Why does everybody hate Trump?

First off, please don't flame me, I genuinely am not up to scratch on US affairs/politicians in general - I only do brief research for our own UK elections, and even then I generally only decide by whoever promises to help the NHS and living costs most believably!

Can someone give me some examples on why he's so hated - or on the other hand, why some people love him so much?

Where shall we start.......

I first read of his bullying and unpleasant nature way before he entered politics. When he was throwing his weight around when building his Scottish golf course.

And he went downhill from there - as detailed by many posters on here.

As well as his own criminal and character failings I think many worry about his friends and associates.

The way in which the religious right has risen.
The way in which 'alternative' truths are acceptable.
The way that minorities have been scapegoated. (Didn't our Grandparents see this in the 30s in Europe?)
The feathering of their own nests. Keir Starmer talked about a return to the idea of politicians serving - not sure that this would be the case in a second Trump Presidency.
Women's rights.
The acceptance of political violence - until someone takes a pop at him.
His foreign policy. Will Ukraine be thrown under the bus if he gets in?
His relationship with Putin? What hold does Putin have over Trump?

Enough yet?

I'm hoping that the Democrat party can produce an electable candidate, Joe Biden seems a decent chap but doesn't seem energetic enough to be a creditable candidate.

Op, Mumsnet is very left wing so you are only going to read negative things about Trump.

Rather than blindly following left wing posters opinions, form your own and look at other sites where people support Trump and read what they have to say about him and why they support him as millions do.

Then you can form your own opinion.

Because he lies and lies and lies and lies and lies and lies and lies.

Thelnebriati · 19/07/2024 10:35

Criticism isn't hate.
Its acceptable to criticise a politician that mocks disabled people, or makes sexist comments.

His getting rid of Roe v Wade.

I saw a YouTube short of a woman, she was pregnant as a result of fertility treatment and obviously her and her husband really wanted the baby.

When it was discovered the pregnancy wasn't viable she could not get an abortion until her life was in danger.

By the time she was able to get an abortion she had sepsis and her fertility was completely destroyed.

Domoda · 19/07/2024 10:37

Because he stirs up hatred and intolerance, and is a danger to world peace

VolvoFan · 19/07/2024 10:38

Because he's every -ist and -obe imaginable by the Left and nothing ever sticks to him. He's even seemingly unkillable. They'll keep trying, though.

I think the Left are the ones that deserve the hate.

SilenceInside · 19/07/2024 10:40

Just the comments he made (makes) about his daughter Ivanka are enough for me never to want him to be in charge of any decisions that affect women and children. So, any kind of political office, let alone President of a major international superpower.

Those comments are documented, videod, evidenced etc and not a matter of left or right opinion.

As is the outcome of the court case involving E. Jean Carroll. He is a sex offender ffs.

He's a bit like a US Nigel farage. With some added inciting of violence.

It's almost like Google has never been invented....

athosporthos · 19/07/2024 11:00

@sashh Oh my god! That is abhorrent. I've just read a bit more on his stance in the matter and I am sickened. He's after making it a criminal offence to get an abortion with no exceptions Shock

It's almost like Google has never been invented....

I did Google. I googled "why do people hate Trump", all that comes up in the first few pages are political debates, articles from both left and right wing so expressing very different views on him, and news of the attempted assassination. No clear examples of anything personal about him/shitty things he's done. Thought I'd get more direct information from people who are more clued up and have followed the news about him more closely.

Am not even sure I’d call it left-wing, probably centrist or champagne socialist but yes you need to form your opinion by gaining knowledge from other sites.

Also read up about Trump Derangement Syndrome. Some may say this thread is a classic example.

SilenceInside · 19/07/2024 11:31

"Trump Derangement Syndrome" is a classic example of a thought-terminating cliche, imo.

@athosporthos I'd recommend looking at a wide variety of sites, and do some simple fact-checking of what you read from all sources. It's worth remembering that pointing out that Trump has some very serious character flaws and poor previous behaviour is not an endorsement of any other politician.

FUBAR77 · 19/07/2024 11:34

Aside from everything already mentioned, I also think Americans (not all obviously!) are crazy!!

Did anyone see in his speech yesterday lots of people in the crowd had plasters on their ears?! Just would never happen here!

Also Hulk Hogan there ripping his TShirt off 🤪

Why does everybody hate Trump?
GasPanic · 19/07/2024 11:35

Everyone doesn't.

Otherwise he wouldn't stand a chance of getting elected.

If you want more insight into American politics the better question is probably to ask why people like Trump.

Although that would probably end up being a thread filled with posts by people all saying that people everyone who likes Trump is an idiot.

Violinist64 · 19/07/2024 11:40

I don’t hate anyone - it’s far too strong a word - but with Donald Trump I have a strong and visceral dislike. Where do we start? He’s a megalomaniac, misogynist, egotistical, corrupt criminal with a low IQ and no conscience who should not be in charge of stacking shelves, never mind the most influential country in the free world. It is alarming that his finger is allowed to be anywhere near the nuclear power button. The boorish manner in which he treated our late Queen on his state visit to the UK was disgraceful. Is this enough for starters?

stayathomer · 19/07/2024 11:56

He wanted to ‘build a wall’ to keep Mexicans out and smiled and laughed and started a ‘build the wall, build the wall’ chant at a rally. That kind of started it for me

Thisisadilemma567 · 19/07/2024 12:05

For me it was the family separation policy of immigrant children that haunts me. Literally pulling toddler from their mothers. It was a policy deliberately cruel to act as a "deterrent". There are still many children that have never been reunited with their families.

'Like a kidnapping': Migrant family separated under Trump reunited after four years www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-64959802

PocketSand · 19/07/2024 12:08

Yes trump is an odious individual but politically you may be better to question the support he has. In certain circumstances there has been a turn to the ultra right wing that attack rights of women, disabled, gay immigrants etc. it's not new but it is alarming. We do not want to go there. It does not end well.

WhereAreWeNow · 19/07/2024 12:15

For me it's:
-His stance on abortion
-His stance on guns
-His stance on immigration
-The building of a wall on the border and separating mothers from children
-His leading an insurrection at the last election.
-The allegations of rape
-His open boasting of sexual assault
-His international policies including withdrawing support from Ukraine.
-His dumbing down of politics, dragging us all down into a Twitter swamp of playground insults, lies, smears, and bullying. All dressed up as populism.

There's probably more but those are the things that leap to mind.
