I feel a bit sorry for Akshata. He probably had a massive tantrum when the exit poll came out.

tobee · 08/07/2024 00:15

I wouldn't wish that on Michelle though @Zonder sadly

tobee · 08/07/2024 00:16

In other news, who the fuck does the Daily Express think it is?

Thread 1 Starmer: A New Hope
tobee · 08/07/2024 00:20

The arrogance of the right, illustrated here by the above posts about Sunak and The Daily Express, that only they should be power.

L1ttledrummergirl · 08/07/2024 01:07

The 1922 committee being chaired by Clifton-brown. Shock They really are in trouble.

I'll never forget the night I was called to the customer service desk by a colleague (I was the first escalation point), because the was a female unhappy that the cheese she had brought to the counter was slightly more expensive than she thought as she had looked at the wrong ticket. The point I called management to make her go away, was when she told me she worked for Clifton-Brown, and "he would be hearing about this in the morning".

Bunch of clowns, and so entitled.

newnamethanks · 08/07/2024 06:38

I see Bufton-Tufton retained his seat. Astonishing. His reputation for interacting with constituents goes before him. But cheese now. That's important. Insufficient grovelling from you Littledrummer.

Gnomegarden32 · 08/07/2024 06:40

Well done France! Only wish the awful situation in the US wasn't looming over everything. Biden needs to go but appears to be in denial

French result is 🙌🏻
To add to the current optimism, I saw this on Xwitter.
(Dutch MNetters - does this sound legit?)

"Now to top it off, the Geert Wilders coalition is already looking unstable after only 3 days in Parliament.
^^
40% of NL voters think the coalition will collapse within the next 5 months (only 20% thought so a week ago)
^^
And latest polling shows the brand new NL coalition parties no longer maintain a majority"

From what my sister is saying, that sounds about rights, She calls them an embarrassement, first cabinet meeting ended up as one big argument,

Its interesting reviewing coverage of both UK and French elections.

The default positions appears to be right wing politicians should be in power - anything else indicates a failure by voters to understand the issues OR a fault in the system.

The natural order has been deposed by the stupid electorate. It is centre and left wing voters fault that the far right is on the march - look what you made us do, why cant you just do as you are told.

I posted quite a bit last week (and for months before) about the overcrowding in prisons. Having zero places in prisons is like having no available hospital beds - a failure of policy planning with dire consequences. Both have been extensively warned about for many years. It means the legal system can't function.

Such is the crisis Labour will now have to follow Conservative plans for early release to create space. There is no other way to handle this problem and have a functioning court system.

But the media are now spinning that as Labour's policy - rather than a very necessary emergency measure caused by chronic and predicted overcrowding.
Its not just shoddy journalism, it is a clear attempt to mislead.

Agree @notonthestairs The absolute plethora of lies being spread on MN right now is also bloody annoying!

What have I missed? I hoped the crap would stop once the election was done.

DuncinToffee · 08/07/2024 08:43

The early release of prisoners was largely under reported by the msm

@zonder The latest one I have seen is about Starmer means testing state pensions. Which has been mentioned by Labour absolutely nowhere. And of course the old favourite about Labour wanting uncontrolled immigration.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 08/07/2024 08:48

It can't be Tories spreading lies. They are magnanimous in defeat because they are the 'bigger people'.
I know this is true because I read it on Mumsnet.

I feel like this far right populism wave is a movement that loses or gains excitement based on what one country does, so I think Geert Wilders will suffer quite a lot from our results and French results.

Luckily we don't have to listen to the bullshit. Labour has 5 years to sort out the absolute devastation of public services.

I hope they go early and hard with all the difficult stuff like housing.

I think they will. This has all the hallmarks of a government in a hurry to make an indelible mark.

Reeves to announce housebuilding targets.

Presumably Reeves will be announcing a series of measures such as housebuilding targets that can be introduced by statutory instruments, and then a plan for further legislation in the longer term?

I see they are saying the vote was rigged. Remind you of anyone?

My first flush reading is the they are saying the system is rigged

So ... the UK has FPTP and it's right wing nutters thinks it's unfair (and want PR)

France does have PR and it's right wing nutters thinks it's unfair (and presumably would prefer FPTP ?)

The lesson here is clear. They will never be happy. Hence why you don't appease the, You don't "be kind " to them. You stand up to them. Every. Single. Time.

Is the French system PR, though? I thought it was basically FPTP for statewide elections, albeit with two rounds of voting.

At this point it's a distraction. As is the FTPT grumble from Farage (and others here).

No system would ever be "acceptable" to a fascist. So it's not really worth trying to pander,

prettybird · 08/07/2024 09:32

I know I'm stating the obvious to those on these threads Wink but they only claim it's rigged when it works against them Hmm. They're fine with it when it works for them Hmm

That's why kudos should be given to those parties that steadfastly supported PR, whether or not they were benefitting from FPTP (like the SNP and LibDems).

StarieNight · 08/07/2024 09:34

@AhNowTed.. Where I live new massive tower blocks and housing estates are and have been growing everywhere.

It was said this morning, green belt will be under threat. And yet we also have huge vast new office industrial estates pretty much empty and large office blocks not being used.
I can't see wherever I am (close to London) where more houses will go?

I've also just seen a dentist being interviewed saying, we are in the mess we are in because of labours dentist contracts. Get rid of the those.

prettybird · 08/07/2024 09:38

@IClaudine - the French system is more akin to STV - but with the advantage that you can change your mind between rounds Wink

The French are used to this and can and do change their minds between rounds, both as a result of seeing who had got a lot of votes and because some parties pull their candidates (because they have to as they didn't reach the threshold or strategically voluntarily)
