Understanding Jay Slater case

Can someone explain what is known about this.
My brief understanding (and I'm possibly wrong) is that he had a scuffle and stole a Rolex outside the party he attended. Then went back to an Airbnb with two British guys he didn't know. Stayed there a couple of hours then attempted to walk back to his accommodation. Had a couple of phone calls with friends that give no particular info. The British guys are not involved (seems odd that he was with them). And JS is still missing or possibly hiding/kidnapped. Who has the Rolex?
It all sounds very convoluted and a clear picture would obviously help people understand.

I thought Fieldsofgold1 was joking.

Not really joke material though is it? This is a real person...

Whatever has happened to Jay Slater his parents must be out of their minds with worry. Some of the conspiracy theories are utterly bonkers. Only today I read that the Lucy friend was Shannon Mathews - it’s madness!

What I do know for a fact is there’s a specific person posting on his TikTok, Twitter and FB “solo searching”. This person has little to no professional experience of search and rescue and has earlier this year uploaded content from areas near to where we live. I have seen that content and where he was posting from pretending to be up mountains is absolute rubbish, where he took much of the footage is where we walk most days! He wasn’t anywhere near the summits of any of the mountains. He also pretended to be out searching for missing people when MR had already found those people and brought them down deceased. My DH is MR. It leaves a very bad taste in my mouth watching him upload content for views at such a harrowing time for this family. He’s shouting that MR need to go over to search for Jay, as if they’re not already out numerous times a week keeping people safe on our own mountains.

Personally, I don’t think he’ll ever be found and think there’s a lot more to this disappearance that no-one will every know.

Shannon Matthews 😬 wtf the girl is 18

Personally, I don’t think he’ll ever be found and think there’s a lot more to this disappearance that no-one will every know.

I’m genuinely not seeing the basis for “a lot more to it.” Everything seems to corroborate: the time and mast ping of the last phone call made from Jay’s phone match the location he’d told his friend Lucy he was going to with his new friends; Jay’s friend Lucy says she received a phone call from him early in the morning saying where he was and that he’d missed the bus; his new friends have been questioned and confirmed that he went home with them to that location and then left shortly before the time he’s confirmed to have called Lucy; an unconnected local resident confirmed she saw Jay in the village at around this time also and that he asked her about the bus and then began walking. None of it seems particularly mysterious.

The only thing driving all the theories about stealing drugs / being kidnapped by traffickers / some big conspiracy to make money seems to be that he was involved in an assault on a rival teen gang member back home a couple of years ago - and let’s face it, a bunch of idiotic kids from some backwater town fighting and feuding with each other is hardly international criminal mastermind stuff, is it.

No it was a psychic.

:)

IamaRevenant · 01/07/2024 18:38

As someone who has lost two friends in very similar circumstances this thread is pretty upsetting. One hanged themselves in a forest and the other accidentally drove their moped over a cliff. Please, your speculation is only going to hurt the family. It's clear Jay is not coming back so let's have a bit of respect.

I laughed like mad at that one.

buttnut · 01/07/2024 18:48

There are even cases like Andrew Gosden where somebody disappears into thin air despite being in a big city full of CCTV, years and years later nobody is none the wiser as to where he went. I wouldn’t be surprised sadly if this will end up another cold case.

I think people are coming up with silly conspiracy theories because this is the kind of thing that people who are poorly educated do. They're generally bored and leading dull lives and like to create drama and concoct convoluted stories around day to day events. They get themselves into sticky situations, sometimes involving the police and drugs and assume everyone has a shady backstory.

It is so ludicrous that it is verging on risible (and inappropriate, given that Jay's plight is no laughing matter).

But not because of age. I am pleased that Shannon Matthews has slipped out of the public eye enough for people to forget her age now, and that if she were friends with an 18yo really wouldn't be seen as odd for either of them

seagullstolemypie · 01/07/2024 19:44

I wonder why a case such as this has hit all the headlines and attracts such a lot of speculation and yet somebody like Jack O’Sullivan who is still missing having last been seen at Cumberland Basin in Bristol, never really gets air time?

Perhaps true for the conspiracies, however questioning inconsistencies and omitted information is surely normal human behaviour for those with efficient cognitive function. In a case where the public have been asked to help in a very high-profile manner; both in monetary terms, and physically on the search, I don't think you can expect blind acceptance of the "facts", particularly with contradictory information and reporting. If you've watched the numerous live reports, interviews, news articles... and don't have any questions, then you're not paying attention.

The first bit I think I’d just a conspiracy therory….and Rolex ie drugs.

the rest I think is proven. left with unknowns to remote location. Called friend in morning been lost ever since. I think an eye witness in the area saw him heading for a bus stop. And I also assume with timeframe still under the influence of drink or drugs.

poor young man and poor family.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/07/2024 21:17

He was away “celebrating” the end of his community service for his part in a violent crime

Definitely not true. His community sentence is not yet over

Thanks @prh47bridge; I was hoping someone would clarify and I know you follow these things pretty carefully

Alltheyearround · 01/07/2024 17:13

Can you explain? I thought it was a dog walker.

A dog walker found remains.
But going way back before that, a garda found her dunnes clubcard and found out it was hers, and knew it was foul play then.
Short version there but iirc it changed the whole course of the investigation.

PianPianPiano · 01/07/2024 21:29

I honestly think most people trying to "solve" this by social media mistakenly think they're playing some sort of online escape room. Trawling through webcam footage trying to spot anything "mysterious", going through everyone involved's social media profiles looking for "clues".

We used to do it as kids, convince ourselves we'd seen something mysterious, copy down "codes" we found (graffiti, serial numbers, reg numbers, anything really!), make up wild theories about why 'that man has walked down the road twice' etc... We thought we were the secret seven. Some people don't grow out if that it seems...

I read another one that Jays mother and Shannon’s mother were cousins, and another that they were sisters. It’s horrible that someone’s child is missing and people are coming out with this rubbish.

I'm ashamed to say I'd never heard of Jack before this despite living in Bristol. He hasn't been prioritised in local papers at all

People are inconsistent. We all regularly do things which from the outside might appear like bizarre choices to have made and actions to have taken. Teenagers on a festival holiday with their mates are particularly unreliable narrators: scared they’ll get into trouble with the police if they admit to having bought and taken drugs; scared they’ll get into trouble with their mum for doing all the things she warned them not to do as she waved them away to the airport. I’m not in the slightest bit surprised that the timeline and details have changed slightly as the search has gone on for weeks and his friends have realised that shit’s got real and he isn’t just going to waltz through the door of the hotel room worse for wear and with a story to tell about where he’s been, and it sinks in they need to spill anything which could help. The job of the police and search and rescue is to investigate and find - not give the general public up to the minute satisfactory answers to all their questions or provide them with clues so they can enjoy their armchair sleuthing. It’s not a choose your own adventure book where every detail is a puzzle piece.

LawlorsNaa · 01/07/2024 22:49

He is in hiding. His mate Lucy set up the go fund me to pay of whoever Jay Slater owed.

Not very plausible is it when a witness saw him walking up the mountain road and his phone location was in the mountains.

moggerhanger · 01/07/2024 23:00

Bromptotoo · 01/07/2024 13:46

I thought I saw something like a scavenger there in March this year.

Wikipedia suggests the Egyptian Vulture is present

Restricted to Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. It's an endangered species anyway, so not many around even in areas where they do occur - certainly not enough to do the film-set circling overhead thing (would be fantastic if there were though!)

LawlorsNaa · 01/07/2024 23:02

All speculation. His phone could have been planted there and some randomer said she seen him. It's a scam.
