Since when have France and Sweden Been low tax economies?!

I worked in a private school for a bit. They did prefer to be called ‘independent’ but I never heard anyone, staff, student or parent, shorten it to indie.

Such a cringe making term!

newnamethanks · 08/07/2024 19:15

Yes. I believe it was the Blessed Thatcher who put paid to that? All that expensive space wasted on plebs, quite unnecessary.

MadameMassiveSalad · 08/07/2024 15:39

Starmers is particularly low. But I imagine with wanting to VAT indie schools he probably had to make some point about state educated people!

@itsgettingweird yes that the majority of the country attended state school and therefore would rather be led by people who actually give a toss about normal communities!

Now please stop with this "indie" nonsense. They are private schools for an over privileged minority. They are detrimental to an equal society. And if we can't get rid of them, then let's at least tax em!! 👏👏👏🌹🌹🌹

Oh I agree about giving a toss about state education - I've worked in it over 2 decades!

I use independent because that's the technical term and working in education it just comes out naturally. No offense meant. I work in special Ed so it's always referred to as independent specialist 🤷‍♀️

itsgettingweird · 08/07/2024 19:40

Piggywaspushed · 08/07/2024 17:34

Like 'super selective' , calling schools 'indie' is a MN thing. Never heard it before MN. I guess it kind of emphasises their freedoms from control.

That said, I taught a class the other day who didn't know indie music and indie films were shortenings of 'independent'...

Lots of schoolkids brought up on US culture think public schools are state schools!

Edited

Indie pop was my music of my teens 😂

I live very near to one of the largest LA housing estates in Europe, believe the building started in the late 1930’s they weren’t the biggest of houses but well laid out, large windows plenty of storage & the majority of them had really large front & back gardens nice wide roads, the flats were no more than two storeys high again had plenty of green space surrounding them, think they also have some of the last surviving Prefabs homes.
schools were built at the same time, parks, parades of shops, pubs, GP surgeries, baby clinics, swimming pools/sports facilities
most of the residents moved in at the same time once building phases were completed, they had a very strong sense of community & residents rarely moved out, over the years very many were bought under the right to buy majority of those purchased properties are now rented out privately or via the LA as temporary accommodation, what’s left of the council owned ones aren’t unfortunately maintained that well.

Terrifying scenes from Gaza via Channel 4. I'm watching a country being destroyed. So distressing

Never. It's accepted and all citizens just get on with it.

NoDishiForRishi · 08/07/2024 19:50

I see Cameron has scuttled back to his shed. 🙄

L1ttledrummergirl · 08/07/2024 19:51

@Notonthestairs thank you for that video, it is divine.

When my mum was a child, they were given a brand new, shiny council house. The council took everyone that were living in their street and moved them into the cul-de-sac together, keeping the community together before tearing down the old slum street and rebuilding there.
They had plenty of green space around them.

I'm probably very hypocritical because dh and I bought our ex council house from the people who used rtb, but it was in our price range and had plenty of space. We are surrounded by green hedges which are still maintained by most of the houses.

They don't build houses like that anymore. It all feels very much build by numbers, small characterless boxes that are overpriced and ugly looking. There is no thought on how people can live happy healthy lives in them, it's all about the profit.

Come over to the Conflict in the Middle East MN topic.

placemats · 08/07/2024 19:55

@AhNowTed in the rural constituency I campaigned for Labour, and a win, first Labour MP since it's conception, I was asked several times about Gaza. It matters even in mostly white, rural areas.

Shadow cabinet being announced now.

Dreamingofgoldfinchlane · 08/07/2024 19:58

id want to see green roofs or solar panels, decent water management to prevent flooding and hold water for later use.

We should be aiming much higher than this - well inmsulated/air tight builds, good quality heat pumps etc as standard at a very minimum.

BIossomtoes · 08/07/2024 18:37

There’s an estate of former council houses where I live that are snapped up the moment they hit the market. Really well built, spacious semis on huge plots, they knock all the new builds into a cocked hat. Really lovely family houses.

I bought my first house, an ex-council house. Bought my second a "private" estate (built in the 1970s)... was so rubbish I went and bought my third house as, again, a 1950s ex council house. Solid built, (that is right to buy) housing is the way forward to my way of thinking. Gives people a "cheap" way forward.... maybe I'm just too much of a socialist 🙈

CassieMaddox · 08/07/2024 20:03

Just seen Mims Davies is shadow for women and Equalities. Badenoch has moved to levelling up. Hollinrake has shadow of her old post at trade. Wonder if that's a demotion?

Good on Sunak for not immediately fucking off, Cameron style.

Heavenssakes · 08/07/2024 20:04

This is what council house building should be aiming at- Passivhaus standards

https://www.norwich.gov.uk/news/article/270/new_eco-houses_become_homes

That's what a Labour/Green city council could achieve during the last Government- roll it out nationwide.

I am not across the details, but there are regulations about these kind of things for new built social housing in Wales (dreadful Labour run), but oddly not new private housing.

Absolutely. I meant nothing untoward by it. Just that there is a whole section of MN dedicated to it, and discussion is, let's say robust. Your input would be more than welcome.

It should be both, but it's a certainly step in the right direction. I'm in favour of the mandatory fire suppression system for all new builds in Wales as well.

Absolutely.

As with 20mph speed limits in residential areas, there is much that England could learn from Wales.
In fact the Norwich housing example, and the London hospital (was it St Georges?) that is doing things differently, show that all the answers are out there, one just has to have someone interested in improving the country to encourage their wider up take.

It's all dreadful.

I've just caught up on the news and Russia destroying a children's hospital in Kyiv.

It's a scary world out there.

In other news there is outrage at Laura K making a comment to Ed Davey on Sunday along the lines of "congratulations - I suppose". Apparently she's not very good at not being bias. Not shit Sherlock!

Looks like the term 'levelling up' is getting binned

https://x.com/lewis_goodall/status/1810355143637893459

Understand that Angela Rayner told DLUHC staff today that “she won’t be doing a Rees mogg with passive aggressive notes, those days are over.” Also said dept will revert to its former title of “Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Govt.”

Excellent. Anything even remotely associated with RM should be binned.
