In search of old-fashioned loo roll...(title edited by MNHQ at request of OP)

I am deeply weird and hate quilted toilet roll. I hope I’m using the right term. It’s what most stuff is like now - embossed and thick. I just want boring old plain loo roll. Until recently I was making trips to Waitrose just to buy their Essentials stuff but it’s just changed. I find it hard to tell in shops when you get packaging that isn’t transparent but I haven’t seen any obvious plain old-fashioned rolls for quite a while.

Can anyone tell me if it still exists and where?

Please note, I am not a troll and have no interest in what anyone does with the stuff!

I’m totally with you OP. I chunter about it every time I do grocery shopping.

I don’t rate who gives a crap at all, it’s nothing like what OP is describing, she won’t like it either. IMO it’s the emperors new toilet roll and no one wants to say so because they have got a garage full of the stuff so they have to convince themselves it’s amazing.

PickAChew · 16/07/2024 07:28

I tried who gives a crap. Their ordinary stuff disintegrated in a steamy bathroom and I complained, so they sent me some of the bamboo stuff for free, which was nice but not as nice as the price should reflect. I see they sell in supermarkets, now.

I will have to be on the hunt, in about 3 months when we're running low. I'm the only female in the house so the only one who cares about not using sandpaper.

mitogoshi · 16/07/2024 07:33

The rolls I get for work from our stationary supplier (hope education) are not quilted, 2 ply standard paper. I admit I don't like it and have a roll of quilted in my drawer but you might

Those industrial ones tend to be pretty rough so probably not!

I’ve been looking at Waitrose social media and website reviews. I had no idea how massively unpopular this change was. I hope it’ll be New Coke and in a few months we can all just pretend never happened.

Sainsbury's own brand recycled is fairly plain. Their own brand double rolls have a wavy line but that is it.

I am a quilted loo roll avoider as we have narrow thirties plumbing in our flat and very cushioned toilet roll can cause .... issues.

I reckon you can find very plain paper from wholesalers that provide rolls for commerical premises.

Just trawled through my order history for the last time I bought a pack. March. £11.50 for 24 x 240shts (I like to fill in the vowels on that) = 20p per 100shts vs the current price of £9.25 for 24 x 190shts = 20.3p per 100shts so at least the cost per sht is broadly equivalent but most definitely not the cost per gram.

Does shts mean shits or sheets?

Second who gives a crap

Ours had 'property of the 'appropriate' education authority' on it. I used to wonder if they would like it back!!

Ours was made by a company called Newcol. It still said Now Please Wash Your Hands on every piece. I am guessing that it was a cheap version of the normal type. Useless as toilet paper, but great tracing paper.

HeidiWhole · 16/07/2024 08:47

Lidl do a soft (ish) non-quilted, as do Ocado (Ocado brand)

Poggishairtufts · 16/07/2024 15:39

I just wrote to them about this. There are dozens of 1* reviews on their site for this.

I'm with you OP, just want old school loo roll that lasts a decent time before needing to change the roll.

NanTheWiser · 16/07/2024 16:19

I purchased a 9 roll pack a couple of weeks ago, and was very disappointed when I got the first roll out, and wondered if it was just a glitch. Obviously not! Fewer sheets, smaller size, and much thinner. Waitrose should be ashamed of this product, and I suppose it is another of their cut-backs. Like, not getting the MyWaitrose voucher offers that they used to issue to loyal customers, now get just a few products that I never buy. They must be feeling the pinch…

Lavengro · 17/07/2024 15:32

Glad this thread is still going. I saw it in passing the other day and had no idea it would become so relevant to me until I tried to buy loo roll in Waitrose and realised what it must be about. I hate how Waitrose is changing or discontinuing ranges of all sorts of things. Like their own brand laundry liquid which disappeared for months and when it came back it was pods, so microplastics and the fragrance free one had disappeared. Now it's bloody loo roll, and without any notice at all. I had a massive stockpile a year or two ago but then I moved house and didn't have the space, so I can't even take my time to find a replacement while my personal stocks dwindle. I've bought a (small) pack of the new stuff to keep me going but like the OP I can't abide quilted or dimpled, or rougher loo roll either, of which Who Gives A Crap is definitely one, so I don't know why so many people are suggesting that.

Watching with interest and I will also do my own research. Please stop apologising for being weird or fussy, OP. What we're looking for is just normal loo roll fgs.

Crumpetdisappointment · 17/07/2024 17:29

dont forget to email and complain to waitrose @Lavengro

Doubleraspberry · 17/07/2024 17:35

Aw, thank you, @Lavengro. I’m sorry you’re also feeling frustrated!

WGAC the recycled paper is as you'd expect but the bamboo paper is OK I think. At least you get a decent amount on a roll, big cardboard centres and quilted paper all means much less in a roll.

Depend on it! Preparing my rant as we speak @Crumpetdisappointment!

And I'll definitely try the bamboo paper @JaninaDuszejko - looks like I'll be trying all sorts of things one by one tbh.

LiterallyOnFire · 17/07/2024 18:05

Nice NN @Lavengro

Norfolk connection? (Although I saw a cottage named after the book in Sussex once.)

Violinist64 · 17/07/2024 18:11

My husband found some Cushelle non-quilted rolls in Morrisons today. He bought a 24 pack of them! 🙄

Crumpetdisappointment · 17/07/2024 18:13

essential loo paper was about the only reason i went to waitrose,
and i was very loyal about it!

Doubleraspberry · 14/07/2024 19:35

Reporting back that the Aldi stuff is not what I’m after. I want the stuff that is basically like ALL decent loo roll (Andrex etc) was until it started going quilted. I’m suspecting it doesn’t now exist.

Non-quilted Andrex exists, just buy that? 🤷 I don't see the issue

NuzzleandScratch · 17/07/2024 18:23

So glad I found this thread! Was also planning to write to Waitrose about this. I took a photo of the back of the old pack vs new, and calculated that EACH ROLL now has nearly 7 metres less loo roll!! So we’re 63 metres short per pack! Planning to email them, but so glad to see the online reviews are hammering them over this. What a joke.

Asda own brand good. The pack has 6 in but supposed to be equivalent to 12. Recommend.

Yes, I second this.

Yes, yes, that's exactly the problem. Not enough piss on our fingers or shit under our nails. What the fuck are you doing with yours?? 🤔

Doubleraspberry · 17/07/2024 19:05

Um, OK.

The Waitrose stuff was very similar to Kleenex in texture but a bit thicker. It was my attempt to explain what I was after given how I was failing. To be honest though it’s basically like most loo roll was a for long time. It used to be standard.

And I use a totally standard amount of paper and have never blocked a loo with it unlike my children.
