Put the country before himself - yes, finally, but he’s done it.

Please God let my country be ok.

Do you mean Trump or Clinton?

🤣🤣🤣

Summernightsinthe21stcentury · 22/07/2024 20:05

I come from the standpoint that in a contest where it is any democrat v Trump, I'd prefer any democrat. And to avoid a Trump victory, the voters need to get behind the democrat. Otherwise we know the result.
I also thought she spoke well today

Or several of the Kennedys - but try saying THAT in Massachusetts!! Confused

I don't think Biden is senile, and I don't think he has been selfish waiting so long to drop out. Someone upthread said he would be fine doing the day to day job but all the polish for the speeches and tv appearances have been what has let him down.

I listened to the first part of her speech, and I thought Kamala did a nice job.

I'd love to know what any US mumsnetters thought about her.

I certainly think that any right minded American who does not want a Trump government should make sure they get out and vote for Kamala or whichever candidate they put forward.

4 more years of Trump would be a disaster.

4 more years of Trump would be a disaster.

I don’t think there’s any doubt about that, but voting for one party simply because one doesn’t like the others’ choice of candidate is also disastrous. Both sides are an absolute shit show - is this really the best America has to offer ?

It’s the people that need persuasion that they should be courting though. Not the ones that always vote for democrats no matter who is running. Most (all?) Dems were happy for Biden to run as long as they thought he could beat Trump. They only turned on him when it became risky.

I believe JFK’s nephew is standing as an independent. His past association with Covid vaccine conspiracy theorists probably won’t help him.

Or mention the name Kennedy and Chappaquiddick in the same sentence.

Yes it is all about the swing states. It will certainly be interesting, and Biden could have pulled it off, based on polling but KH is not doing much worse, and this change so late might work for them.

His beliefs and feelings about vaccines, though not mine, would not compromise how he ran the country.

I will be reading more of his platform.

Summernightsinthe21stcentury · 22/07/2024 20:18

JD Vance-

D Vance says that Kamala Harris is a “childless cat lady” who is “miserable” with her life because she didn’t have children, and that not having children means that she doesn’t have “a direct stake” in America. Story.

Andrea Leadsom tried this attack and it did not work....

Emmanuelll · 22/07/2024 20:19

I don't think I'd want someone who doesn't believe in science running the country.

Papyrophile · 22/07/2024 20:20

@Rosscameasdoody , Biden should not step down. This is the fag end of his term. He should see it out quietly in a ceremonial caretaker mode, attend planned events and ignore requests for off the cuff ripostes while Harris and any other contenders discuss the big issues for the future.

Exactly. Should another pandemic rear its’ head, I’d want someone who put the people first, not someone prone to conspiracy theory.

Emmanuelll · 22/07/2024 20:22

Surely Melania is just waiting for the opportunity to inherit his money just like any other gold digger?

She probably knows that if she left him it would result in a vindictive campaign against her.

Biden being Biden won’t do that. Which is precisely why he should step down now before he damages the party any further.

Neither will the issue that he's thrashing around, desperately trying to find a party which will have him, but as a Kennedy his attempts were to be expected

Sooner or later one can be relied on to crawl out of the woodwork and need to be swatted, and Robert's just the latest

finally a right decision made

MaggieFS · 22/07/2024 20:52

I still don't think the US will vote for a female, and plenty sadly won't vote for a person of colour. But I'd love to know more about Harris and it will be interesting to see how this pans out. It will be good to hear more of her first hand. She has obviously accomplished a lot to get this far. Who were the other options when she was picked for VP?

I've heard it said on a podcast that there's no love lost between Biden's office and her office which plays into what pp said about her not being set up for success on immigration. I'm going to try and read up more on this.

Also not in her favour as mentioned is that she isn't from a swing state, but a savvy VP choice could negate that.

Papyrophile · 22/07/2024 20:55

@Rosscameasdoody I think that is exactly what will happen, but we shall wait and see. Biden has acknowledged he doesn't have the stamina for the FT job, but is competent to do the routine stuff, and he will see out his term and with help/advice make calls.

KH is freed from the drudge VP calls to whip up enthusiasm as the appointed nominee, or to throw the Biden administration's full heft behind another nominee. As I said above, or on another concurrent similar thread, if she's nominated at the convention, and picks a popular governor from a swing state (of which there are seven) then the Democrats are still in with a shot.

JD Vance was an inspired choice of running mate for Trump though: his backstory is perfect for MAGA. KH needs an equally brilliant counterpart, and I am not seeing one.

I don’t agree really re Vance. He brings nothing to the table the Trump doesn’t already have. MAGA voters were already going to vote for him and won’t make the difference. Had he picked someone more centre right like Haley I think the Dems would be in far more trouble because she’d bring out women and the young more traditional republican vote.

JD Vance was a VP pick based on Trump’s assumption he had already won.

I agree. Which is why he's now annoyed. He can't unselect him. Plus I doubt he likes the guy. When Trump was ensconced in the WH last time, he constantly fired people.

He's a very different man than he was 4 years ago - that seemed really obvious to me, I noticed quite a difference.

Papyrophile · 22/07/2024 21:12

Actually, I suspect JD Vance is far more acceptable to blue collar America than Trump. If Trump's elected, I think he could get two terms of office in his own right.

There was a rather aggressive Rep on the BBC yesterday who said it might be that Biden doesn’t even understand that he’s stood himself down. I was a bit open-mouthed when he said it, but the more I see of the state of Biden in the news clips, the more I can believe that might actually be true.

Biden is definitely on the way out physically.
