Going back to urban design, can I make a pitch for considering active transport and greening existing infrastructure. Properly segregated cycle and pedestrian infrastructure is a must.

We need to be planting more trees everywhere. it will go a long way to cooling urban areas as the climate gets warmer. Large open areas of paving and concrete are going to be ridiculously hot on a 39C day. Paddington Square seems to be a good example of what not to do.

SerendipityJane · 09/07/2024 11:23

Properly segregated cycle and pedestrian infrastructure is a must.

While I totally agree, remember the danger of isolating pedestrians from all traffic and creating huge runs that are a muggers/rapists paradise.

Very pleased with everything I've been reading so far. But I wish Tony Blair would keep his beak out. Fine for him to have talks with Keir in the background (if Keir wants them!) but stating stuff publicly (like the bit about ID cards) is an irritating distraction.

Or is that just me?!

BIossomtoes · 09/07/2024 11:30

Not just you. I really want him to STFU.

IClaudine · 09/07/2024 11:33

Yep. Blair needs to go away and take Mandelson with him.

BIWI · 09/07/2024 11:35

Yes, it's a bit of 'you've had your go, it's my turn now'!

SerendipityJane · 09/07/2024 11:40

The whole "we need ID cards to stop illegal immigrants" policy was so obviously a crock from the start. It was embarrassing having to put up with the (then Labour) government trying to justify it. Bearing in mind what did for it was not the rather innocuous idea of a card for ID. It was the dreadnaught domesday database they wanted to drag behind it. That was what people rejected. And the moment they could have had the scheme without the database, but insisted they "had" to have it, was the moment I knew we were (again, this was Tony Blair let's not forget) being lied to.

Also any ID card scheme automatically comes with a law for stop & check. Otherwise, in the nicest possible way, what is the fucking point ?

L1ttledrummergirl · 09/07/2024 11:51

I quite like anonymity, I really don't want ID cards. Happy to have my passport so the government (should ha ha) know who's in the country, but I object to needing ID to vote, and I object to being asked to prove who I am on somebody's whim.

ID cards are a no from me.

I think there are lots of points to ID cards tha5 don’t require stop and check. They would streamline bank accounts, DBS checks, mortgage applications, benefit applications and voting for a start.
Not that I don’t 8mag8ne the stop and check but was at the heart of the original proposals. It just doesn’t have to be like that.

CassieMaddox · 09/07/2024 12:04

Yeah Blair needs to go away. He's a hindrance not a help.

mibbelucieachwell · 09/07/2024 12:26

Ooh yes. So the must underrepresented demographics are black people and young people.

It's a shame they didn't look at people who have disabilities.

cardibach · 09/07/2024 12:38

Everyone ready for the first session with all the new MPs scrabbling for a seat because there are so many? It’s at 2.15 I think.

Adam Bienkov is tweeting about the PopCon

Here is one of his tweets

"Woke is essentially a form of female caring gone wrong," David Starkey tells the PopCon conference.

"It is catastrophic. The way we look after the poor is by making the rest of us rich. It's very, very simple"

That's just a reflection of society in general.

A complaint upheld against the BBC for claiming incorrectly that "In most UK elections, Scottish votes have been crucial to deciding who takes power”

This is a point I have made frequently.

Unfortunately this conclusion was only issued on 4 July (complaint dated from 4 January) so not only was it ignored because it was the day of the election but it also allowed Labour to have spent the whole campaign claiming that the Scottish seats were essential to it forming a Government Hmm - and despite the fact that they were obviously on course for a landslide.

prettybird · 09/07/2024 13:53

NB: not saying that the SNP wouldn't have lost the seats anyway. I think there was a degree of protest vote but I also know there were many people who were Indy supporters who voted Labour to "get the Tories out" Confused
