What is your phobia?

I hate slugs, I just had to clean out one of those drain nest straining devices on my gutter and there was a slug in it, one of those khaki ones with an orange frill Envy. I'm grimacing now just writing that down. I feel tense and revolted that I know it's up there still. It's ridiculous but I'm going to be thinking of this all day and feeling a bit queasy all day.
Anyone relate to this?

Transport. Driving especially. I just hate it. I find it all so dangerous & risky. Trains ok, flights ok but cars, coaches etc, I hate.

I think it stems from childhood, I remember being in an ice cream van (!) with my mum & she crashed it, we only rolled in a ditch but i remember being petrified about my mum being hurt/killed.

franke · 07/07/2024 22:49

Balloons.
Men's traditional pyjamas.
Sweating - I can't be in the same room as DH when he comes back from a run.

Moths and butterflies, hate them equally and they freak me out if they flap about near me. And I know butterflies are meant to be pretty. They are just sinister moths with make up to me.

“Sinister moths with make up” has actually just made my day 😂😂😂😂😂

Lift doors (and other automatic doors)

Steep drops/bridges where you can see down

All insects really
Cars/motorbikes/lorries running me over if I arrive at the crossing half way through the green man and it changes when I'm half way across

Vomiting. Mostly myself. Others too but only if it could be contagious - DH was very confused during our first year of marriage when I was able to sit and rub his back and comfort him when he vomited from a panic attack but ran a mile with rubber gloves and a Covid mask on when he had a bug a few months later 😅

wavingfuriously · 07/07/2024 22:53

Claustrophobia

moggiek · 07/07/2024 22:54

Claustrophobia/bridges/eating in public

Justcashnosweets · 07/07/2024 22:58

Heights, even relatively short ones, I can't even go up a ladder.
Spiders, but I am getting better with them.
Deep open water. Nope.

Friarclose · 07/07/2024 23:06

Another emet here! Mine is other people, especially kids because they expect me to sit there with them while it happens 🤢 I used to be scared of vomiting myself, a nasty battle with hyperemesis gravidarum cured me of that part. Exposure does work!

Also birds in particular pigeons and seagulls, most insects especially moths and butterflies, heights, driving.. life isn't the easiest when you live with many phobias!

Littlefish · 07/07/2024 23:18

Touching wet teabags
Flapping birds
Moths
Squeaky runner beans

Artesia · 07/07/2024 23:18

Balloons. Kids' parties are such fun for me....

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 07/07/2024 23:22

Flying ants ( queens looking to set up a new nest)

i hate flying ant day, I could just about stand the huge clouds of very large black things dropping formic acid at random, it’s the little ones clinging to the big ones which are the final straw…..

I don’t much like ants per se, but the flying breeders….🤢

Barnabyby · 07/07/2024 23:28

Emetophobia here too.
I work in a school. Thankfully only caught something from the kids once in 13 years.

My 4 year old DD has never had a vomiting bug yet so am constantly on edge, waiting for it to hit ...

HÆLTHEPAIN · 07/07/2024 23:30

All things blood pressure and heart rate.

Justleaveitblankthen · 07/07/2024 23:36

Slugs yes, grotesque. But I can handle the teeny baby slugs you get under damp wood or bricks.
They're cute.

The sea at night. Blackpool ancient Piers when the tide is underneath 😬

Beards absolutely freak me out. The long straggly ones, especially on 20 year olds with baby faces.
Pogonophopia 🤢

Holy patterns all close up. I can barely type it now and my head feels all scratchy.

RobinGet · 08/07/2024 00:00

I suffer with megolophobia. In particular, huge statues and ships.

That made me laugh. My son hates moths (‘moff! Moff! ‘ he used to screech ) because one landed on his face when he was 2, poor thing.

Gingernaut · 08/07/2024 00:03
