This article from the independent makes sobering reading. Whether the England team Win or Lose the studies quoted in the article show domestic violence increases when they play a major match.

What can we do as a society to help stop this?

The dark truth behind England football and the ‘high stakes’ on and off the pitch

England till I die. For some, it’s not just a football phrase, it’s the cold, hard truth. Sonia Twigg reveals how football can be a catalyst for domestic abuse

My dad has never and would never be violent but he takes football so seriously I can see how that level of caring could lead to violence. He gets really annoyed if any of us even suggest before a match that England might lose. I don't get it at all. It's a game. They'll do the same thing next year and someone else will win

Sparklybutold · 14/07/2024 15:25

It's been like this ever since I can remember. Before football it would have been something else. I think research has shown that one of the most effective ways to tackle DV is for peers to stand up to male family/friends when they start displaying worrying behaviour. Of course sometimes there is no indication. With women's centres closing down and reduced funding, again women have to bear the brunt of some men just being dicks.

Crunchymum · 14/07/2024 15:27

Is it football or is it excessive alcohol?

MonsteraMama · 14/07/2024 15:30

British football fans are a fucking embarrassment wherever they go, they have an appalling reputation for a reason.

I don't know what the solution is. Confining all football fans to a human zoo until the match is over so they can behave like animals in a controlled environment?

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 14/07/2024 15:34

I started working in a domestic abuse role more than fifteen years ago and this was well known then, it's also not just football, any event that includes alcohol, add emotions and high levels of toxic masculinity like you get with football and it's a recipe for disaster.
The only way to stop it is to tackle the overwhelming misogyny across every aspect of our society. (I'll wait here for people to come and tell me it's not the poor mens' fault and women have equality now.....)

Devilsmommy · 14/07/2024 15:39

@MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira completely agree with you 😊

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 14/07/2024 15:42

I was telling dh this the other day - that dv massively goes up with an England match and he scoffed at me and said what a load of crap, where did you read that?
Next day, our county police put sonething on fb about it and all of a sudden he took it more seriously.
It is shocking and all l can think about when watching the national team now.

redskydarknight · 14/07/2024 15:42

Surely domestic violence is unaccepable at any time - whether it is related to sports or not?

Massive sweeping statement there. My dad, uncle, grandad, me and my sons don't deserve locking up because of some cunts that would be cunts regardless of a football game

Longma · 14/07/2024 15:48

It is, though I don't think the stats are limited to just when England play. Sadly I think male violence, especially in the home, is pretty wide spread across the world and is exacerbated by big football (and probably some other sports) matches.

Longma · 14/07/2024 15:49

Crunchymum · 14/07/2024 15:27

Is it football or is it excessive alcohol?

Both I suspect.

PortiasBiscuit · 14/07/2024 15:51

My uncle was a miserable git for days if his team lost. This was the 70/80s and he was never violent but what my Aunt and cousins put up with. Madness really!

ByCupidStunt · 14/07/2024 15:55

As a PP said, the only way to clamp down on domestic violence is for other men to call men out on it.

Women calling men out on it hasn't made any difference.

MichonnesBBF · 14/07/2024 15:56

And yet we have schools being shit talked over social media because they are not allowing a later start on Monday..
This is the exact reason why...we are a safe place for children living in shitty situations.

Of course it is. It's just it's going to go up tonight. More people will be affected.

Exactly this, and also all nationalities have their share of sport hooligans not just the British. Just to show the other side of the coin I have just seen this on twitter/X showing a German policeman having a great time with the English fans in Berlin. This is the kind of thing that should be encouraged. (hope the link works) Goes without saying that DV is completely unacceptable at any time. x.com/FBAwayDays/status/1812476407664025775

NecessaryNC24 · 14/07/2024 16:05

I can see this unfortunately.

Literally could'nt have a normal convo with ex for about 2 full days if his team lost.

And they say women's moods are unreasonable 🤷🏻‍♀️.

I take exception to this, English fans are a disgrace. Welsh fans won the fair play award during Euro 2015 and the Mayor of Bordeaux actually said he would welcome any Welsh fans/people back to his town.

frozendaisy · 14/07/2024 16:06

Men need to sort this
Other men should make these fucking grunts social pariahs
They should live alone

You put decent gentlemen like Southgate, at top of football

SonicTheHodgeheg · 14/07/2024 16:07

I was surprised to read on here that DV increases more with a win rather than loss.

Yes I had assumed a loss makes it worse but no. It increases when England play. That's it. That's all.

You can’t stop it in isolation.

Until domestic violence is stopped, then there will always be national event that spark it off.

It’s not surprising it rises. There’s a lot of excitement and a lot of alcohol. Positive or negative outcome means heightened emotions plus drink and it’s a powder keg waiting to go off.

Domestic Abuse needs tackling properly across the board.
