Just seen this quoted on Twitter from the Financial Times, not such an inexplicable decision for them to go early

Yes, best to leave the mess for someone else to sort out!

Evenstar · 10/07/2024 09:14

Was just chatting to DS and he thinks Sunak was probably aware that he would have been ousted before an autumn election and chose to press the button ensuring that many of the plotters lost their seats.

Throw in the existing problems with prisons, the ongoing strike action and the imminent collapse of Thames Water.

Rather explains why Sunak looks so relaxed.

DuncinToffee · 10/07/2024 09:26

Sunak, standing down as party leader later this summer, can jet off to California and pop back for a few laps to his Richmond swimming pool .

He would look rather relaxed.

I did jury service once. It was both boring and shocking. Boring because you spend an inordinate amount of time hanging around, waiting to be called. Doesn't start till 10.30 and finishes at 4 (always thought that if they worked 'normal' office hours then we wouldn't have the backlog of cases we apparently have today!).

But also truly shocking. First case I sat on, the defendant was a young black woman. Prosecution case was as dodgy as fuck, i.e. all witnesses gave different versions of events. On legal grounds, therefore, we were bound to find her not guilty as we couldn't rule 'beyond reasonable doubt'.

All 12 of us troop into the jury room. The other thing that was shocking was no instruction as to how we to go about things, beyond electing a foreman - just left to it. Anyway. We all sit down - 12 strangers - and the very first thing that was said, by one of the men was - and I'm quoting verbatim, as I've never forgotten it - "well you can tell she's guilty, these black people are all the same." 😮

The problem was, (apart from that being absolutely horrific to hear), that from then on, I was determined to find the woman innocent. Which is just as prejudiced really. TBH it was obvious from the evidence that she was innocent, thankfully.

It made me hope that I never end up committing or being charged with a crime that finds me in a jury room with 12 of my 'peers'!

Piece here from X about a newly elected LibDem MP having to move, at the swearing in, so that Fartage could have a seat:

https://x.com/AlPinkerton who he said had obviously been enjoying his time in the 'tea room'

Zonder · 10/07/2024 09:56

Broken link @BIWI ?

DH just commented that 30p Lee looked very unhappy arriving with the rest of Reform yesterday and I’ve also noticed that he looks utterly miserable in every pic I’ve seen since the election. Wonder if he’s having buyers remorse?

Hopefully he’ll soon be remorseful enough to quit and trigger a by election.

Meanwhile, over on the 'Keir's First Day' thread, posters are complaining about his wife accompanying him to the US. How did she get leave, does she really work for the NHS etc.

RafaistheKingofClay · 09/07/2024 21:37

It really is ridiculous that we know how many MPs we have and we can’t fit them all in. Good job Sinn Fein don’t take up their seats. It’s probably about time the building was retired or just used as a museum.

If we are being honest with ourselves as a country, the commons is no longer fit for purpose.

And in an ever evolving "democracy" we should celebrate that.

When the magic money tree fruits again, we should have a competition to redesign it and sell British architecture to the world.

Once more.

Its nice to see the Tories have learnt that the voters like a united party.

SerendipityJane · 10/07/2024 10:37

Isn't it nice to be able to pass a day without giving a single thought to the Tories and their travails ?

I don't really see any need to report on them, being brutal. Invariably they are going to fuck up, so it's hardly news. And I'd rather put my efforts into moving on.

That said, it's worth highlighting (especially to the sore Tory losers) that had they actually read threads like this, they probably could have won. Ever single regular poster here was highlighting where they were going wrong. Admitted we were cheering it on. But we saw it and recognised it.

If McAllister, TUV, takes the Reform whip, then Reform gets the £15 million funding.

I don't think the could have won, some of them are so filled with hate that it is all they have. They hate immigrants, they hate Labour voters, but most of all they hate other Tories, and feel the need to loudly and frequently let it be known.

SerendipityJane · 10/07/2024 10:46

but most of all they hate other Tories,

Is this the peoples front of Judea .?

Anyone has any tinfoil left?

The very murky world of Mrs Sunak… As a Director of Digme Fitness, her Co-Director was Rupert Lowe, a newly elected Reform Party MP. Not only did the company go bust after taking £630,00 of furlough cash, owing creditors including the taxpayer £6.1 million but look at the correspondence address.

I was going to post last night that it’s been 5 whole days and the current government haven’t had a scandal or done something totally illegal or inhumane. Novelty.

I see today’s MN gripe is the Starmer’s holding hands. I’ve seen two threads on it this morning.
