take trump apart in a debate, he has SHIT for brains!

Livelovebehappy · 21/07/2024 19:32

Thank the Lord, but if people think that the Democrats stand a chance of getting into power on the back of this, then they’re very much mistaken. Harris is very unpopular, and the other names thrown into ring, most people have never heard of, so it’s highly unlikely by Biden chucking in the towel, that it’s going to give the Democrats a foot in the door. Too little, too late i’m afraid.

StripedPiggy · 21/07/2024 19:32

The inevitable, and entirely correct decision. However painful this must be for him, he is evidently too old to embark on four more years as President.

Joe Biden is one of the good guys. He was an outstanding VP and he has done a good job as President. He can be very proud of his record, and I hope he enjoys his retirement.

As for who replaces him as the Democrat candidate, I don’t think there will be a stampede to throw their names in the hat. If I were a potential candidate, I would much prefer to wait 4 years to run against whoever is the next Republican nominee than volunteer to be eaten alive by Trump this year. I think Harris will get the gig by default.

Emmanuelll · 21/07/2024 19:33

Trump is a mumbling fool and his previous administration have been open about how thick he was last time he was trying to run the country.

The MAGA movement are and always will be as unhinged as he is but I think we should give swing voter Americans more credit, don't you?

Sloejelly · 21/07/2024 19:33

MrsPerfectlyFine · 21/07/2024 19:22

Kamala Harris has a big job….just seen she’s the nominee

She isn’t the nominee. Biden endorsed her but she still has to be voted for at the democratic conference before she becomes nominee.

justasking111 · 21/07/2024 19:33

But it doesn't just affect the presidency. Every democrat governor, senator must have quietly exhaled in relief that the political paralysis has ended.

Crosc · 21/07/2024 19:34

Aussieland · 21/07/2024 19:30

So is trump by anyone with a brain

We should refrain from this sort of rhetoric. Brain dead is dehumanising. Jo Cox’s death and Trump’s assassination serve as warning when you other those with opposing views. MAGA supporters are disenfranchised- they have concerns which need to be heard

lolly792 · 21/07/2024 19:05

Ah, Sleepy Joe needed to go! Wishing him well - I'm sure he could do with a rest!

Referring to him using Trump’s lazy and childish nickname isn’t particularly well-wishing though!

dapsnotplimsolls · 21/07/2024 19:34

How bad would it look if she isn't endorsed though? It's all about the VP pick now.

Maybe.

But there are plenty of people who have been turned off by both candidates up until now.

It's only July and many more weeks and days still to throw up plenty of surprises

AlienBlues · 21/07/2024 19:34

Will gorgeous George throw his hat in the ring?

listsandbudgets · 21/07/2024 19:35

It's sad but I dont think he could have carried on. He's made the right decision but I wish he'd made it weeks ago when there MIGHT have been a chance of defeating Trump - can only hope for a miracle now but looks like we'll be Trumping back to the circus Sad

I hope Biden is finally able to enjoy a rest

FourToTheMFingFloor · 21/07/2024 19:35

Well yes of course @BlackShuck3 🤣 but he's become so forceful that in the last debate he lied in every single answer he gave, and went unchallenged. He's unfortunately a very powerful force now, so while I don't debate she can take him apart, the question is will she get enough airtime too, and will the public see it that way.

But a lot of Americans haven't forgotten all the things that Trump has done. Including, refusing to accept the election result last time.

When he ran against Hilary Clinton, he was an unknown. People voted for him because they didn't want Hilary. Now, a lot of Americans don't want another 4 years of Trump.

White male famous actor as VP? I wouldn't be surprised.

EsmaCannonball · 21/07/2024 19:36

Ok, now they need to do the world a favour and pick a candidate who at least stands a chance against Trump. Kamala Harris has only polled better than Biden recently because he's looked so weak. The perception of her is that she is ineffective, a lightweight and that she gives speeches like she's Janice from Friends.

The arguments that I have seen in favour of Harris lately are that she's popular among Gen Z because of kooky memes and videos, that they had better go with her because she is the default candidate and gets all Biden's campaign money, and that it would be wrong for any other Democrat to stand against someone who would be the the first WOC president. These are all lazy, wrong-headed ideas. Protocol, identity politics and winning TikTok do not matter. All that matters is whether or not she can beat Trump and that seems unlikely. They need to find someone presidential.

Mommybunny · 21/07/2024 19:36

Americano75 · 21/07/2024 19:28

@Mommybunny what do you think Harris's chances would be if she does run?

I really don’t know! Personally I’m quite excited by it. I was excited by her original run for President in 2020 - even though it didn’t pick up steam then I don’t see why that’s a problem when Biden himself had run at least twice before then and never gotten far in the primaries before being the inevitable nominee in 2020 and the winner.

I think the events of the past couple of weeks have made people forget just how hated Trump is in the US. I’m hoping Democrats and independents rally around Harris, or whomever the nominee is, and get rid of Trump forever. She can prosecute the case against him much better than Biden can, and I’m praying that’s enough. But if nothing else she may stop the bleeding in the congressional races.

Yeah, I think most in the party will recognise that a unified conference will do much more than a late throwing of hats in the ring.
