Understanding Jay Slater case

softmauve · 01/07/2024 10:14

Can someone explain what is known about this.
My brief understanding (and I'm possibly wrong) is that he had a scuffle and stole a Rolex outside the party he attended. Then went back to an Airbnb with two British guys he didn't know. Stayed there a couple of hours then attempted to walk back to his accommodation. Had a couple of phone calls with friends that give no particular info. The British guys are not involved (seems odd that he was with them). And JS is still missing or possibly hiding/kidnapped. Who has the Rolex?
It all sounds very convoluted and a clear picture would obviously help people understand.

All speculation. His phone could have been planted there and some randomer said she seen him. It's a scam.

Ah well. Glad you've solved the mystery.

So what you're saying is fact?

I think people are coming up with silly conspiracy theories because this is the kind of thing that people who are poorly educated do. They're generally bored and leading dull lives and like to create drama and concoct convoluted stories around day to day events. They get themselves into sticky situations, sometimes involving the police and drugs and assume everyone has a shady backstory.

What a rude and judgemental post. Do you feel good about yourself after posting that? Good grief! Confused

blueeyes12 · 01/07/2024 23:20

@ComtesseDeSpair I agree, people are inconsistent and unreliable. Naturally this would also apply to the only eye witness/air bnb owner, upon whose account the entire timeline and direction of travel seems to be based.
I didn't state that inconsistencies related to the people involved; I meant moreso the reporting. In a case like this, accurate facts and timelines are surely important, especially at the beginning, to increase the likelihood of reliable sightings or more witnesses coming forward. I disagree that a headline news story should not be subject to scrutiny or discussion.

It's now being reported that there is a parallel investigation into the disappearance; so it does seem there is more that warrants further investigation. People obviously caught wind of this, as I say the reporting has been somewhat odd, due to certain information not being released (or being done so incoherently) to the public.

MeandBobbyMcGoo · 01/07/2024 23:31

I think this case garnered such public interest because his mum said in one of her first and only interviews that whoever took him must give him back. And his friend, Lucy, didn't show her face on a Sky News interview. Both unusual. It is sad though, he is very young, I do hope he is somehow found alive and well.

I wonder why a case such as this has hit all the headlines and attracts such a lot of speculation and yet somebody like Jack O’Sullivan who is still missing having last been seen at Cumberland Basin in Bristol, never really gets air time?

I’ve been following Jack’s case, his parents just break my heart - I can’t imagine what they’re going through since March. Police failed to report him as a missing person even though they reassured the family they had and they missed a crucial part of CCTV. I believe his mother spotted it after viewing the footage.

He has literally disappeared, how can that happen?

I’d love to see Jack get more publicity, but it seems a missing persons case needs to have the makings of a Netflix true crime documentary to generate national interest.

He is in hiding. His mate Lucy set up the go fund me to pay of whoever Jay Slater owed.

Are they going to BACs transfer the cash to the criminals?

And one very clever/curious off duty Garda.

The two fishermen who were looking in the reservoir for fish set the ball rolling...One of them spotted something in the lower than usual water , and they pulled it up..
Leg restraints and a ball gag.

One of them thought it was a stag party getup, but the stuff looked too heavy duty for that.

He felt uneasy about it and told the Police - and the Copper retrieved a Nokia that astoundingly still showed the conversations between the killer and Elaine O'Hara.

Further up the hill, a dog walker had her dog bring her little bones...
The bones belonged to Elaine.

Her killer thought he had got away with murder as Elaine had attempted suicide beforehand.

Poor Elaine.

It was through her Dunnes clubcard on the keys he found that he found it was hers.

Personally, I don’t think he’ll ever be found

I think there’s a lot more to this disappearance that no-one will ever know

Those are slightly dramatic statements.

Wettone is a self-proclaimed expert in missing persons cases. Indeed, I can find no evidence of his involvement in any such cases prior to this article. He was indeed a police officer for 33 years, spending the bulk of his time in front line policing and rising to the rank of sergeant. This is just one step up from constable, so not exactly a high flier. He now teaches the Certificate in Knowledge of Policing to prospective recruits - this is a level 3 qualification (i.e. equivalent to A-level). He has no more information than the rest of us. The local police, of course, have a lot more. They haven't told us everything and there is no reason why they should.

Youdontevengohere · 02/07/2024 13:39

How so? It’s just an opinion piece.

Agree with the PPs. I think he was drunk and fell and his body is very sadly in a ravine or something. It's easily done, I have two friends who died similarly when in a foreign country after partying (separately) and one wasn't found for weeks and weeks as he'd ended up so deep in a remote forest.

Feel so sad for Jay's family.

Hmm yeah very easily done 🙄 like none of hs went abroad partying for years, and never heard anything like that

It depends on the terrain and what has been consumed. One of my friends took too much acid and hanged himself in the depths of a forest. The other accidentally rode a moped off a cliff edge while drunk.

I'm not sure what the eye roll about me mentioning my dead friends is for but I was just trying to say there may be an alternative to the current conspiracy theory narrative.

I do still hope there's a happy ending for Jay's family.

Well, I nearly ended up in a similar situation in Tenerife as a teenager. Got drunk, got lost up a hill and then fell all the way down. I was lucky to survive with superficial injuries.
I don't know anyone personally who got lost and died on holiday. However you only have to look at recent news reports since Michael Mosley's disappearance to realise how common this is! There are several tourists missing at any one time it seems - often lost in remote, mountainous/hilly places.

Alltheyearround · 02/07/2024 16:00

I hope Jay is found, but I have to say I do fear the worst if I'm being honest.

Taking risks on holiday is a well known phenomenon.

This is meant as something to maybe watch with the young teen in your life - not lecturing them but they can find their own conclusions from the stories of their slightly older and now wiser peer group! Hope people don't find it in bad taste but they are cautionary tales.

As a 20 year old, I lived in India for a while, and used to ride pillion on a motorbike in Goa, no crash helmet, no protective gear at all, just a summer dress and a care free attitude. The risks really came home to me when the young Indian man I was with skidded the bike along a dirt road with his leg under the bike. Took off the jeans and much of the skin from his leg, down into muscle (I wasn't with him at the time).

I would never have ridden a bike like this at home.

As a teenager, a member of an MC offered me a lift back to where I was living.

He had a big black Chopper that roared like a Demon.
I climbed up wearing flip flops and a long floating skirt... I has a borrowed helmet that didn't fit.

He roared through the streets of Kingston, I was gathering up my flying skirt, terrified lest it get caught up in the chain.

Had we come off, he would {Probably} have been fine, as he was clad in thick leather and denim, but my flimsy clothing wouldn't have protected me from a nasty Road Rash.

The daft things we do as teens...{Or some of us!}

Yeah exactly. I drove a moped off a (very small) cliff in Thailand and ended up with two black eyes, bruises and cuts all over my torso (I was wearing a crop top 🙈) and the cost of fixing the moped to the person I'd hired it from. If I'd done the same thing a bit higher up the road I'd be dead.

Teenagers/young people do stupid things. I think Jay has just acted as a typical teenager and it hasn't worked out as well for him as others. It's a tragedy in my eyes and all the conspiracy shit is quite offensive.

Is this what we can all expect nowadays if one of our children goes missing? Something, somewhere has gone very wrong in the world.

It’s horrible. Any case with unanswered questions is going to have this circus. It must be upsetting enough to have a family member / friend going missing but to deal with all these conspiracy theories is just extra misery.

The latest update is strange within itself. Why did the two guys book the airbnb 90mins before arriving? Most people pre book accommodation when going away, so they were obviously on the island.
