Thread 14 - TalkLair: “What The Hell Are We Supposed To Use, Man? Harsh Language?”

1000 replies

Kucinghitam · 09/07/2024 18:27

(Previous thread 13).

Summer should be well under way, but the chilly wind, grey clouds and pouring rain beg to differ. Looks like 2024 continues to be a washout - on the bright side, the Tories got washed out too! In the TalkLair, we remain hunkered down keeping cosy and warm. The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

I love all of them, juicy sweet ones more than dry sour ones, and am SO THRILLED that Mouse was able to eat one.

What I used to love and haven't seen for at least ten years was Ugli fruit. Are they still available in the UK?

artant · 05/10/2024 18:03

No idea when I last saw an ugli fruit but it’d be years rather than weeks or months.

MouseMinge · 05/10/2024 20:52

In Morrisons today there were a lot of marked easy peelers of different amounts and they were all clementines. They also had tangerines sold as tangerines which was also the case in Waitrose the other day but my cheap ones, marked as easy peelers were also tangerines. That's up there with the dullest few sentences I've ever typed.

I can potentially top that.

I don't normally eat citrus fruit, but last year (or possibly the year before) I picked up some oranges from Waitrose that were either tangerines or satsumas and they were SO sweet and fragrant and delicious, I wondered why I hadn't been eating them all along. The following week I went to pick up some more but they were tasteless and dry, and then I remembered why I don't buy them.

These days I can barely eat any fruit or vegetable because zoladex has broken my gut.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 06/10/2024 00:04

Ugli fruit seem to have vanished, replaced by pomelos.

duc748 · 06/10/2024 00:10

Haven't seen an ugli fruit for ages, I used to love them.

Dotellhimpike · 06/10/2024 12:00

I don't know what that is, and am not going to google it.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 06/10/2024 12:01

I googled it earlier and saw a fruit a bit like an orange but sort of pear shaped.

DeanElderberry · 06/10/2024 12:08

Loose peel, so a bit like a giant satsuma, but with a sweet fragrant flesh - someone once described it to me as 'a fruit that smells like gin and tonic'. According to Google they are sometimes called Jamaican tangelos. I'm slightly comforted that other people miss them too.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 06/10/2024 12:09

My computer is dead and I'm using Mr Veg's but his desk is set up differently to mine and it's not very comfortable, plus it needs cleaning and so does the keyboard.

I'm very slowly managing to find my way into a few online accounts. Facebook has blocked me from using the 'find account' feature because it says I used it 'too fast'. Did I type too fast? Apparently you can contest the block but you have to be logged in to do so. Twitter accepts my email but not the username. I think I'll just give up on them both.

I've been slack with making back ups the last couple of years and have lost so much data! Work stuff, photos, emails, thoughts, bookmarks etc all gone up in a puff of digital smoke. We took the machine to the local fix it shop where they have a Linus specialist so we'll see if anything can be recovered. As it is, it feels a bit strange being cast adrift from computer land, but I'm starting to enjoy being online less.

Facebook is utterly fucking useless if there's a problem. I can't access it on my computer, only my phone, and repeated requests for a password reset have not been answered.

They also removed a post of mine a couple of weeks ago for "soliciting inappropriate personal information" - it was on the Sali Hughes beauty page, tallking about Birkenstocks. It was also from May 2023. So who the fuck knows.

Ha ha, I missed that!

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 06/10/2024 13:21

@SqueakyDinosaur in that case it's definitely not worth bothering. FB has too much censorship anyway.

Ha ha! Thanks, I especially liked the line about where she loved one so much she wanted it to give up smoking!

I had one removed recently for the same reason. It only showed me a fragment of the 3-month-old post, didn't tell me where it was from, and the reasons for challenging the removal were very limited. I suspect the real reason was 'it's a typo and your stupid algorithm turned it into an automatic link - not my fault', but that wasn't an option.

My long-term resolution to have nothing to do with anything from Meta remains unshaken.

Good idea. When I've looked at FB recently it's been so dull and not really worth bothering with. There doesn't seem much point any more.

DeanElderberry · 06/10/2024 15:51

The hassle a friend had when her Whatsapp got hacked was interesting - no help available, she had to contact everyone in every group she managed (100s of people) and eventually start over with a new phone.

I still find it invaluable for keeping in touch with distant family and work friends. My only issue was that a month or so back it was nothing but adverts and groups being shown on my feed, like one post from someone I knew every twenty or thirty posts from advertisers and groups. That made it pointless so I deactivated it. Went back a couple of weeks later and it seemed to have rectified itself but I am keeping an eye to see if that repeats, which I think it will.

duc748 · 06/10/2024 19:54

Anyone find they have a different mouse cursor on MN to anywhere else? Normal cursor is the usual white angled arrow. Run it over text and it turns into the 'capital I' shape, run it over a link and it turns into the usual 'forefinger click'. So far, so normal. But on MN, the cursor is a small upward-pointing arrow, with a small black dot under it. It will still do all the mouse jobs, but I don't see this effect on other sites.

Gonners · 06/10/2024 20:30

Nope, @duc748 - it's exactly the same as usual for me ... though my arrow is black rather than white (as are the pointy finger and the capital I).

duc748 · 06/10/2024 20:32

Wait! it's gone back to normal now! But it's been doing it for a couple of days. How odd.
