In search of old-fashioned loo roll...(title edited by MNHQ at request of OP)

I am deeply weird and hate quilted toilet roll. I hope I’m using the right term. It’s what most stuff is like now - embossed and thick. I just want boring old plain loo roll. Until recently I was making trips to Waitrose just to buy their Essentials stuff but it’s just changed. I find it hard to tell in shops when you get packaging that isn’t transparent but I haven’t seen any obvious plain old-fashioned rolls for quite a while.

Can anyone tell me if it still exists and where?

Please note, I am not a troll and have no interest in what anyone does with the stuff!

Update on my own research. Sainsbury’s Stamford Street is plain and OK but not quite as soft. Cushelle Original is soft and a bit patterned but not too bad.

Thank you for researching for us @Doubleraspberry! I've just got to the end of a 16 pack of essential Waitrose and had the horror of realising the change in the new pack. I could have written your OP myself... The new version is getting dropped off at the foodbank and I'm hoping to find some normal old-style loo roll somewhere. Did you try 'who gives a crap' and is it the answer?

Wemdog · 02/09/2024 23:20

I COMPLETELY understand what you mean and what you’re looking for. I too am horrified by the way Waitrose, the last remaining producers of what Andrew plain loo paper used to look like, have given in to embossing it. It’s just not true that plain loo paper, neither quilted nor embossed, is available in every supermarket, I’ve looked continuously.

Taklam · 14/09/2024 10:09

Thank you for your post, I don’t have an answer for you but we are long lost twins in our loo roll miseries!! I thought I was the only one miserable about the new situation and it is a relief to know I am not alone in my obsession for PLAIN and soft loo roll. I came across your post whilst searching for a replacement to what seems to have been the last ones at Waitrose too. It was soo much softer than all these criss cross lined ones. Ah well.

Hello! I’m resigned to Cushelle Original for now. We got a big pack and it seems to last well. But it’s not the same. I live in hope that Waitrose will repent and go back to the old stuff, like Coke and New Coke.

Plenty of ‘standard’ bog roll in Asda. Soft, but not quilted.
Dh buys the Asda brand packs of 24.

TheDogsMother · 14/09/2024 11:10

Haven't read the whole thread so apologies if I'm duplicating but during the great Covid shortage i found myself buying some bog standard (excuse the pun) Sainsbury's 3 ply, non quilted. That might be what you are after, but word of warning, it's not quite as 'resilient' as 4 ply.

PickAChew · 14/09/2024 12:44

Even Sainsbury's have gone over to the textured side. Their plain stuff, back when they did it, was far flimsier than the Waitrose one.

I picked up a pack of the Regina bamboo stuff from Ocado, this week. It's embossed and the rolls aren't much bigger than the new Waitrose ones but it's soft enough and sufficiently dust free that my bits have stopped feeling irritated and stands up well to the swampy bathroom after 3 people have showered on a cold, wet day situation that so much loo roll falls down on.

I wish I didn't have to resort to bamboo paper as it usually comes from China.

Doubleraspberry · 14/09/2024 12:46

I did try the Sainsbury’s stuff but it just wasn’t soft enough for me. There isn’t an Asda around here so they’re the one supermarket I never use.

There is another exciting possibility! A friend told me that she had found in a hotel recently. She brought me a sample of it! It seems really perfect. It’s called Newline Essex Whisper 3ply. I’ve googled it but it looks like the minimum order is £75! I’m going to call them on Monday and make absolutely SURE it’s completely plain and if they say it is, I’m going to combine an order for it! My husband is getting pretty bored with my obsession!!! I’ll keep you posted.

Doubleraspberry · 14/09/2024 14:23

Please do! We’ve got a garage with space…

There seems to be 2 types of Whisper, one says “classic” and the other “ultra”. It also seems you have to order at least 40 rolls as it doesn’t look like it’s available in supermarkets. My research will continue as I think it MIGHT be the answer.

ThelmaAndWuleeze · 14/09/2024 14:37

I think there is a mumsnetter in my locality wedded to your cause OP, I was in Sainsbury's yesterday and noticed the pack of Stamford St toilet roll had been slightly torn I guess to see what the quality was before purchasing (that particular brand has opaquey paper packaging so not see through)
I too, am gutted that Waitrose has changed their essentials TP.
That was my TP of choice (I have one full unopened pack of 16 in my secret TP roll cupboard 😆)
We are now using Tesco's Luxury soft (has a dandelion head type embossing on it but it is nowhere near as good)
Gutted I tells you.
Gutted.

And how to know which you want?!

Not sure, am going to see if they will send samples

AllHisCaterpillarFriends · 14/09/2024 15:43

I glad I found this thread. Twice recently whilst looking for a toilet roll replacement I've picked up innocuous looking packets, read them clearly only to find the fuckers are scented.

Annoyingly the latest ones are exactly what you want, old fashioned soft paper, but some absolute bobber has scented them all

Blackandbluesed · 14/09/2024 20:25

Asda Shades is normal non scented non textured non fancy bog standard good quality toilet roll.

Blarn · 14/09/2024 20:54

I am so glad this thread has popped up! I opened a pack of Ocado quilted last night. I don't mind quilted, I don't mind the flat smooth stuff, but none of it is the quality that it used to be. It is either not as soft, falls apart, falls into masses of tiny bits. And the tubes are bigger so you actually get a lot less on the roll! Why is the quality of everything going downhill?

helmettask · 14/09/2024 21:04

Ah I thought this was going to be about the pink and peach toilet rolls you used to be able to get. I’d love to have them again

TaffyandTeenyTaffy · 14/09/2024 21:20

Asda Shades comes in a non quilted one.

Wemdog · 15/09/2024 13:05

As I e said before, Sainsbury’s Super Softer classic white is the best I’ve found so far. It also comes in paper packaging which I approve of, like Andrex used to many years ago

Cherrysoup · 15/09/2024 14:55

Asda Shades double rolls. The single rolls are weird.

Wemdog · 17/09/2024 15:25

Think I MAY have cracked it! I’ve ordered on line 40 rolls of Whisper Ultra 3 ply classic. They assure me there’s NO embossing. What’s crucial is you get the one that says in small print FLAT SHEET in the bottom right hand corner of the packaging. I’m attaching a picture. Mine is yet to arrive so I’ll let you know if it’s all they say it is! 🤞
