Re jury service: first time I was called I was c36. I was called again 4.5 years later (to be fair, I'd moved house so they might not have know than the Ms Prettybird unique name was the same one as at the old address) and was able to say I was exempt for 6 months and thereafter would need facilities to express and store the EBM
(for some reason didn't get called again for 2 years
). Served another 3 times since then and called another twice but didn't need to serve High Court so just as well . It's as if once they know you'll turn up, you're put on a list of "reliable" jurors
I'm 63 now so if they call me again in 1.5 years (no excuse for my "early call" as I've not moved house
), I'd be really unlucky to have to serve again after that, as you're exempt after 70.
I've been lucky with the juries I've served on as they mostly seem to have been decent people. However, I've never once got as far as having to deliberate as they've all been pled out (they were all variations of GBH and/or carrying an offensive weapon).
Dh has similarly been called loads of times. One of his times was at the High Court and was a rape and sexual assualt case, which lasted 3 weeks. The guy was found guilty of sexual assault (caught on CCTV: who knew that kissing someone "thank you" for directions without permission is sexual assault?!
) but not for the rape because the "fiscal hadn't led with drunken consent isn't consent"
Dh and another guy were frustrated because they knew the law, but most of the other jurors just wanted to get home and not continue deliberating, which would've meant coming back the following week
Those people were all then shocked when the judge read out the previous convictions (following the "guilty of sexual assault" verdict): that the accused had a string of convictions including being out on licence for murder (had been recalled after being charged: Dh realised he was in prison as he was coming "up" into the court, ie from the cells).
Bit of advice: if you do get called, even if you don't get selected in the ballot, keep the paper work as they don't seem to keep records
I was only able to date the last time I served because I'd sent dh a WhatsApp message saying, "I'm freeeeee" back in December 2020 (jury service in a cinema with a video link - interesting experience
). So when I got called again to serve at the High Court at the end of this month, I could tell them to bugger off
