What is your phobia?

I hate slugs, I just had to clean out one of those drain nest straining devices on my gutter and there was a slug in it, one of those khaki ones with an orange frill Envy. I'm grimacing now just writing that down. I feel tense and revolted that I know it's up there still. It's ridiculous but I'm going to be thinking of this all day and feeling a bit queasy all day.
Anyone relate to this?

I absolutely hate deep still water with machinery in it, quarries (and to a lesser extent reservoirs) in particular give me the heebeejeebies. That said I love natural lakes, rivers and the sea (but piers, quays, and pontoons, make me feel a bit queasy, and I'm not keen on plug holes...but the latter is because of witnessing a spider crawling out of a plug hole when I was four!)
Nb I don't mind spiders, just don't like them jumping out at me!

WayDownThere · 07/07/2024 13:52

Moths and butterflies, hate them equally and they freak me out if they flap about near me. And I know butterflies are meant to be pretty. They are just sinister moths with make up to me.

Claustrophobia. Found out when I had my first MRI scan. I panicked and they had to bring me straight out to calm me down. Put me back in, but I shook so hard it ruined the scan. 10mg diazepam did NOTHING for the second scan. I'll need a heavy dose for any future ones.

I used to be totally phobic of the dentist but spent years working on it (with IV sedation required for any treatment) and can now tolerate most things but I still sob in the car afterwards and the adrenaline dump is awful.

I can't bear ticks though. I take the dog to the vet to get them removed....

I also have misophonia and spend a lot of time in various estates of frustration or anger over ticking noises, dripping noises, and especially chewing or slobbering sounds.

Crinklycrisp · 07/07/2024 13:57

Heights.

foothandmouth · 07/07/2024 13:58

Rodents. Especially rats

Can barely write the word

PubicZirconia · 07/07/2024 14:00

Polystyrene 🤢Makes feel sick to my core.

RaraRachael · 07/07/2024 14:02

Slugs and snails for me too. I can't go anywhere near them. I have to attend to my dad's grave and I have to get my OH to clean out the pot that the flowers go in and there are always some lurking in it.

My dad used to go in the dark with a large tub of salt and sprinkle it on them.

PuttingDownRoots · 07/07/2024 14:02

Ghosts...particularly fictional ghosts.

It sounds stupid but I can get panic attacks at ghosts on the television...

familyissues12345 · 07/07/2024 14:02

My worst enemy phobia is Cleithrophobia - a fear of being trapped. I haven't flown for years and have only recently started to tolerate trains.

Im also terrified of rodents

I've always thought I was claustrophobic, but I'm not! It's this. I'm cleithrophobic!

Cactusali · 07/07/2024 14:12

Stairs, particularly descending them. Have to have a handrail to hold onto or I’m paralysed with fear.

Theoldcuriosityshop · 07/07/2024 14:15

NuffSaidSam.
Me too, I just always thought I was claustrophobic, I've never heard of
Cleithrophobic. I can't do lifts, trains or planes for the fear of being trapped.

JadeSeahorse · 07/07/2024 14:15

Wasps, bees, hornets!

Basically anything in a black and yellow striped jacket. Absolutely terrified!

familyissues12345 · 07/07/2024 14:15

@NuffSaidSam , most people have never heard about it, I always thought I was claustrophobic, but when I read about it it wasn't quite right, then I joined a FB page and it all made sense

PauliesWalnuts · 07/07/2024 14:16

Rodents and dentists.

Leglessly · 07/07/2024 14:27

Ha, I read the title and came to say slugs. I don't fear much at all, I have absolutely none of the common phobias (spiders, dentists, needles/blood, heights, claustrophobia and so on), but I am absolutely petrified of slugs and I have had panic attacks in the past when I've had one either on me or nearly on me. I struggle to even look at pictures of them, it makes me feel breathless and dizzy.
I am much less scared of snails and will move one (very gently by its shell) to safety if it's on a public footpath.

Cerialkiller · 07/07/2024 14:27

So many. It's a wonder I got anywhere in life.

Heights especially when not 'attached' to something eg like on plane.

Spiders, specifically if they can get to me/the idea of touching them.

Falling generally, so steep slopes/stairs

Dead things. Mummies and decomposing bodies in particular. Working on this one. I can handle bones and skeletons now.

Large animals that can squash me. Horses, rhinos, elephants etc.

Sea creatures larger then a cat when I'm in the sea. Plus jelly fish/anything slimy.

Anything to do with being underground in the dark with water, e.g. caving, water caving. My sister goes water caving and I'm just 😱 at the very thought.

Weed/sea weed in water (phobia is getting caught in it and the slimy feeling)

Weirdly I'm good with rodents, snakes and bugs for the most part.

CranfordScones · 07/07/2024 14:42

Spiders. Recently met someone - thought I'd finally found someone I'd clicked with. The pet tarantula was a bit of a deal breaker for me.

Flamingmentalcats · 07/07/2024 17:00

Driving. I have had to stop its got so bad. Just thinking about driving gives me massive anxiety

TheresMillionsSaidGeoffrey · 07/07/2024 17:04

Mountain driving, I have to do it at night.

YourMommaWasASnowblower · 07/07/2024 17:04

Spiders and clusters, like clusters of holes etc - especially when there is contrast between the background and the cluster.

MichaelFabricantsSyrup · 07/07/2024 17:08

Cheese Envy

FloofPaws · 07/07/2024 17:11

Holes 😳
Heights
Spiders
Holey spiders up the Shard

BearSoFair · 07/07/2024 17:13

YES slugs, they turn my stomach. Fine with snails though.

Spiders. Crabs - huge armour plated spiders, as far as my brain is concerned!

XMissPlacedX · 07/07/2024 17:16

Wind turbines, no idea why though 🤷‍♀️
