This article from the independent makes sobering reading. Whether the England team Win or Lose the studies quoted in the article show domestic violence increases when they play a major match.

England till I die. For some, it’s not just a football phrase, it’s the cold, hard truth. Sonia Twigg reveals how football can be a catalyst for domestic abuse

When England win, a certain portion of the fans take personal credit for it and thus believe that the victory makes them superior beings, not to be crossed or messed about with in any way. Any perceived or invented slight will be seen as an attack on their greatness. Victory and defeat will be accompanied by copious alcohol. Both can be a trigger for violence.

Every time England win our street gets vandalised by the morons from the local pub. I hope they lose. Pubs allowed to be open till 1.00am, it will be a nigjtmare

I wonder how many will be over the limit for driving tomorrow but will get behind the wheel anyway

Good god, do we really have to have 'not all English fans are like this' as an acronym as well now?

Do you not see anything a bit pathetic in that Germany have pointedly said that they English fans have behaved this time? Did you see a statement on the behaviour of fans from other countries? No, because they don't need a pat on the head. The English fans are being 'heralded' with what is actually a pointed dig, for 'being good' this year when they've been utterly brainless morons in other years.

Proper fans, from whichever countries, don't need their behaviour commenting on at all, it's a non-topic.

Edited

I think by "this time" they don't mean "for once", they mean "unlike how they were in the past". English travelling fan behaviour has improved massively in the past twenty years.

Men's behaviour behind closed doors is still a huge problem though.

There's a thread running about child-friendly places to watch the football. I wouldn't take my children anywhere near anywhere showing football - alcohol, swearing and boorishness. Ugh.

This is exactly why DH has just gone to the pub to watch the game and I'm at home with the children.

I actually quite enjoy watching big national games (not fussed otherwise and don't follow a club) but there is not a chance I'd take my primary aged children into that sort of environment. I don't agree with children being around drinking, swearing and bellowing, no matter how good people's spirits are. I remember being taken to sports events as a child in the 90s, I always found it frightening. Child friendly or not, the vibe of a football crowd can turn on a six-pence.

The DV aspect is horrifying. I've never been in that position, and being honest I even find it a pathetic when DH has a bit of a sulk on when his team or England lose a big match for a few hours. But that's all it is, he's a bit pissed off and I'm a bit eye-rolly 'oh grow up' about it. The idea that some women and children's lives will be made unbearable today because of what is a game, regardless of the cries of "it's not just a game!" makes me feel absolutely sick.

I don't know what the answer is. DV is a horror as old as time. Until widespread misogynistic views, the "banter" and all that shite is truly eradicated, I fear it will remain so.

DV that occurs on a football or sports date should not only result in a criminal conviction but where it does (sadly, not in anywhere near enough cases) then it should also be accompanied by a lifetime ban from all games and grounds, club or national, plus a lifetime membership on PubWatch or similar. You can't stop them watching it at home, but you can stop them attending matches and going to the pub to watch it.

SevernWonders · 14/07/2024 18:53

DSIL is on duty today (police) most of the calls that they come out to on football match days are fighting / DV. It is disgusting.

icelolly12 · 14/07/2024 18:58

To me the whole sport honestly seems like something from the Neanderthal era. The tribalism, racism, misogyny is all just absolutely vile and the celebration of the sport seems to give some cavemen carte blanche to commit violence and be abusive.

So sorry to those who've shared their stories from DV. All over a mindless game.

CopperNanoTubes · 14/07/2024 18:58

The only way to sort it is to deal with the inherent societal misogyny.

Harder than it should be because well over half the population are either blind to it or are ok with it.

Most men wouldn’t spot it if it belted them across the face, they’re very attached to their porn, sexist banter, and easy lives that are largely facilitated by willing women in their lives.

Sadly too many women have internalised misogyny so cannot recognise how much of their lives is highly beneficial to their men but not to them, and should you dare to suggest that they wouldn’t recognise it at all.

IMO there should be far more female only spaces so that women and girls have a chance to see how their lives could be, and to truly understand what equality should look like.

Stats like this should be a wake up call to every woman, but sadly it brings out the “I’m alright Jack” attitude in too many. I wish women stood up for women in the way that men stood up for men, or indeed in the way lots of women stand up for men!

@CopperNanoTubes Yup I've just seen a Facebook post pop up on my feed of an adult male England fan wearing a shirt with 'Hawk Tuah' and 69 on the back. It's has 14,000 likes and 1.9k shares. This is to a so called 'family friendly' game.

My point is the misogynistic 'banter' is all part of the 'boys club'. It's not unrrelated to the issue of DV and seeing women as less than.

K0OLA1D · 14/07/2024 15:44

Massive sweeping statement there. My dad, uncle, grandad, me and my sons don't deserve locking up because of some cunts that would be cunts regardless of a football game

Agree. That is nothing short of ignorance fuelled hysteria.

My mate's DH is out there with 2 kids - couldn't ask for a nicer bloke. Lovely family and really polite kids. Literally couldn't be further away from a hooligan if he tried.

Stereotyping never helps.

Hawking up a gob full of spit before a blow job (sorry) it became a meme from a young lady interviewed about 'your best sex move' which then turned into a lot of creepy comments/harrassment and she had to go into hiding for a while, although think she's got her own talent agency contract now 🙄

Nope Too busy actually having great fulfilling and respectful sex to be glued to social media constantly so i guess i missed this one

Ihopeithinkiknow · 14/07/2024 19:51

It's nice to see a post about something so serious turn into yet more arguing and bickering lol someone could start a thread about a fucking sandwich on here and by the end of it someone will be calling someone a cunt

MoggyP · 14/07/2024 19:59

frozendaisy · 14/07/2024 16:06

Men need to sort this
Other men should make these fucking grunts social pariahs
They should live alone

You put decent gentlemen like Southgate, at top of football

Yet if you say NAMALT, you are likely to be piled on.

But this seems to be a call to the men who aren't like that to play a key role

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 14/07/2024 20:35

Oversharingnamechanged, my heart was in my mouth reading your post. I am so sorry that you had to go through that. I can't imagine how it must have been for you as a child, not understanding what was going on, yet understanding everything that a child shouldn't ever know. Flowers

Some men deserve nothing. They should be flung onto an uninhabited and desolate island populated only by other thugs like them.

ThistleWitch · 14/07/2024 20:37

You've met men though? They are mostly twats.

If you want these things to stop then you need to stop generalising about people.

If you get upset with NAEFALT and NAMALT then maybe you should stop generalising about men.

She hasn't gone into hiding, she has been on various podcasts and has released her own line of merch (with her family's support). .

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 14/07/2024 21:07

FrippEnos, what absolute rubbish you post. I've already said 'proper' fans. What is there to take offense at? The ones who are not thugs - from any country - are covered.

We have to keep NAMALT and the like because posters cannot bear to think that their own precious Nigel would ever be like that. It's a disclaimer.

If you think that by my not thinking that a lot of men are arrogant, thuggish twats that they will stop behaving like that then you're deluded.

We will not agree; I've got nothing in come with apologists for bad behaviour.
