Can I just point out that it’s not always men !

my son came to watch the game last night with his partner. We have a big screen and a pre match bbq.

DH DS and me aren’t really into football but watch games like last night, DS partner comes from a football loving family but like us only watch the big games.

so bbq and wine, and maybe more wine than was sensible with the game, none of them drunk but happy. I don’t drink. When we scored she decided a celebration gin was needed, my DH joined her but DS working today so said no. I think it was that gin that pushed her over the edge. We lost, she was not happy, we all tried to ease the sourness that was now the evening, cleared up and went to bed, they were sleeping over.

an hour later we woke up to her slamming out the house, my DS came in the room, nose dripping blood, black eye. DH ran down the road to find her because I was worried a 25 girl at that time. I ended up driving her back to her parents.

Oh my goodness. I hope she's an ex girlfriend now

I'd never heard the term either

I hadn't either, I find the 'under a rock' comments so trite. Not all of us are exposed to the same things. It's not a failing.

I would suggest it's ALCOHOL that's the problem.
And the government - of either colour - will always make so much money from sales of it that it will never change.

I would suggest that it's overwhelmingly men that are the problem. It's rare for women to beat their partners, drunk or otherwise.

It's not football, it's booze. Early matches mean that abusers are drinking all day. They've found that later matches lead to fewer crimes.

Is it football or is it excessive alcohol?

Its a combination of factors. Football creates an emotionally charged environment and alcohol lowers inhibitions and impairs judgement. Cocaine use around football has become increasingly common and police and researchers have raised concerns that it’s contributing to aggression and violence. If someone already uses their partner as an emotional shock absorber then football becomes another outlet

I thought of this when I saw the result last night - I felt for all the women who might be dreading their partner's return from the pub.

The figures are an increase of 38% when they lose and 26% when they win or draw. These figures come from one small study.
