Put the country before himself - yes, finally, but he’s done it.

Please God let my country be ok.

It’s astounding to think this is what could happen.

There are a lot of misogynistic comments on Instagram. When Vance was selected - one post said ‘now the women will be told their place by men’ 😮

I was listening to an interview with a doctor and he was saying they're basically at the point in some states of having to leave a woman to bleed just enough, or be just riddled enough with infection that they're then legally allowed to intervene. He said it just goes against everything that doctors are trained to do.

To these men women's health and wellbeing is worth next to nothing.

There are now rumours that Biden is dead ...

This week's conspiracy theory. Last week's was that Trump somehow managed to move his head slightly to avoid the bullet he knew was coming for him...

The end of this Presidency should achieve rather more than expected then.

(I don’t believe for a second he’s dead. Social media…🙄)

On lancing the boil and waiting for 2028, I think people really don't appreciate the gravity of the situation. Whilst constitutional change is unlikely there are a whole raft of other options for Trump and his cronies to ensure there is never again a proper free election in the US - think for example gerrymandering to the extreme or restricting voting rights for certain groups.

And even if he does relinquish control in 2024 what then? How on Earth do you pick up the pieces of a 'democracy' that's been run roughshod over, where minorities are locked in internment camps and women are dying in droves because they can't access reproductive health care.

With Biden on the ticket there was a real risk that both the House and the Senate would be red and that Trump/JD would be entirely unchained. Even if Harris loses she might galvanise enough that Trump doesn't win every branch of Govt.

Ireland legalised abortion after the death of Savita Halappanavar, the USA is going the other way.

The US Constitution is arranged in such a way that a President cannot become a dictator. Indeed, US Constitutional arrangements are very difficult to change.

The best option for the Democrats is to have control of the House Of Representatives, the Senate or both by a good, healthy margin. That's a long term strategic victory.

But if they plough on with their message of preventing a Trump Presidency they will not only galvanise Trump's base, they will further polarise US politics. That's the short term tactical route Trump's team expect them to take and will have their message set up for that.

That's why the Democrats should wrong foot Trump's team by dispensing their message of stopping Trump. And focusing intense efforts on having control of Congress.

US Presidents require coalition building with Congressmen in order to pursue their legislative programme. The more Democrats there are in Congress, the more they cut options off to Trump.

Sometimes you need to take the path of least resistance which turns out to be the stronger position.

Unfortunately, I expect the Democrats to behave the same way as they have since 2016 which has been very mixed for them. They'll give Trump more of a chance as a result.

A strong United States is in the best interests of Europe. Go for the strategic plan and from 2024 onwards groom a candidate for the Presidency to be a strong, effect leader.

Preferably one who isn't old like Biden and Trump....

Please, hold your breath until that happens.

I'm sure you would much rather it be China and Russia as the main superpowers. Or Iran. 🙄

How dare you put words in my mouth! Not liking the US and its greed based, imperialist approach because it usually results in thousands upon thousands of dead, brown people, does not mean I favour any other particular country. You might think black and brown lives are cheap, but I don’t. It’s high time the imperialist USA empire was kicked off its perch and I, for one, cannot wait.

JD Vance wife ex democrat married 2014 3 children. Don't tell me she didn't use contraception.

Melania Trump one child, don't tell me she didn't use contraception. Unless she threw him out of the bedroom years ago.

I'm not American but the hypocrisy is a huge neon sign.

Trump is 78 now, 82 next time. No chance he will be in good enough health to stand then IMO.

That isn't a given at all.....seems unlikely, but it's not a given by any means.

We will have to see what happens in November.

Trump said in the recent debate that he would not support any agenda to end access to plan B or other abortion pills.

The RNC convention lacked any mention of abortion.

States like NYC passed laws affirming the right to abortion years prior to the SCOTUS decision. Why? Because it was well known that it was ripe to be overturned. To say it came out of the blue is a joke.

If the Democratic Party cared about women, they would focus on creating federal laws protecting us and our rights. Biden has an abysmal record on the topic of abortion. He voted more than once to prohibit abortion funding support for victims of rape and incest. Wanted to prohibit Federal workers from using health insurance for abortion. Long ago? Well he and the party constantly harp about their their records but lie about this. He and the party did nothing before or since to prevent what had happened.

It almost doesn't matter. Trump isn't just one man, he's representative of an entire ideology.

If they ban contraception that will annoy the men because women just won't have sex with them. So I doubt that will gain traction.

The anti abortion thing is terrifying if women cannot decide for themselves they ought to clamp their knees shut and loudly proclaim why they're doing so. If enough senators, governors, judges are outed as having been cut off by their wives, they'll think a lot harder.

I think it’s just certain types of contraception with certain mechanisms they’re going after, including the morning after pill. I heard the same interview as another poster - a doctor in the USA, saying that the new laws were interfering with treatment, and some doctors were worried they would face criminal charges when treating women who presented with stillbirth/miscarriage. Women are not going to be able to access proper healthcare at this rate, and the next step will inevitably involve women having to provide evidence they’re not pregnant before they can access certain treatments. Trump was the architect of this, and the Republican platform 2024 leaves you in no doubt as to what’s coming if he wins.

Rosscameasdoody · 23/07/2024 13:45

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/07/2024 10:49

I already knew, @Rosscameasdoody, but guess I've put this badly because suggesting Trump's wouldn't attack women's rights wasn't my intention

Rather, I'm concerned that because Roe vs Wade was overturned during a Democrat term, Trump will use this to spin it

No, sorry, I probably wasn’t clear. Not disagreeing with you at all. I do think Trump will try to spin it as a Democrat issue - I just hope American women will be informed enough to know the truth.

DowntownFoxyBrown · 23/07/2024 14:02

And yeah, American women are not stupid, thanks. We can see neither party truly cares about us. That’s why we often vote based on other topics.

I was talking more about campaigning than acting upon. She’ll certainly be more willing to discuss abortion on the campaign trail than Biden ever was.

An entire party that pretends to care then uses this as a wedge issue for five decades has done more damage to women.
