In search of old-fashioned loo roll...(title edited by MNHQ at request of OP)

I am deeply weird and hate quilted toilet roll. I hope I’m using the right term. It’s what most stuff is like now - embossed and thick. I just want boring old plain loo roll. Until recently I was making trips to Waitrose just to buy their Essentials stuff but it’s just changed. I find it hard to tell in shops when you get packaging that isn’t transparent but I haven’t seen any obvious plain old-fashioned rolls for quite a while.

Can anyone tell me if it still exists and where?

Please note, I am not a troll and have no interest in what anyone does with the stuff!

This is a good question. I do feel this new stuff would be very poor at mummy-making. But it’s my own preference. I can’t get onboard with the newfangled stuff.

I saw a comment on Reddit recently from someone who worked in quality control for loo roll - they were saying due to some new process, more companies have ‘fluffier’ rolls recently, which sheds all over the place. I can’t stand that supposedly soft stuff that just leaves white powder everywhere!

After some trial and error we found that the ‘double size’ tesco and Sainsburys own brand don’t seem to do this. They aren’t quilted but they do have a pattern on (apparently the pattern was invented to stop sheets of paper sticking together, which is why it’s on most rolls now).

Crumpetdisappointment · 15/07/2024 07:40

it is because it uses less paper, imo

mitogoshi · 15/07/2024 07:41

Lidl have non quilted, think they all do, the cheaper stuff. Andrex still have non quilted too as my mum has it - will be from Tesco or b&m as that's all her town has

Tumbleweed101 · 15/07/2024 07:47

Tesco toilet roll is quite good. Not too thin but plain.

I shall do this, although as all I was buying there was their loo roll, it’s not hugely useful. But there have been some suggestions on here of other products they sell.

I agree that the driver for this will be money, and selling us less paper for the same amount. I did actually scroll past some article a while ago about the new Waitrose paper being less for more but hadn’t at that point appreciated the true horror.

I have actually asked MN if they can change my title (they will have nothing better to do) as it’s very obvious my requirements go well beyond just non-quilted and into the realms of slightly obsessive. I feel I now do actually need to buy quilted to check the difference although that presumably is the stuff that feels weirdly really thick and bouncy?

I could have written this post myself! Have emailed W to complain as been using their soft toilet roll for years.
Have you found an alternative?

Cookerhood · 15/07/2024 15:28

Whoever was suggesting WGAC loo roll. Doesn't it leave tissue crumbs all over your nether regions? I hated it when we had it.

ImRonBurgandy · 15/07/2024 15:36

Omg I was also horrified the other day when I opened the new pack of waitrose essentials and it was different!

PickAChew · 15/07/2024 15:38

It's very different. Down from 240 sheets to 190 smaller sheets. And look at the weight difference!

Love the research! It's awful conduct from them.

PickAChew · 15/07/2024 16:42

Just trawled through my order history for the last time I bought a pack. March. £11.50 for 24 x 240shts (I like to fill in the vowels on that) = 20p per 100shts vs the current price of £9.25 for 24 x 190shts = 20.3p per 100shts so at least the cost per sht is broadly equivalent but most definitely not the cost per gram.

I do the same. Cost per sht

Co-op do non-quilted paper.

WhereDidItG0 · 14/07/2024 19:47

Maybe you could find out where schools get their toilet roll from? It's probably bulk buy and not quilted.

Do schools actually have toilet roll nowadays?!

neither of my schools had actual toilet roll, it was that ridiculous little really thin sheets in a small box 😂 😂

PickAChew · 15/07/2024 19:50

LifeOfBriony · 15/07/2024 19:35

Co-op do non-quilted paper.

In tiny packs, at ours.

Doubleraspberry · 15/07/2024 19:51

I’m not sure I want one of those enormous rolls! Also they are Not Soft. I want the stuff that’s the same consistency as Kleenex-style tissue (basic, not balm).

I’m glad to hear I’m not alone in my outrage. I have emailed and have been asked to send a photo of the packaging and batch number. Which seems a little pointless. Give me £5 compensation for what you’ve done, Waitrose.

I think cheeky panda loo roll would definitely meet your requirements, plain, very soft but strong

Sundaysiesta56 · 15/07/2024 20:27

Oh OP I know EXACTLY what you mean! However poor I was I always bought Andrex standard loo roll. Then they introduced some kind of 'weave technology'? and it was absolutely not the same and I was constantly finding little rolled up bits stuck to me. Now I can't find anything plain like the old Andrex that is also properly soft. Watching this thread with interest!

PickAChew · 15/07/2024 21:01

I checked the reviews and in the past month they've been hammered with 1 star reviews pointing out that you can buy stuff like the new version in pound shops. "Waitrose" commented on a few saying they changed it to make it cheaper.

Doubleraspberry · 15/07/2024 21:26

If I’m shopping in Waitrose I’m happy to pay an extra £2 every few weeks for decent loo roll. The petrol to get there to buy it is probably more than that.

Great thread.
It all comes down to money. It always does. Shame.
