In search of old-fashioned loo roll...(title edited by MNHQ at request of OP)

I am deeply weird and hate quilted toilet roll. I hope I’m using the right term. It’s what most stuff is like now - embossed and thick. I just want boring old plain loo roll. Until recently I was making trips to Waitrose just to buy their Essentials stuff but it’s just changed. I find it hard to tell in shops when you get packaging that isn’t transparent but I haven’t seen any obvious plain old-fashioned rolls for quite a while.

Can anyone tell me if it still exists and where?

Please note, I am not a troll and have no interest in what anyone does with the stuff!

I can update that Regina, whilst only having small patterns on it, is as scratchy as sandpaper.

I've actually become a little obsessed

That's a shame. I've tried a roll and quite like it but have gone back to the horrible new Waitrose stuff to get some used up and back to being sore - and that's while my guts are going through a calm phase.

no, dont like sainsbury's super soft, it is not soft,
thanks anyway

I just want them to bring back the coloured loo rolls of the 80s...but it's probably not environmentally friendly!
Love a nice pink or blue bog roll 😆

I thought it was going to be ok, did actually open it in the shop as it was a pack of 32.

I've just finished an accidentally bought scented paper so maybe I'm delicate. Can update in 32 loo rolls time 😂

They were still selling it in the early noughties, I remember moving to a house with coloured bathrooms and matching the loo paper until we could afford to replace them, we moved in 2002 and it was a few years before we ripped them out

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 17/09/2024 20:35

I just bought some lidl "Simply" which wasn't quilted, very rough though.

The Waitrose Essentials one was good, what did they do to it??

Kangarude · 17/09/2024 20:38

I could have started this post. I also used to travel to Waitrose for the essential. I think people thought it was a return to shortages, as i always bought 2 of the 24 packs a time. I’ve recently had to buy the new type and even DH has asked what’s happened to the loo roll. Following with interest

ProgressivePilgrim · 17/09/2024 20:40

Sorry. Not sure how that got posted twice! 🤭

AllHisCaterpillarFriends · 17/09/2024 20:46

@ProgressivePilgrim can you post a picture of the actual roll?

Sandwichgen · 17/09/2024 20:56

Naked Sprout: which is best, bamboo or recycled? And does it leave little pellets all over one's bits?

I used to swear by CostCo's own brand, but it has changed ....

MotherofPearl · 17/09/2024 20:59

Oh thank God - I am not alone. I too have been filled with utter despair following the terrible change to Waitrose Essentials loo roll.

I had a decent stockpile but it's finished now and I am looking for exactly the same as you, OP. Plain white, no embossing, no patterns, not too thick, not too thin. I really hope someone on here finds what it seems is now the Holy Grail of loo roll.

Beth216 · 17/09/2024 21:03

Waitrose have ruined their toilet paper, I'm with you OP. It now has a dotty pattern on it and is like a serviette or something. Used it for years and years and I hate it now too.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 17/09/2024 21:08

You need Izal in your life. It’s like wiping with sandpaper 😬

I thought the OP was referring to the grease proof paper bog roll of yesteryear at first 🤢

Gangstamummy · 17/09/2024 21:24

I’ve found my people! I was actually gearing up to post about this as we’re just about to finish our old Waitrose Essentials toilet roll stash and so bought another pack and Angry
It’s not only embossed, which my ASD son hates, but also less soft which seems a contradiction. Anyway suffice to say I am also following this thread for the holy grail of toilet paper - said DS refuses any embossing so things may get quite desperate!

I use the recycled one. I think the bamboo one is pretty similar.

Yes, will do, when I'm home. I wonder too if they'd send you a sample? Might be worth enquiring.

A complete aside but I'm going to PM you.

ShowOfHands · 17/09/2024 21:45

I use Naked Sprout and have done for a long time but it's nothing like what the op wants.

I have just experienced the change in waitrose toilet roll... Omg who has allowed this. Shockingly bad.

Hopefully they have taken note of the reviews people are leaving about it.

MountUnpleasant · 17/09/2024 21:49

I think Sainsbury's Recycled stuff is just plain loo roll.
