Why does everybody hate Trump?

athosporthos · 19/07/2024 09:31

First off, please don't flame me, I genuinely am not up to scratch on US affairs/politicians in general - I only do brief research for our own UK elections, and even then I generally only decide by whoever promises to help the NHS and living costs most believably!

Can someone give me some examples on why he's so hated - or on the other hand, why some people love him so much?

Yes, apart from the:

Misogyny
Racism
Mockery of the disabled
Incitement of mob violence
Blatant lies - All.The.Time.
Attempts to overthrow the election
Corrupt business practice
Tax avoidance
Adultery
General incompetence and lack of suitability for political and diplomatic life.....

Just why does everyone hate Trump?

Rapist
Possible paedophile (went with Epstein to his island several times)
liar
treason
corrupt business man
treated all his contractors and workers incredibly badly his whole career and has continued
right wing
would rather be friends with Putin, Xi etc and let them get on with taking over whatever they want to as long as it advances his mates than support moral causes

That sort of thing

Bill Clinton spent a lot of time with Epstein. His attitude towards China and Russia seems to be one of building bridges and cooperation rather than the confrontation and hostility the western political elite seem to adopt as a matter of course.
He's certainly a very flawed person, a bellend definitely. I think it's the fact that the political establishment hate him, have been caught out lying and spreading misinformation about him that makes him seem like a genuinely different candidate to the rest

I am not disputing Clinton spent time with Epstein but he is not a candidate! Knowing now what we do about him that may have changed things. But with trump that’s a tiny part of his awfulness rather than a main one!

And the “building bridges” is more about making deals that benefit him personal I rather than the country. Look at his Taiwan stance- wanting something from them (when America already gets a shit load from them just trump doesn’t seem to understand when it’s not cash in hand protection money)

And the media has failed in highlighting many of his problems to be honest and his absolute failure as a human- the corruption throughout his career and treating anyone he doesn’t see as of benefit to him as dirt. So much that comes out of his mouth is a lie that it’s hard to find truths. Politicians lie and it’s shit. But this is next level lying- like a toddler saying he didn’t steal the cookies with crumbs around his mouth

sashh · 20/07/2024 05:43

athosporthos · 19/07/2024 11:00

@sashh Oh my god! That is abhorrent. I've just read a bit more on his stance in the matter and I am sickened. He's after making it a criminal offence to get an abortion with no exceptions Shock

That's the situation in a couple of countries and a few US states. Lots had laws ready to go as soon as Roe v Wade fell.

It has cut down not just abortions but fertility treatment and a whole host of reproductive healthcare.

Ther eare now states that consider the destruction of a foetus murder. So if you are working in a fertility clinic and drop a petri dish you could face life in prison. In fact it isn't just a foetus, it applies to things like molar pregnancy.

There is a 12 year old rape victim now attempting to bring up a child.

Inspireme2 · 20/07/2024 05:47

Who walks around that shade of Orange.
How is a business man a president.
I think he's a joke
Today's so sad these people suck others to get then into "power".

Aside from everything already mentioned, I also think Americans (not all obviously!) are crazy!!

Did anyone see in his speech yesterday lots of people in the crowd had plasters on their ears?! Just would never happen here!

Also Hulk Hogan there ripping his TShirt off 🤪

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Why do people like Trump?

Because despite reading and watching a lot, I really don't understand. And millions of people do love him

TheHuntSyndicate · 19/07/2024 10:26

Op, Mumsnet is very left wing so you are only going to read negative things about Trump.

Rather than blindly following left wing posters opinions, form your own and look at other sites where people support Trump and read what they have to say about him and why they support him as millions do.

Then you can form your own opinion.

Yes nobody has mentioned how he helped Kevin in Home Alone 2.
These left wing mumsnetters are just blind to Trump's caring nature.

beguilingeyes · 20/07/2024 08:19

He egged his supporters on to murder his Vice President (Mike Pence) because he refused to block the election result! They built a scaffold in the Capitol grounds!
But...but... but... Bill Clinton (rolls eyes).

mitogoshi · 20/07/2024 08:23

Misogyny, racism, changing his opinion to get popularity, encouraging insurgency. He's actually a bit gullible in my opinion because he just wants to be popular and have power so listens to people who say I can make this happen if you say this or that incendiary remark!

I disliked him but refusing to criticise those who stormed the capital was the final straw

mitogoshi · 20/07/2024 08:24

Ps he once was a democrat when he thought he could get voted for!

Kitkat1523 · 20/07/2024 09:30

My Mum 88 …..Yorkshire born and bred….absolutely loves him….I found her on YouTube yesterday watching him do his speeches

Many of us do. Don't make the mistake of assuming a firm opinion hasn't been made following objective research.

And mumsnet isn't left wing.

