France is a bit of a relief. Is there any possibility that Trump can be stopped in any legal way or is that utterly scuppered? What a state to be in.

@user8800
Don't promote Lee Anderson....he's only 30p Lee not 50p 🤣 And don't hold your beneath re people in Ashfield voted him back in woth around an 8000 majority if I recall so I'm stuck with him again. Mind you, apparently he can round canvassing in election day when I was out and got sent a way woth a flea in his ear by 19 DS who told him of course he wasn't voting for him as didn't believe in anything he stood for so perhaps there's some hope for the future! Been rude and dismissive when people have asked him things before so probably didn't actually think he'd get in! Probably didn't help there are issues shall we say around the third place independent....

Not that I’m aware of, he’s virtually certain to be the Republican nominee. He now has a good deal of immunity for actions he took during his previous term so some of the pending cases may now go nowhere, and regardless won’t take place until after the election. Even his sentencing for his recent conviction has been delayed until Sept to allow them to consider the impact of the immunity verdict.

His continued appearances (e.g. at rallies and in his recent television interview with ABC) have only fuelled fears of cognitive decline, nothing they do now will allow him to win. Not to mention he has point blank refused to take a cognitive assessment and release the results. He certainly isn’t going to get any younger between now and Nov.

There are a number of options for the nomination (each with their own pros and cons) for example:

  1. Kamala Harris - the obvious choice and would have access to the funds and to Biden’s delegates. She polls poorly but has proven to be effective on issues such as abortion.
  2. Gretchin Whitmer - Governor of Michigan (a state the Dems need to win) recently reelected. She seems to be a popularchoice.
  3. Gavin Newsom - Governor of California. Very young, attractive and charismatic. Not likely to do well in the rust belt states due to California’s ‘woke’ policies etc.

That recent debate performance was awful for Trump and any young candidate with even the slightest vigor would have run rings around him. The issue is that Biden was just so much worse. Pretty much everyone (other than the Bidens) seem to think he needs to go in order for them to have any chance at winning.

This is my gut thinking @Igotjelly. But I always second guess myself. 🙄

tobee · 07/07/2024 20:48

I mean it's (almost) a worldwide emergency - the prospect of another Trump term but idk if anyone can get the President to agree that he is no longer the person to stop him.

newnamethanks · 07/07/2024 20:52

Yes, thanks. Grim. What is USA thinking? How can this be?

itsgettingweird · 07/07/2024 20:56

Yes great news from France.

Also means it's likely to be easier for Starmer to work with them as our nearest European neighbours (bar Ireland).

Isn’t it? It will doubtless upset some people though.

As evidenced by the thread in aibu

Jovan Owusu-Nepaul will go far, I hope.
27 years old! Such a future ahead of him.

I think so too. I'll be keeping an eye out for him.

EXCL: Labour is seeking unprecedented joint declaration with EU to usher in wide-ranging security pact covering defence, energy, climate crisis, pandemics & even illegal migration

Turns out there has been planning after all.

Dems need a white, young, straight preferably ex military type to win

Maybe, but are they even more zero with a replacement? 🤔 Plus it's still a few months out and what will it be like then? 😬

Depends who the replacement is I guess. Anyone have Michelle's number?

Yes. Really calm and dignified. Good for him.

Spandauer · 07/07/2024 22:59

French result is 🙌🏻
To add to the current optimism, I saw this on Xwitter.
(Dutch MNetters - does this sound legit?)

"Now to top it off, the Geert Wilders coalition is already looking unstable after only 3 days in Parliament.
^^
40% of NL voters think the coalition will collapse within the next 5 months (only 20% thought so a week ago)
^^
And latest polling shows the brand new NL coalition parties no longer maintain a majority"

Guardian "Sunak shell-shocked by election results". If that is really the case, it serves to demonstrate further just how unsuited to the job of PM he was. He appears to lack any sense of what the public mood is. That's a terrible quality in a PM of any stripe. And the remnants of the Party left behind to fight over the scraps look equally well-qualified. Must be something in the water.

It must have come as such a surprise 🤔
