In search of old-fashioned loo roll...(title edited by MNHQ at request of OP)

I am deeply weird and hate quilted toilet roll. I hope I’m using the right term. It’s what most stuff is like now - embossed and thick. I just want boring old plain loo roll. Until recently I was making trips to Waitrose just to buy their Essentials stuff but it’s just changed. I find it hard to tell in shops when you get packaging that isn’t transparent but I haven’t seen any obvious plain old-fashioned rolls for quite a while.

Can anyone tell me if it still exists and where?

Please note, I am not a troll and have no interest in what anyone does with the stuff!

Sainsburys 16 pack is pretty good. I agree re not liking quilted!

Doubleraspberry · 14/07/2024 22:45

OK, thanks for all the recommendations. I will have a good look and report back!

Asda Shades.

protectthesmallones · 14/07/2024 23:13

Aldi or Lidl do similar own brand. Decent paper not quilted.

BeckyWithTheGoodHair010101 · 14/07/2024 23:18

Tesco luxury soft. They're double rolls. They're not quilted at all just soft and embossed slightly. Asda shades is similar too.

Domoda · 14/07/2024 23:27

Morrisons own brand

I think the issue is that I want more than non-quilted but am not explaining myself very well. If I find a brand that IS what I’m after I’ll be able to describe it better. Lots of the non-quilted now just feel really cheap and the brand I used to get has now gone wrong. They feel quilted to me but probably technically aren’t. Who knew loo roll could be so complicated?

You see I don’t want embossed in any way! And they all seem to be now.

Non quilted in all my local supermarkets in abundance. I hate quilted loo roll. It's like trying to wipe your bum with a marshmallow.

DickEmery · 15/07/2024 00:09

This is giving me Blackadder 'sitting on spikes' vibes.

PickAChew · 15/07/2024 00:12

When did the Waitrose essentials change? We've been working through a 24 pack seemingly forever but I didn't look at the pack I ordered last week that closely.

Doubleraspberry · 15/07/2024 00:16

Recently. It’s the first pack of the new ones that we’ve got.

I found a half finished old-style roll in a cupboard to show the difference. Hopefully it explains better than my failed attempt.

Old one on the left, new one on the right. All the non-quilted ones I have seen so far are similar to the new one.

Andrex Classic clean is pretty plain .

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 15/07/2024 02:13

You mean the stuff that used to come in paper wrapping and Asda had those huge metal storage racks with the packs tossed in? If you identified and removed the right pack., kerplunk style, you could get them to cascade out?

Doubleraspberry · 15/07/2024 06:38

Loo roll as it used to be.

Cocothecoconut · 15/07/2024 06:52

Asda - so soft is ok

LiterallyOnFire · 15/07/2024 06:58

I bulk buy mine on Amazon - mostly Andrex and cheeky panda - and very little if it is quilted or embossed (not that's the a criterion for me). So it's definitely available.

And recently I bought own brand Sainsbury's (double size rolls) because we ran low and they weren't embossed or quilted either.

Definitely still widely sold.

I think the issue is that you can't be sure until you open them and OP has such a horror of quilting that she wants to be sure.

lavenderlou · 15/07/2024 07:06

Have you tried the recycled ones? I got Ocado eco range and it's definitely not embossed. It doesn't have that "shiny" feeling. I imagine most recycled ones are similar.

I hadn’t actually realised how much I relied on the SAME SORT of loo roll until this happened!

I wish I could edit my title as obviously I’ve described what I’m looking for poorly. I’ve avoided change for so long that toilet roll technology has galloped far ahead of my understanding.

How has no one asked why? 😆

Is it purely personal preference OP? Or are you making something with paper mache/dressing up as an Egyptian mummy/recreating a bathroom for an early 00's tv drama?