I'm, broadly speaking, a leftish kind of person but I think the current most vocal parts of the left can be supremely annoying, intolerant and liable to label everyone a bigot or fascist for even questioning them, so Trump supporters feel like they are giving a much-deserved two fingers up to those kind of people and their policies.

The left also has a habit of airily waving away true concerns about crime, immigration, gender-identity, etc., and therefore cedes some of the most pressing issues to the craziest voices on the right.

Taytocrisps · 20/07/2024 13:46

So many reasons :-

  • He has boasted about sexually abusing women.
  • He's a racist and stokes up hate against immigrants.
  • He makes promises he can't keep - making America great again, creating jobs for Americans etc.
  • He's a total hypocrite. He has spoken about how his life was spared, "by the grace of Almighty God", but he doesn't appear to practice religion in his daily life.
  • The position of POTUS requires intelligence, tact and diplomacy. He has demonstrated (time and time again) that he lacks all of these qualities.
Callalllaaammma · 20/07/2024 14:07

I personally don't like Trump, all the bluster and self-aggrandisement but he is heading for the centre of American Politics now. I just listed these policies as to why he has grown in support and don't believe if he came to power it would be so disasterous for the West.

Abortion -he has stated will be left up to the states to decide policy. He said he will not be banning the morning after pill.

Illegal immegration- this has spiralled under Biden to 600,000 last year and this is an absolutely unprecedented number. It is especiallly unpopular with Black and Hispanic votors as they are more often in competition for jobs, health care and education and has even won Trump a lot of new potential voters from these communities. His promise to close the borders again is very popular.

Net -0. Trump believes that America does not want this because the wind alternatives are too expensive and unreliable.
America is self sufficient through fracking and becoming a net exporter of oil.

On shoring - manufacturing is being brought back to America and Mexico from China and also Trump wants to put tarriffs on Chinese goods giving a huge boost to working class jobs across America. IFor the first time that a Union leader spoke at a Republican convention. Vance the vice president grew up in poverty in Appalatia and wants to introduce Government support, that is State intervention of key industries. In fact his vision almost sounds like an earlier version of the Labour Party with a focus on working class.

Big tech- The large companies in Silicon Valley largely fund the Democrats and the Trump administration wants to break them up, believes they disrupt and destroy working class jobs and are too dominant.

You can see that this message must be very appealing to non-university educated workers in the US who have, like industrial Britain suffered decline due to Global trade. America is onshoring is shifting the power balance from Tech to Manufacture.

DeadbeatYoda · 20/07/2024 14:41

Because he behaves like a spoilt, boastful child. He tell pathetic lies about being the best at everything. Because he is a disgusting misogynist, because he is one big walking red flag of a man.

ginasevern · 20/07/2024 16:15

athosporthos · 19/07/2024 14:51

@ginasevern I just don't follow US politics at all. Of course I've heard about Trump, I know he was president and know he's running now, I know he's unpopular, I've seen bits and pieces on the TV and things have popped up on my news apps. I'm not absolutely oblivious. But I was asking for some real details to explain the hatred against him, which I've never looked into because it doesn't concern or usually interest me. The recent assassination attempt had piqued my curiosity. I had no idea about lots of these comments!

I think it's ok to not know everything (and to ask questions) about a may or may not be leader of another country.

It's not about following US politics though is it? That's like saying you didn't study world war 2 and therefore haven't heard of the holocaust. This isn't about politics in Fiji or Outer Mongolia, this is a world superpower that affects us directly (rightly or wrongly depending on your views). What if Trump disengaged with Nato? He's been threatening to do so and that's really, really bad for Europe. I'm not suggesting you study US politics in the finest detail, such as vote counting, but if you think the wider issues (such as the next President) is irrelevant to your world you need broaden your current affairs interests.

Could you give some examples? I'm a fairly avid consumer of news and have come across very little of this, but would be interested in seeing what's out there.

Abhannmor · 20/07/2024 16:49

SilenceInside · 19/07/2024 15:32

To be clear @athosporthos I don't hate Trump. There are very few people I actually hate in this world. However, I find him deeply flawed, deeply unpleasant, deeply harmful and so on and so on. He is not someone I admire, look up to, I don't rate his business acumen, his intelligence or his understanding. I think he's entirely self-focussed and happy to use any leverage he can to gain power, money and influence. I think he doesn't see anyone other than men like him as worthwhile.

I think his populism stems from the fact that he says and does what other people wish they could say and do without consequence.

You've nailed it there. He appeals to people's darker side , their most vicious and selfish instincts. Thus making it seem normal to give expression to such feelings - even to celebrate them.

Could any politician in Europe have survived his grotesque mockery of the disabled man? Yet we can't be too smug - Farage and Johnson have gone to worship at his feet.

I mean, this is all garbage.

I've just listened to this discussion between Sam Harris and Anne Applebaum on the current threat to democracy. It largely deals with Trump and Applebaum really articulates why he is so concerning.
