Put the country before himself - yes, finally, but he’s done it.

Please God let my country be ok.

Unless it is true that Michelle Obama will stand 😮

Bobbybobbins · 21/07/2024 19:09

Poor Joe- definitely the right decision all round.

garlicandsapphires · 21/07/2024 19:09

Michelle O will never stand. She’s said so repeatedly

But Nigel Farage changed HIS mind!

Please Michelle - the world needs you.

Startingagainandagain · 21/07/2024 19:12

Finally!

But his reluctance to do this early on has been a gift to Trump.

Another example of a politician who put his own interests and ego first rather than the good of his country.

A huge task for whoever will replace him as candidate with little time left to campaign.

Michelle Obama could win it. Hilary Clinton couldn't.

Probably will be someone less well known which again will be in Trump's advantage.

No I don't believe that @DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace
Up until a few weeks ago polls were showing he was the only one to beat Trump.
It is very late in the day to throw in the towel, no matter what the pressure on you from your so called colleagues.
The democrats do not have long to come up with another candidate who will have the popularity or support to beat Trump now.

I'm not sure - I don't think he'd have gone if they thought he could win.
He's gone because they think he can't win, and have convinced him to step down. Not because he's realised he's too old.

Crosc · 21/07/2024 19:14

He should have bowed out gracefully. Being pushed out is a terrible look. Who has been ruining the country for the past 4 years??

I am trying to see the similarities between Farage and Michelle Obama…

…no, it’s just not coming to me.

Summernightsinthe21stcentury · 21/07/2024 19:15

@DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace
Yes I agree that the polls now look like he couldn't defeat Trump after this concerted effort to get him removed from the ticket.
But this does not leave the democrats in a good place at all.

noctiscaelum · 21/07/2024 19:15

I find it sad actually. There are many voters who supports Biden, but money talks clearly.

Sorry but I really can't see America having a female president in the next 30+ years.

Emmanuelll · 21/07/2024 19:16

Thank goodness. The democrats need to do all they can to avoid another 4 years of Trump.

Crosc · 21/07/2024 19:17

Kamala endorsed by Biden

Trump win inevitable now

headstone · 21/07/2024 19:17

Bye bye Genocide Joe.

januaryjan · 21/07/2024 19:17

Kamala Harris has been endorsed to run against Trump

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 21/07/2024 19:17

Finally!!

Summernightsinthe21stcentury · 21/07/2024 19:17

I am sad too. I think he did a good job in this first term, obviously he is an old man, though.
You have to question how America chose 2 old such old men to run! Trump is no better, mumbling and making words up. Never mind the fact he is really odious.

Not true.

Kamala Harris was polling better against Trump.

anonhop · 21/07/2024 19:02

Yes, in the Times.

Right thing to do. He clearly was struggling + I think at age 82, signing up to do anything for 4 years is a big ask (nobody is guaranteed tomorrow, but it is riskier with age!) especially something as crucial as leader of the free world in such turbulent global times

I hope he has a good retirement, maybe his health will improve when the pressure is off. That pressure can't be good for someone of his age.

Oh I agree. I don't think he could win and I don't think his replacement will win. I think the desire to get rid of him was an attempt to limit the damage in the Senate and House of Representatives.

Who knows who will volunteer to replace him, when they're almost guaranteed to lose. Anyone decent might want to wait until 2028 (like how no Tory was keen to replace Sunak and lose the general election).
Kamala Harris I guess - she's probably less likely to run in 2028, and she's already tied to this election.

I'm not ageist, I'm in my 70s myself, but I think there needs to be an age limit. Not sure what it should be though.

Summernightsinthe21stcentury · 21/07/2024 19:21

Yes i think you are right, it is now a poisoned chalice @DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace
Nobody who thinks they have a political career ahead of them will want to lose to Trump.

LizzieBennett73 · 21/07/2024 19:21

I felt horribly sorry for him, watching his very public decline. Having worked in elderly care, it seemed that he was being very taken advantage of by everyone around him, including his family. I'm sure they wanted him to fulfil another term to save Hunter.

I hope he now gets to live out his twilight years in peace and quiet - and dignity.

FourToTheMFingFloor · 21/07/2024 19:22

I desperately hope that there's a massive surge of support for Kamala Harris now. It could really become a campaign filled with passion now, and really flip the numbers.

She can likely take Trump apart in a debate; they won't want to engage with a younger, smarter, more progressive candidate, with a longer political history than Trump.

Summernightsinthe21stcentury · 21/07/2024 19:22

@Iwasafool
I agree, and I don't know what age the limit should be, but there should be one, certainly. Just to avoid this sort of thing in the future!
