This article from the independent makes sobering reading. Whether the England team Win or Lose the studies quoted in the article show domestic violence increases when they play a major match.

The dark truth behind England football and the ‘high stakes’ on and off the pitch

England till I die. For some, it’s not just a football phrase, it’s the cold, hard truth. Sonia Twigg reveals how football can be a catalyst for domestic abuse

FrippEnos, what absolute rubbish you post. I've already said 'proper' fans. What is there to take offense at? The ones who are not thugs - from any country - are covered.

We have to keep NAMALT and the like because posters cannot bear to think that their own precious Nigel would ever be like that. It's a disclaimer.

If you think that by my not thinking that a lot of men are arrogant, thuggish twats that they will stop behaving like that then you're deluded.

We will not agree; I've got nothing in come with apologists for bad behaviour.

I haven't apologised for bad behaviour. so No idea where you have got that from.

And the increase in DV/DA is known across several sports across various countries.

You may not have anything in common with "apologists for bad behaviour" but your attitude won't help anybody.

But you do you. **

I agree entirely.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 14/07/2024 21:15

FrippEnos, It's men. NOT all of them, before you leap to their defence but it is men. Whatever they are doing, some of them are violent thugs and many of them have women running along behind them excusing them.

I'm fine with my attitude the way it is.

I won't respond back to you, whatever you post, we have absolutely no common ground. Thankfully.

I would have thought that finding DV/DA abhorrent would be common ground.
but whatever,

It is unacceptable that Domestic Violence increases when England play football exists

Of course. It just struck a chord with me today that whole my neighbourhood was getting jolly and looking forward to the football I had no idea if any of them were going to be victims of domestic violence later.

I was just about to start a thread on this, glad you have.
I've been thinking of it a lot over the last few days. Knowing that women are getting beaten for this stupid cultlike game is incredibly distressing. The bellowing from my male neighbours feels threatening and frankly Im sick and tired of its supposed overwheening importance.
Its a ball being kicked round a field fgs, the projection money and ego, personal and national, involved is off the scale.

It is well-established that reports of domestic violence increase during international tournaments.

Me too.

Fizbosshoes · 14/07/2024 22:38

I'm pretty sure I've read when temperatures reach a certain level (hot and sunny) then DV increases and I'd read about England football games too. Both are opportunities for drinking more than normal which I'm sure is a contributory factor.

I don't know what the stats are for any other sporting events, but i imagine football is the one because so many more people watch it.
I don't generally watch footie and dont support a team, but I'd watch a national game , but I wouldn't for rugby or cricket.

Parentingin2024 · 14/07/2024 22:44

I read that DV increases more when England win a major tournament. As previous posters have said it's alcohol, drugs, and misogynistic men that are the problem, not football. Just as Christmas isn't a problem, but DV rates soar then too. It's beyond comprehension that women are at risk from people that they should be able to trust and be safe around.

And loses.
Its not the win or lose, its the emotional hysteria the men wind themselves up with, and then reacts, both in the lead up and after.

British football fans are a fucking embarrassment wherever they go, they have an appalling reputation for a reason.

I don't know what the solution is. Confining all football fans to a human zoo until the match is over so they can behave like animals in a controlled environment?

English. Not British.
Scotland fans were applauded by the Germans for being so graceful in defeat.
Welsh fans don't cause problems.
And it's a minority of English fans. Unfortunately they spoil it for the rest of the country.

EsmaCannonball · 14/07/2024 23:31

I used to know a woman who would obsessively listen to the local radio station whenever the team her husband supported was playing. Anyone would have thought she was a dedicated fan but she actually had to keep aware of how the team was doing so she could prepare for how her husband might behave when he got home.

But with careful planning, support and no scenes, or it could get nasty.

When England win, a certain portion of the fans take personal credit for it and thus believe that the victory makes them superior beings, not to be crossed or messed about with in any way. Any perceived or invented slight will be seen as an attack on their greatness. Victory and defeat will be accompanied by copious alcohol. Both can be a trigger for violence.

Perfectly said

You've met men though? They are mostly twats.

But often only behind closed doors. They're charming and funny the rest of the time

Putthatonyourplate · 15/07/2024 08:44

Can I just point out that it’s not always men !

my son came to watch the game last night with his partner. We have a big screen and a pre match bbq.

DH DS and me aren’t really into football but watch games like last night, DS partner comes from a football loving family but like us only watch the big games.

so bbq and wine, and maybe more wine than was sensible with the game, none of them drunk but happy. I don’t drink. When we scored she decided a celebration gin was needed, my DH joined her but DS working today so said no. I think it was that gin that pushed her over the edge. We lost, she was not happy, we all tried to ease the sourness that was now the evening, cleared up and went to bed, they were sleeping over.

an hour later we woke up to her slamming out the house, my DS came in the room, nose dripping blood, black eye. DH ran down the road to find her because I was worried a 25 girl at that time. I ended up driving her back to her parents.
