Put the country before himself - yes, finally, but he’s done it.

Please God let my country be ok.

I was talking more about campaigning than acting upon. She’ll certainly be more willing to discuss abortion on the campaign trail than Biden ever was.

She will discuss it then do nothing. Then when she loses people like posters here will call American women stupid. For not being stupid.

On lancing the boil and waiting for 2028, I think people really don't appreciate the gravity of the situation. Whilst constitutional change is unlikely there are a whole raft of other options for Trump and his cronies to ensure there is never again a proper free election in the US - think for example gerrymandering to the extreme or restricting voting rights for certain groups.

And even if he does relinquish control in 2024 what then? How on Earth do you pick up the pieces of a 'democracy' that's been run roughshod over, where minorities are locked in internment camps and women are dying in droves because they can't access reproductive health care.

With Biden on the ticket there was a real risk that both the House and the Senate would be red and that Trump/JD would be entirely unchained. Even if Harris loses she might galvanise enough that Trump doesn't win every branch of Govt.

This is ridiculous. You think so little of the American people.

What is your issue? I haven't said anywhere I think little of American people, and frankly that's entirely untrue. I think a great deal of many American people. I don't think a lot however of racist misogynists..... but that's not restricted to the US.

DownNative · 23/07/2024 14:29

Igotjelly · 23/07/2024 13:32

It almost doesn't matter. Trump isn't just one man, he's representative of an entire ideology.

Correct and, since Trumpism has gone mainstream, that's why it's better to focus on a strategic plan rather than a purely tactical one.

You write as if the entire country is filled with stupid people who just can’t understand things about their own country the way you do and would allow the outlandish things you describe.

You're being ridiculous and taking offence over absolutely nothing. I think neither of those things. I think the majority of Americans are intelligent, thoughtful and well informed. I also think that there is a subset of America that is deeply racist and misogynistic and holds really problematic views. The swing towards authoritarianism and far right ideology is happening across the World, I certainly don't think its restricted to America. I also don't necessarily think that holding those views means people are idiots and/or don't understand what's happening. I think its indicative of a population who feel let down by the establishment and whom individuals such as Trump (or for argument sakes Farage, Le Pen, Orban etc.) take advantage of.

DowntownFoxyBrown · 23/07/2024 15:21

It’s the chicken little mentality crossed with “I don’t think people appreciate the gravity.”

It’s annoying.

One of the things that I find disturbing is the prosecution and conviction of a presidential candidate over:

By a state that routinely declines to prosecute violent crimes. A state where policemen have been murdered in the streets by people in the country illegally.

No one in the big D party cared that Bill Clinton raped and abused several women and paid some of them off. So it is all obviously just a political tool.

Is anyone safer because of a paperwork conviction?

Dishonesty offences for people in legal and/or political life matter. Very much.

They do! Absolutely. I would love options where honorable people are involved.

The justice system being used to attempt to get some off the ballot is criminal and so much worse than a poorly recorded bush money payment. That is the major threat to democracy here. Not one asshat with a big mouth running for office.

Exactly the reply I expected. Unable to answer. Unwilling to treat others with respect.

And yet, you've posted such intelligent and respectful and lengthy replies on the history of abortion rights and the Dobbs decision. Oh, and the crime stats?

I'm revelling in your respect. It's quite winning. I think I might join you in MAGA world now.

So would I, but sadly it's not always easy to find them when it comes to politics

I don't think Stormy has a bush?

You're leaving out the second part on the falsifying business records lark. For the purposes of influencing an election.

Re Biden on abortion. Over his 50 year career, he's certainly not been perfect. But are you actually implying he's worse than Trump? Straight answer, please.

How dare you put words in my mouth! Not liking the US and its greed based, imperialist approach because it usually results in thousands upon thousands of dead, brown people, does not mean I favour any other particular country. You might think black and brown lives are cheap, but I don’t. It’s high time the imperialist USA empire was kicked off its perch and I, for one, cannot wait.

Please, hold your breath until that happens. 😆🙄

"It’s high time the imperialist USA empire was kicked off its perch and I, for one, cannot wait."

And which country exactly would you prefer to replace the US on the "perch", because if the US is not the dominant global power then by default another country will be.

I couldn’t care less. The demise of an imperialist state, like the war hungry and greedy USA, is the first priority. The fact it’s bringing about its own demise by picking one crappy leader over another is It’s own fault.

It would be replaced by an even more war hungry imperialist state like China or Russia. At least the US believes in freedom, democracy and rights. It’s not perfect but it’s a damned sight better than the alternatives.

I think it would be fair to say that the above hurt Hilary's campaign though and was one reason Trump ended up in the White House in the first place.

Well, I will have to make that decision. I am going to run out of a candidate to vote for soon. As for his family, if I truly respected any of them, I'd be more inclined to listen to them.
For me, it's another election, this time, of the "least of all weevils".

What I wouldn't give for a Presidential election where I cannot decide who to vote for because they all would be an asset to the country. Alas, probably not going to happen in my lifetime.

Have a look at two of the independents. Jill Stein and Cornell West.
