This is exactly why DH has just gone to the pub to watch the game and I'm at home with the children.
I actually quite enjoy watching big national games (not fussed otherwise and don't follow a club) but there is not a chance I'd take my primary aged children into that sort of environment. I don't agree with children being around drinking, swearing and bellowing, no matter how good people's spirits are. I remember being taken to sports events as a child in the 90s, I always found it frightening. Child friendly or not, the vibe of a football crowd can turn on a six-pence.
The DV aspect is horrifying. I've never been in that position, and being honest I even find it a pathetic when DH has a bit of a sulk on when his team or England lose a big match for a few hours. But that's all it is, he's a bit pissed off and I'm a bit eye-rolly 'oh grow up' about it. The idea that some women and children's lives will be made unbearable today because of what is a game, regardless of the cries of "it's not just a game!" makes me feel absolutely sick.
I don't know what the answer is. DV is a horror as old as time. Until widespread misogynistic views, the "banter" and all that shite is truly eradicated, I fear it will remain so.
DV that occurs on a football or sports date should not only result in a criminal conviction but where it does (sadly, not in anywhere near enough cases) then it should also be accompanied by a lifetime ban from all games and grounds, club or national, plus a lifetime membership on PubWatch or similar. You can't stop them watching it at home, but you can stop them attending matches and going to the pub to watch it.
