In search of old-fashioned loo roll...(title edited by MNHQ at request of OP)

I am deeply weird and hate quilted toilet roll. I hope I’m using the right term. It’s what most stuff is like now - embossed and thick. I just want boring old plain loo roll. Until recently I was making trips to Waitrose just to buy their Essentials stuff but it’s just changed. I find it hard to tell in shops when you get packaging that isn’t transparent but I haven’t seen any obvious plain old-fashioned rolls for quite a while.

Can anyone tell me if it still exists and where?

Please note, I am not a troll and have no interest in what anyone does with the stuff!

The Sainsbury’s one is called SUPER SOFTER, not SUPER SOFT! It’s in paper packaging.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 17/09/2024 21:54

So happy I found this thread. I thought I was going bonkers when I suddenly found the Waitrose Essentials toilet roll really uncomfortable. Switched to Who Gives a Crap - used the bamboo one first, then switched to the plain paper one which to me seems softer. Not as robust as Waitrose used to be but not disastrous, and properly soft.

I use Naked Sprout and have done for a long time but it's nothing like what the op wants.

Oh, apologies then. I'd have thought it ticks the boxes. But maybe I misunderstood OP's loo roll needs.

I used to use Who Gives A Crap, and switched to Naked Sprout. Mostly because the former is made in China, and the latter is made in Europe. So, it felt more eco-friendly. I also dislike the fact Who Gives A Crap individually wrap the rolls. But, it might be a better fit, texture-wise, for OP

Crumpetdisappointment · 18/09/2024 06:34

super soft also in paper packaging, rookie error made by me

Poggishairtufts · 18/09/2024 12:05

I'd encourage everyone to write to Waitrose too to keep the pressure on for them to change it back.

Jojoanna · 18/09/2024 15:51

I'm with the OP it's impossible to find loo roll I like l, now Waitrose has changed.

Absolutely.
I logged onto Waitrose.com specifically to complain about this - I was not alone...

I completely agree. It has been driving me mad.
I think an answer might be Cushelle Original.

Has it got the smug Koala embossed on it?

I don't dislike Cushelle but imo it isn't as good as the original basic toilet roll

JossyP · 23/09/2024 08:38

Actually I haven't tried it yet - I asked a friend who uses it. There does appear to be two versions, a standard and the 50% extra version. It looks to me as if the standard might be closer to the good old Andrex original and the old Waitrose own. I'll let you know when I've tried it.
I would also agree with the lady who said Sainsbury's Super Softer. I tried it once and it was good but then I forgot which of the Sainsbury's ones it was! 😆

Crumpetdisappointment · 23/09/2024 08:40

Waitrose have reduced the cost of their new style essential paper in an attempt to influence people to try it, its still a No from me

Doubleraspberry · 23/09/2024 08:41

We’ve got the original and it’s got the koala. The Cushelle is lasting so long I haven’t needed to try anything else for ages but it’s coming to an end so am going to try the Sainsburys one next.

They don’t get the point, do they? It’s the product not the price. Their new stuff is like the cheapest stuff you can buy anyway.

We’re not rich but I wasn’t finding the cost of the old stuff an issue, and would have paid 50p or whatever more a pack happily if that was what was needed.

Agree.
See also Cadbury chocolate - I would have paid more to have whole hazelnuts.

MotherofPearl · 23/09/2024 12:57

Exactly OP. I too would be willing to pay more for the old Waitrose loo roll.

Waitrose, are you listening?!

Namechangeforcheese · 23/09/2024 13:06

Costco Kirkland loo roll is good.

Cookerhood · 23/09/2024 15:47

They changed it. I have a leftover old roll & it's much better quality. The current one leaves toilet roll crumbs all over your wiped parts!

EXACTLY!!

Wemdog · 19/10/2024 21:06

So I’ve finally found the perfect replacement for the old plain white Andrex loo paper. It’s Whisper 3 ply Classic Luxurious FLAT SHEET (that’s the most important thing you must look out for on the packaging), but it's not that easy to buy. I got it from ESupplies Medical on line. It’s £28.56 for 40 rolls. Don’t get the Whisper sold on Amazon, it’s embossed. Hope this is helpful to those still searching!

MotherofPearl · 19/10/2024 21:19

Thanks @Wemdog I'll check it out. Given that there seems to be plenty of demand for normal, plain, smooth, loo paper, it's strange that it's so hard to find. Manufacturers take note!

ProgressivePilgrim · 20/10/2024 06:13

I'm staying with a friend for the weekend. I noticed she has plain loo roll. Sainsbury Classic. Exactly what many of you are looking for -

Yes, I’ve previously posted that Sainsbury’s Classic super softer is plain. But the Whisper alternative is better quality

Apologies. I didn't read the whole thread.
I personally use Naked Sprout loo roll, which sort of has little dots all over it, but otherwise plain. I'm not fussed about whether it's quilted or embossed or not. My important thing is environment friendliness and softness. But, this thread made me notice loo roll more! When I clocked my friend's plain Sainsbury Classic, I got positively excited about reporting back to this thread! 😄
