What is your phobia?

I hate slugs, I just had to clean out one of those drain nest straining devices on my gutter and there was a slug in it, one of those khaki ones with an orange frill Envy. I'm grimacing now just writing that down. I feel tense and revolted that I know it's up there still. It's ridiculous but I'm going to be thinking of this all day and feeling a bit queasy all day.
Anyone relate to this?

Moths. Even photos or dead ones give me the heebie-jeebies.

DinnaeFashYersel · 07/07/2024 17:20

Wasps

TomatoSandwiches · 07/07/2024 17:21

Billboards, the underside of ships, submarines, the stripy bit on a whales mouth.. makes me nauseous and eyes.

RabbitsRock · 07/07/2024 17:23

Not sure if it’s a phobia exactly but I hate moths, especially the big furry ones that go frantic round lights etc. I once did battle with a massive black moth ( DH wasn’t there & I’m not sure he really believed me or he thought I was dealing with a bat, which it absolutely wasn’t). I remember shouting on the doorstep “ Fuck off you black bastard”! I was convinced it had flown off then to my horror I saw it slowly flying towards me down the stairs….. I had never seen one like it before & haven’t seen one since, thank God!
Also can’t be doing with sprouted potatoes, especially when they’re in a bag so you can feel them but can’t see them. Ugh!

Endsofbells · 07/07/2024 17:24

Spiders but I'm working on this. One ran out of my shoe today and I wasn't the shrieking mess I usually am. I try to see them as cute 🕷️

Claustrophobia as well.

I struggle to watch the celeb get me out of here challenges. When the head goes into a box of spiders. My heart rate increases.

JustRollWithIt · 07/07/2024 17:24

Holes (circles) particularly symmetrical ones! Can't look. Makes me feel sick 😳

PTSDBarbiegirl · 07/07/2024 17:27

Rodents
Germs
Loud mouth breathing
Dams

RabbitsRock · 07/07/2024 17:29

Pylons really freak me out. Used to have nightmares about them as a kid.

LaWench · 07/07/2024 17:29

Gephyrophobia. Going over bridges, especially when over water. My heart races like mad when going over a footbridge and I feel faint. My family think this is hilarious 🤨, bunch of nobs.

When exactly does a fear become a phobia? I absolutely hate slugs, but wouldn't say I was scared of them. I'm also not very keen on heights,or enclosed spaces,or the idea of being trapped somewhere. My worst fear is spiders. Out of all my fears,I'd probably say this was a phobia.

muddyford · 07/07/2024 17:33

A friend and I were undecided about going on the London Eye. But I get claustrophobia and she's scared of heights. We didn't want to run the risk of us both gibbering under the seat for the duration so didn't bother in the end.

Cocteautriplet · 07/07/2024 17:33

I don’t like overly intricate things with small parts (like circuit boards) or overly pointy things (like the prongs of a rake or fork). I fear them coming near my eyes and it makes me mentally wince to see them. For years I thought it was just my mad brain but it turns out it’s a real problem called visual looming syndrome and there are a select group of us that suffer! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Spiders. Recently met someone - thought I'd finally found someone I'd clicked with. The pet tarantula was a bit of a deal breaker for me.

😱😱😱

purplerain37 · 07/07/2024 17:36

Being sick. Emetophobia. Absolutely petrified of it 😢

DominoRules · 07/07/2024 17:37

I have a phobia of flying, I get mega anxiety for a week or so beforehand and there is lots of tears! Flying again in a few weeks so I need to start making sure I’m well rested, practising deep breathing and meditations to try and take the edge off……

DontBiteTheCat · 07/07/2024 17:37

The sea. Not the shallow bit lapping the shore, I mean the deep, dark depths of the ocean. It’s so vast, it really freaks me out. I could never go on a cruise.

I hate rivers too.

avocadotofu · 07/07/2024 17:37

Rats/micr and heights.

StormingNorman · 07/07/2024 17:38

Stairs with no backboard.

There's probably a real definition but I think it's a phobia because of the physical reaction i have to them.
So interesting the difference between fear of being trapped and of small spaces being separate. I can also relate to that. My ds was describing his caving experience to me earlier and it sounded horrid. Being taught the right technique to get through a 25cm gap....just why would you do this? But I can see that is different to fear of enclosed space

Thalassophobia, fear of deep water. Especially if it’s clear and I can see down a long way. Only really get it if I’m in a rowing boat or canoe (something small) and not on a larger boat.

My son has a fear of cracked earth, like you’d find at the side of a dried up river. I think that comes under trypophobia.

GalileoHumpkins · 07/07/2024 17:47

Snakes
Celery
I also have high place phenomenon which I don't think is a phobia in itself but it does make me afraid of heights.

frecklejuice · 07/07/2024 17:48

Spiders. I absolutely hate them, can't talk about them or even look at them on tv. My dh repeatedly says that I must know they won't hurt me but it's not even that I'm just terrified of them.

Cooper77 · 07/07/2024 17:54

Spiders. Why do they have to exist? God gets an F- for them.

I also hate new housing estates. You know, the ones with far too many rabbit hutch houses all jammed on top of one another. I don’t know if it qualifies as a phobia, but I hate them so much. Actually, anywhere that is over-developed, with far too many buildings, makes me feel ill. Maybe it’s a kind of claustrophobia. I will literally drive two or three miles out of my way to avoid the new developments in town. As soon as I see fields and space and light I can feel my mood lifting.
