This article from the independent makes sobering reading. Whether the England team Win or Lose the studies quoted in the article show domestic violence increases when they play a major match.

I was surprised to read on here that DV increases more with a win rather than loss.

I hadn't heard this but it's actually even more depressing.

Shiningout · 14/07/2024 16:10

Yeah I live on an estate and can hear people getting rowdy and pissed up already, I've never experienced dv but does make me stop and think how nervous some women may be feeling today.

BowlOfNoodles · 14/07/2024 16:10

English fans are absolutely hideous ( some that is ) how saka has decided to continue giving hes all to England is despite the racial abuse he suffered at the last euros is beyond me. I live over the road from a pub the violence over football is shocking.

That's really interesting, I wonder if it's people drinking more and celebrating after a win?

frozendaisy · 14/07/2024 16:06

Men need to sort this
Other men should make these fucking grunts social pariahs
They should live alone

You put decent gentlemen like Southgate, at top of football

That is the common factor - men. Sadly it is. Not all men but it is always men.

I don't know why? I can't think of on suitable reason to excuse the ones who behave like this, not one.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 14/07/2024 16:12

There's a thread running about child-friendly places to watch the football. I wouldn't take my children anywhere near anywhere showing football - alcohol, swearing and boorishness. Ugh.

AquaFurball · 14/07/2024 16:13

Oddly enough don't see a similar trend over the cricket or curling

Sethera · 14/07/2024 16:14

About 20 years ago, we were on a camping holiday during either the World Cup or the Euros. There was a site bar where people were watching the game and we ran into them coming out, England having lost. Lots of shouting and swearing but I particularly remember a boy of about ten started kicking at a plant tub, swearing, and didn't stop till he'd destroyed it - no one stopped him or suggested this was wrong.

Floogal · 14/07/2024 16:14

Not just domestic violence. I've noticed a big increase in antisocial behaviour generally. Not forgetting aggressive begging, skint guys who want to watch England at the pub and think they're entitled to the generosity of passersby

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 14/07/2024 16:16

My ex beat me up the night England went out of Euro 96 on penalties. Combination of all day drinking, anger and just being a horrible horrible person.

My husband and I are football fans (not English though) and will watch tonight but I won’t be in any danger

It is unacceptable that Domestic Violence increases when England play football
NecessaryNC24 · 14/07/2024 16:17

I'm so sorry Bathsheba.

It's not acceptable because domestic violence is never acceptable.

Nor is it acceptable that men don't police other men. What's wrong with them?

MonsteraMama · 14/07/2024 15:30

British football fans are a fucking embarrassment wherever they go, they have an appalling reputation for a reason.

I don't know what the solution is. Confining all football fans to a human zoo until the match is over so they can behave like animals in a controlled environment?

Be honest you mean English fans. They are a lot better than they used to be. Unfortunately due to the reputation they can be attacked by other fans (like the Dutch) for that reason.

WithACatLikeTread · 14/07/2024 16:22

Don't blame it on the football. If a man is going to beat a woman up they will do it any occasion unfortunately. She could make his dinner wrong or be perceived to look at him wrong.

MsLavender · 14/07/2024 16:22

It's fucking horrible and depressing. I'm putting a post on my social media (as I do at Christmas time too) letting people know they can crash at mine if they're worried about DV now or at any time. I only have a sofa to offer but hopefully if anyone on my Facebook is experiencing it then it will help to know they have a safe place to go to for the night.

I know football has long been regarded as a trigger for domestic violence but the bigger picture is a culture of misogyny and violence which runs through many cultures across the world. We need a long term re-education process that makes this behaviour totally unacceptable.

Redruby2020 · 14/07/2024 16:23

TheBigStrawberry · 14/07/2024 15:23

My dad has never and would never be violent but he takes football so seriously I can see how that level of caring could lead to violence. He gets really annoyed if any of us even suggest before a match that England might lose. I don't get it at all. It's a game. They'll do the same thing next year and someone else will win

Domestic violence isn't just actual physical violence, it takes many forms.

Allthislovelygreen · 14/07/2024 16:23

It's all entirely correlated to alcohol. There are no reported increases in domestic violence after football matches where the man is sober.

The problem isn't football, it's alcohol and coke.

we do have a problem with alcohol, coke and football watching being a whole package though

I take exception to this, English fans are a disgrace. Welsh fans won the fair play award during Euro 2015 and the Mayor of Bordeaux actually said he would welcome any Welsh fans/people back to his town.

Germany have said how well behaved the English fans have been this time as well. So it's not all the English fans either.

Good god, do we really have to have 'not all English fans are like this' as an acronym as well now?

Do you not see anything a bit pathetic in that Germany have pointedly said that they English fans have behaved this time? Did you see a statement on the behaviour of fans from other countries? No, because they don't need a pat on the head. The English fans are being 'heralded' with what is actually a pointed dig, for 'being good' this year when they've been utterly brainless morons in other years.

Proper fans, from whichever countries, don't need their behaviour commenting on at all, it's a non-topic.

But my uncle is an England fan, who goes to all the games. So it's OK for people to lump him in with the scumbags?

I was a season ticket holder for my local team for years and years, my dad and uncle took me home and away since I was about 10 years old. Not all football fans are hooligans. The ones that are are the problem

You do realise that they have been attacked on several occasions during the euros for no reason? Yes we do need to point it out because they all get lumped together as hooligans.
