Thread 14 - TalkLair: “What The Hell Are We Supposed To Use, Man? Harsh Language?”

1000 replies

Kucinghitam · 09/07/2024 18:27

(Previous thread 13).

Summer should be well under way, but the chilly wind, grey clouds and pouring rain beg to differ. Looks like 2024 continues to be a washout - on the bright side, the Tories got washed out too! In the TalkLair, we remain hunkered down keeping cosy and warm. The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Thank you all, you are lovely. Crying at each other over FaceTime just doesn't quite do it. The only fortunate thing is that they live near SiL's parents, so she will have her mum and dad with her. Obviously I can't discuss the medical particulars as they aren't mine to discuss, suffice to say it is a very bad situation.

So sorry to hear that, Kuc.

weaseleyes · 29/09/2024 10:59

I’m so sorry, kuc. It’s horrible to hear such news and feel helpless. Even worse to be so far away

SinnerBoy · 29/09/2024 16:15

Sorry to hear about it, Kuc, it must be so awful for you.

Kucinghitam · 30/09/2024 09:41

They're at the hospital today/tomorrow for the necessary. I don't know what I could do to be useful from over here. DH suggested a flower delivery, but it's not really an Asian thing, so wouldn't be appropriate.

In more mundane news, it's got properly autumnal here - by which I mean I have got my heated faux-fur throw out of storage and am tapping at work email while wrapped up like a cave-person.

It's no better this side of the Pennines today. The constant downpour. (I don't suppose you were ever a Flann O'Brien fan, Kuc?)

DeanElderberry · 30/09/2024 13:53

I've driven past that several times and always wondered what the story was. Wondering still.

Kucinghitam · 30/09/2024 14:11

That is one weird log cabin!

And yup, distinctly wet and cold here.

(Haven't heard of Flann O'Brien, will Google).

Looks like a project that ran out of money. Shame as the building is attractive.

duc748 · 30/09/2024 14:49

FOB spawned a few catch-phrases for me and my mates years ago, in particular "the constant downpour" (from The Poor Mouth?). Also "the old grey fella", although these days, I'm more like that myself! 😃

Britinme · 30/09/2024 15:21

Cooling off here but temperatures are still in the sixties F, whatever that is in C.

artant · 30/09/2024 15:27

Dull here but not actually raining at the moment. Windy though and definitely autumnal.

artant · 30/09/2024 15:28

RightMove is hiding that house from me, annoyingly.

MouseMinge · 30/09/2024 20:37

Not hideously cold but definitely on the cold side with the temperature seeming to be heading downward.

Whig!

Screaming that at Universally Challenged.

duc748 · 30/09/2024 20:38

Aargh! Forgot it!

DeanElderberry · 01/10/2024 09:12

Morning all. The binmen have just come. I didn't actually need to rouse from my bed in my pyjamas and drag it out in the darkness last night after all.

(they often come before 6 and it was quite full so I didn't dare risk it when I realised I hadn't done the job)

SqueakyDinosaur · 01/10/2024 10:26

Winter duvet on the bed last night. Snuggly!

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 01/10/2024 11:08

We're still on the sheet/blanket/light throw combination and wondering when the quilt will finally go back on the bed. I think we last slept under it about May/June time but can't really remember. Saying that, the fire is being lit each evening.

Britinme · 01/10/2024 13:27

We're at the same bedding stage as you, but the heating hasn't come on yet that I've noticed, though it's starting to get a little cooler. We have oil-fired heating as this house doesn't have a gas supply or an open fireplace (we have an electric fire but it's mainly decorative).

DeanElderberry · 01/10/2024 13:31

I'm using an extra blanket to supplement the summer duvet some nights but not every night. And a hot water bottle. When it's really cold the cats snuggle nearer to me and to each other. There are stray hairs everywhere.

SqueakyDinosaur · 01/10/2024 14:17

I haven't switched on the heating yet, but I do like a warm bed. I'm much chillier since I had chemo - especially hands and feet.

duc748 · 01/10/2024 15:29

My bedroom never gets really cold, the warmth from the chimney breast probably helps. Still on summer duvet plus absolutely mahoosive heavy coverlet.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 01/10/2024 16:29

We never changed to the summer duvet this year, but did take the blankets off for a bit. One's now back on, and the first wheat bag is back in use. Full winter mode is 2 blankets and 3 wheatbags, so we've a way to go still.

I've spent the afternoon over at the community farm, and scratted enough apples to press 47 litres of juice.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 01/10/2024 16:44

That's a lot of apple juice.

I do like the word 'scrat'.
