The Kinnock picture is from the Tate Modern I think when Starmer was arriving there to make his acceptance speech after Sunak conceded around 3:30 am. I remember seeing them embrace and had a little weep.

cakeorwine · 08/07/2024 23:11

What's even better are the hexagonal maps - as maps like this exaggerate places with a large area but low numbers of population - such as Richmond and Northallerton for example versus inner city places.

This is the old one for 2019.
A new one would be fascinating

Looks like the term 'levelling up' is getting binned

https://x.com/lewis_goodall/status/1810355143637893459

Understand that Angela Rayner told DLUHC staff today that “she won’t be doing a Rees mogg with passive aggressive notes, those days are over.” Also said dept will revert to its former title of “Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Govt.”

Thank god!

It always reminded me of video games.

Proper departments with proper names! That's more like it!

AhNowTed · 08/07/2024 23:56

@NoDishiForRishi @DuncinToffee

Levelling up was such bullshit.

I'll bet in opposition, Labour balked at having to use it.

God almighty. The only monster here is her.

That's her leadership bid dead in the water. I reckon she'll defect to reform. If they'll have her.

newnamethanks · 09/07/2024 07:25

Practically certifiable. I'm consistently amazed that so many people apparently take her seriously.

They live amongst us.

Actually apparently they live amongst me 🤦‍♀️🙄

Luckily most people I meet are normal. I'm not sure why so many vote for her.

BitOutOfPractice · 09/07/2024 07:53

Christ on a bike. She’s vile isn’t she? Just vile.

Notonthestairs · 09/07/2024 08:31

Leadership election campaigns are expensive. I assume Braverman is hoping to raise her profile with the "Right" people to fund hers. Not sure it will work as she hopes - Truss was PM and still doesn't have that much of a profile in the US.

A thread on how to take the oath

How to take the oath. Speaker goes first.

I’m not sure that will be her leadership bid dead. Suspect the Tories are about to take a massive step to the right given they show very little understanding of why they lost.

I see the current attack line is going to be ‘Labour are letting all the prisoners out.’ They are so bloody predictable.

I think you’re right. I think they’ll move to the right and it will take another lost election for them to come to their senses.

Igotjelly · 09/07/2024 10:00

I think they’ll take a huge lurch right and then either whither and die (or be absorbed by Reform) or eventually move back to centre right and to being a sensible opposition party.

It’s not my cup of tea but there us definitely room out there for a sensible centre right party.

RafaistheKingofClay · 09/07/2024 10:15

They will eventually realise they need to come back to the centre right to win an election but I predict it taking more than 5 years.

In the meantime hopefully Starmer can make enough difference to the lives of those that are struggling that othering groups of people and blaming them for all the issues that some are facing loses its sting slightly.

My thinking as well, I’d be amazed if they reverted centre right anytime soon they’ve been reactive not proactive over the last fourteen years even more so now with the like of Braverman,Jenrick,Patel

RafaistheKingofClay · 09/07/2024 10:27

Everything I’m seeing looks like they are chasing after that section of voters that deserted them for reform. Very little about the voters that left them for Labour and the LibDems.

Starmer gets it. It’s in his speech about being a government for those that didn’t vote for them. I actually think Sunak might get it based on his resignation speech. Hunt gets it.

Notonthestairs · 09/07/2024 10:28

'Letting the prisoners out' rhetoric is very frustrating particularly as the Conservatives have been given an absolute free pass on this subject for many many months.
That is in part down to reporting - it should have been on the front pages for months now.

Not only did the early release scheme begin under the Conservatives they also oversaw a SEVEN FOLD INCREASE in dangerous criminals being transferred from high security jails to lower security ones.

'Figures disclosed by the Ministry of Justice have revealed that 721 prisoners were moved from the highest-security — category A — to category C jails last year.
This was more than seven times higher than the 100 who were moved in 2022 and the total was more than the previous seven years put together.'

Prisoners from lower security jails will be considered for early release scheme.

And aside from that the Consservatives 2019 manifesto promised 20,000 new prison places.

In fact there will be just 8,000 created next year (and primarily Cat C prison places).

40% of the electorate didn't vote.

The tory parties mission should be to find out why and make them vote tory, Not scrabble around like pigs in dirt for the votes that have already gone to reform and aren't ever coming back.

that's my free advice to the tories. I haven't even charged for it. Mainly because I know they won't put that much hard work in. Although admittedly I can't see Reform putting any work in at all.

SerendipityJane · 09/07/2024 10:40

Also, if only the Tories had held their own fucking party to account with 1% of the effort they are putting into holding Labour to account, they wouldn't have lost

E2A - seems GBNews isn't getting the same level of "hand service" from the new government that they were getting from the Tories. As if that is in any way a "story"

RafaistheKingofClay · 09/07/2024 10:45

It does appear that the media have finally discovered holding the government to account over the last few days.

It's so obvious .... you don't need to make any argument about bias it's so transparent.
