In search of old-fashioned loo roll...(title edited by MNHQ at request of OP)

I am deeply weird and hate quilted toilet roll. I hope I’m using the right term. It’s what most stuff is like now - embossed and thick. I just want boring old plain loo roll. Until recently I was making trips to Waitrose just to buy their Essentials stuff but it’s just changed. I find it hard to tell in shops when you get packaging that isn’t transparent but I haven’t seen any obvious plain old-fashioned rolls for quite a while.

Can anyone tell me if it still exists and where?

Please note, I am not a troll and have no interest in what anyone does with the stuff!

Asda Shades, won’t use anything else, but am extremely jealous that France still has coloured paper!

I’ve started my experiments. Aldi (DH thinks as he’s forgotten exactly where he bought it) plainish with a slight wave pattern. Big roll but lacks the softness. It’s a bit scratchy. I bought Cushelle non-quilted yesterday so will give that a go later on.

I did have a look in our mega Sainburys and from what I could tell from either sight or (in the case of the paper-wrapped ones) squishing, none of them are what I want.

I found nothing right in Tesco yesterday either, OP.

I was amused to find every type had a pack that had been opened so presumably another MN had been through before me.

I wish I'd known that that Waitrose paper was the last type in existence to have no pattern. I'd have been stockpiling it like mad. When did all the other brands become patterned, I wonder? Andrex even has a whimsical puppy pattern, like buying plasters with cartoon characters on. What are we, six??

ReframeFeelings · 19/07/2024 12:28

Can you honestly feel a difference when you're wiping?

Doubleraspberry · 19/07/2024 12:42

Yes!

We stood still as the world passed us by.

There are a lot of comments like this on the thread. I don't know why anyone thinks we'd be trying supermarket after supermarket if we couldn't.

We just want what we want. Is that so hard to understand? And, as the OP said, until very recently what we wanted was just the norm.

Doubleraspberry · 19/07/2024 20:23

I actually thought I was asking for something significantly less expensive and refined! All I ask is that it be softer than the cheapest or commercial ones. Other than that, I just want a basic thing (I thought).

Yeah I don't want to wipe puppies on my bum

Idontjetwashthefucker · 19/07/2024 22:04

Just make sure it's not scented, that took me by surprise! Why the fuck we need scented toilet paper I'll never know

PurpleBugz · 20/07/2024 00:35

No pattern not too thick and better for the planet too

ImRonBurgandy · 24/07/2024 18:00

Just found 2 packs (16 rolls) of the good stuff in a local branch so bought them!

Crumpetdisappointment · 24/07/2024 18:42

oh wow @ImRonBurgandy
lucky you
the Cushelle is not a good replacement

GuffyTheDustBuster · 24/07/2024 19:44

Here for everyone annoyed by the poor quality/value of the new style Waitrose essentials loo roll.

Also to pick up tips for a better replacement

SoapCollector · 25/07/2024 20:10

I've read that WGAC despite its eco credentials is imported from China, so that put me off buying it. But I'm not sure if other brands are produced in the UK.

SoapCollector · 25/07/2024 20:13

Posted too soon. Lidl loo roll in the big pack not quilted, it's one we buy regularly.

Crumpetdisappointment · 26/07/2024 06:16

cansu · 26/07/2024 08:33

Why do you care so much about this?? Just buy non quilted stuff and forget about it.
