In search of old-fashioned loo roll...(title edited by MNHQ at request of OP)

I am deeply weird and hate quilted toilet roll. I hope I’m using the right term. It’s what most stuff is like now - embossed and thick. I just want boring old plain loo roll. Until recently I was making trips to Waitrose just to buy their Essentials stuff but it’s just changed. I find it hard to tell in shops when you get packaging that isn’t transparent but I haven’t seen any obvious plain old-fashioned rolls for quite a while.

Can anyone tell me if it still exists and where?

Please note, I am not a troll and have no interest in what anyone does with the stuff!

Why can’t we care about it? I mean, I don’t think anyone is having sleepless nights but having a preference and wanting to find out if the thing we like is available anywhere doesn’t seem unreasonable. Everyone has preferences about things.

Why do you care so much about this?? Just buy non quilted stuff and forget about it.

almost impossible to find

It just seems like an odd thing to obsess over to the degree that you have tried several types. I understand not wanting anything too thick as it blocks the loo etc. Being so invested in the feel of something that has contact with your skin for seconds before being flushed seems OTT.

Lucky you not having sensitive skin. My middle aged nethers feel quite aggrieved after using substandard loo roll after my middle aged digestive system has been off on one.

I just want loo roll that stays in one bit when I'm wiping my arse with it.

Again, a difference between ‘obsess’ and ‘have an opinion’. Trying different types of loo roll involves the enormous effort of buying a different brand every time we need some to see what we prefer.

I was distraught after Waitrose changed their plain white loo roll in June - I just want the same - plain, non-quilted, non pattered soft loo paper - I found BUMBOO the best - tiny dots on it - barely noticeable, super super soft, recycled - I found better than ‘Panda eco loo roll’ one and ‘Who gives a crap’ loo roll. Slightly more expensive than normal but actually the roll is much much thicker than other loo roll and on subscription with Amazon is cheaper it’s £17.25 for 24 rolls but lasts a lot longer because the rolls are thicker than the Waitrose ones so happy I found it. Also numerous plumbers said don’t use quilted as it blocks the pipes

pinkfluffymonkey · 10/08/2024 16:23

Yes, I'm very upset by the demise of the Waitrose loo roll!

I bought two massive packs of Nicky Elite from B&M which were quite good.

Still looking for 'the one' though!

I suggest you buy the 'quilted stuff' and spend your evenings, by the fire, (not too close - toilet paper is combustible when dry) pulling it apart.

It's quite therapeutic. I sometimes do it to pass the time whilst sat 'there' waiting for a 'result'.

A major benefit is that you end up with TWO rolls of toilet paper! 😁
(But only one has a cardboard tube) 😒

Many loo rolls in France don't have a tube. I like it!

Yes, they had started to omit it in the UK too, but I think that's stopped now - another significant benefit of Brexit, I suppose.

that Times article doesnt mention how it is now embossed, as well as smaller

Yes it does!
"We recently embossed..."
Cushelle do one without a cardboard toll, I've just bought some to try it.

Crumpetdisappointment · 11/08/2024 08:15

ok @Cookerhood
but that was the point it was recently embossed, for me, not that it was smaller

Waitrose essentials. Not quilted or other such nonsense. Just nice quality old fashioned loo roll.

You definitely need to read the thread. Even the OP would do 😂

The whole point of this thread, it has changed!
Inferior texture, also less per roll. I complained and got a voucher for the value of the pack. Still looking for a replacement but I suspect that's toilet roll "progress".

EndofDaze · 11/08/2024 18:59

Ooops! Sorry. Missed the point entirely. Totally gutted about the bog roll though -used to travel miles to get it!!

GreenIvyy · 11/08/2024 19:20

Izal medicated from the supermarket? That tracing paper, that was available in the public loos/schools?

SoMauveMonty · 12/08/2024 01:22

I generally buy Tesco double rolls with the embossed design as it's pretty strong - quilted stuff plays havoc with my antiquated plumbing. All the completely plain rolls i've tried recently - including Andrex - seem much flimsier and/or shed fluff everywhere.
My Grandad worked for Bowater Scott who made Andrex, so that was the only loo roll we had as i was growing up and i feel really nostalgic for it now - never thought it would be so hard to get simple strong, unfancy, unscented, unbuggered about with loo rolls.....I'm also nostalgic for the coloured rolls Andrex did - we regularly had pink, peach or blue, but i haven't seen these in years :/

Doubleraspberry · 12/08/2024 11:51

Update on my own research. Sainsbury’s Stamford Street is plain and OK but not quite as soft. Cushelle Original is soft and a bit patterned but not too bad.

no i am impressed with cushelle,
less so with asda

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 12/08/2024 13:25

Funnily enough I was thinking about this thread just last night.

I like quilted but I believe it is not as quilted as it was when it was first brought out ! I feel it is rather less quilted.

sorry to hijack your non quilted thread.

LBOCS2 · 12/08/2024 13:31

Has anyone thrown Costco's own brand, Kirkland, into the mix? It's very basic but suitably soft.
