When my mum was a child, they were given a brand new, shiny council house. The council took everyone that were living in their street and moved them into the cul-de-sac together, keeping the community together before tearing down the old slum street and rebuilding there.
They had plenty of green space around them.
I'm probably very hypocritical because dh and I bought our ex council house from the people who used rtb, but it was in our price range and had plenty of space. We are surrounded by green hedges which are still maintained by most of the houses.
They don't build houses like that anymore. It all feels very much build by numbers, small characterless boxes that are overpriced and ugly looking. There is no thought on how people can live happy healthy lives in them, it's all about the profit.
