Thread 14 - TalkLair: “What The Hell Are We Supposed To Use, Man? Harsh Language?”

1000 replies

Kucinghitam · 09/07/2024 18:27

(Previous thread 13).

Summer should be well under way, but the chilly wind, grey clouds and pouring rain beg to differ. Looks like 2024 continues to be a washout - on the bright side, the Tories got washed out too! In the TalkLair, we remain hunkered down keeping cosy and warm. The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Goodness, I didn't know he'd died - and so recently. Me and Bobby McGee is one of the most memorable songs of my late teens.

DeanElderberry · 09/10/2024 21:17

I dare not do any repeat posts to fill up the thread because I did that earlier in the week and got put on cool-off (Mumsnet apologised when I appealed) and don't want to risk a repeat offense. There was a Kris Kristofferson thread in chat - and he got played a lot on the radio. Sad but good. Or good but sad.

Britinme · 09/10/2024 21:51

I used to work with a guy called Wayne Kerr.

Gonners · 09/10/2024 21:51

I only saw him perform once, at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970, but have no clear memory of it ... he was very much overshadowed for me by The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, The Who and Leonard Cohen!

<on edit> I speak of Kris Kristofferson, not Wayne Kerr!

artant · 09/10/2024 23:20

I was a very big Kristofferson fan in my teens.

In other news, my mum is 99 tomorrow. I planned to make a cake tonight and vanilla ice cream for a 99 but I went down with a cold yesterday. Just done a Covid test and, of course, it’s bloody positive. Bro is just testing mum but even if she doesn’t have it yet, there’s every chance that she will. Not the best 99th birthday present!

Britinme · 10/10/2024 02:58

Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that artant - fingers crossed that it's mild. Both DH and I had it in August and really were not particularly ill with it so I hope the same for your mum.

SinnerBoy · 10/10/2024 08:11

I don't bother to test for it now. I haven't been as ill as I was when I had it 2 years ago. I have some kits, but they may have expired now...

DeanElderberry · 10/10/2024 08:14

There still seems to be a lot of it about - not as bad as the summer. I can't understand why some people are not getting vaccinated (and get annoyed with them if they tell me how poorly they felt when they got Covid).

I had my flu and Covid shots last week.

Kucinghitam · 10/10/2024 08:21

Fingers crossed for a mild COVID, and that your mum escapes the lurgy @artant!

DeanElderberry · 10/10/2024 08:22

Of yes, sympathy Artant and I hope your mother escapes the infection and has a happy birthday.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 10/10/2024 10:34

Hope it's mild, artant. My niece and one of my stepsisters (not niece's mum) are both down with it at the moment.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 10/10/2024 10:36

Hope your mum only has it mild, artant.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 10/10/2024 10:38

I've got my computer back with all the data intact. Very impressed. Apparently there had been a power surge that fried two of the three hard drives, even though we use surge protectors. Weird, but glad to have all my stuff back.

Kucinghitam · 10/10/2024 10:54

That must be such a relief @Vegemiteandhoneyontoast! It's rather alarming how much we depend on our devices these days. I shudder to imagine the chaos if the planet gets hit with a big solar flare or similar.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 10/10/2024 11:19

I've wondered about that too, @Kucinghitam Reckon there'd be some epic tantrums and then people would get very busy being practical.

duc748 · 10/10/2024 13:42

Flu and Covid jabs booked for next week. And this year, I can have them at my own local surgery (just a few hundred metres away), rather than having to traipse into town!

kittykarate · 10/10/2024 15:46

My flu jab is on Tuesday, but no Covid jab for me unless the nurse is feeling generous / has a spare as I don't qualify under the past few years jcvi rules.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 10/10/2024 15:51

Flu jab next Friday for me. At the First Presbyterian church - not to be confused with the Presbyterian church or the First Non-subscribing Presbyterian church. All of which are within about 500 yards of each other. I know nothing about Presbyterianism, but can only assume they're an argumentative lot.

Gonners · 10/10/2024 16:09

Flu jabs for us next Wednesday at the local Boots, and Covid on 31st at the other pharmacy about 50 metres further on. Both are slightly closer than the GP's surgery, and the pharmacists are considerably less stabby. I do wonder if the nurses get fed up during those long vaxxing sessions - last time I went to the surgery (for a flu jab) the queue stretched down the road and the bloody woman nearly knocked me off my feet and left a bloody great bruise! It was almost as though she tripped and fell into me. She wasn't one of the regular practice nurses.

artant · 10/10/2024 18:04

Thanks all! My temperature is back to normal today so it seems like a mild dose for me and so far my mum is negative. She’ll have to wait til the weekend for a birthday cake but I have made some ice cream and got Ocado to bring me cones and flakes so she will have a 99th birthday 99! (She remembers 99s as a flake down the middle of ice cream between two wafers so she’s getting my understanding of a 99 rather than her own.)

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 10/10/2024 18:18

Glad you're feeling better, artant, and hopefully your mum will be okay too and will enjoy her 99. I've never come across her version anywhere.

DeanElderberry · 10/10/2024 18:53

Maybe this time it will be in the right place

NoBinturongsHereMate · 10/10/2024 20:02

I've never encountered that version of 99 flake - sounds like a cross between the version I know and an ice cream sandwich. I hope she enjoys her birthday ice cream.
