Taylor Swift .Generous donations for the UK food banks

I don't know anything about Taylor Swift.. couldn't name any of her songs.
But I've just read she's donated enough money to every food bank in every city she's played to last a year.

All my research shows that she will be making over £4bn on this tour alone.

I think that's an obscene amount of money to make from ordinary people, many if whom would have really struggled to afford the tickets for her shows, and I suspect these food bank donations are an attempt to make her look less bad.

Thelastbitofketchup · 30/06/2024 09:39

And or a tax write off

pantsalot · 30/06/2024 09:39

So what? Foodbanks have benefited brilliant, she didn't have to donate - it's embarrassing that there is a NEED for foodbanks in this country.

I’m not a swiftee. I could care less about going to her gigs and I don’t understand the hype people get wanting to go, BUT, I admire her for doing this. Not many celebs can say they are actively helping food poverty

Procrastinates · 30/06/2024 09:42

I love that people are critical of her for this, she literally cannot win. She doesn't need to donate any money, lots of other big stars don't and yet nobody uses that as a reason to be critical of them. Taylor chooses to give money despite being under no obligation to do so and yet still people moan.

Crunchymum · 30/06/2024 09:42

I read somewhere that TS would never do Glastonbury as it doesn't pay enough to meet her "charitable donation obligations" - ie its all written in to a contract.

So it's us chumps paying hundreds of pounds for tickets allowing her to make said donation.

Don't get me wrong, it's a good thing and she should be commended, but let's not make out she's being totally altruistic here. It's because it makes good business sense, making her even more appealing to the masses, who will buy her overpriced tickets for the next tour.

DirtyCheeseBurger · 30/06/2024 09:43

That's really impressive. Good on her
I agree it's a national shame that we need food banks.

Twiggywinkle13 · 30/06/2024 09:43

Taylor Swift has donated so much money to UK food banks (reportedly enough to have a lasting impact) she’s actually done more for them than the Tory government have for the last 14 years.

so instead of moaning about how much money she’s making from a tour - where she’s playing her own songs she’s written about her own life - maybe just praise the fact she’s also generous. She’s well known to be very good to staff also, having given the American truck drivers who move her stage $100,000 bonus each as they are away from their families.

She literally cannot win!

Donating to food banks?
Grabby cow

stillavid · 30/06/2024 09:45

She also gave very large bonuses to al her crews/drivers etc at the end of her US tour.

She makes a lot of money but she also gives back - but sure let's all criticise her for it.

Marblessolveeverything · 30/06/2024 09:45

She didn't have to do it, I assume similar artists may or may have. Isn't it nice to hear of a successful woman being considerate.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 30/06/2024 09:46

Yes the message coming out from Liverpool was enough for 11 food banks and 8 community pantries for a year.

Yes she makes loads of money from the tour but she doesn't have to do this. It also seems to be kept pretty low key announcement wise.

Crunchymum · 30/06/2024 09:47

I think this is going to be very polarising.

There needs to be a clear distinction between criticising her and making out she is a Saint for donating a very small percentage of her earnings.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 30/06/2024 09:48

She seems like a lovely person for doing that. It's really kind of her to give so much money. There's nothing bad about her having a massive sell-out tour, that's just ridiculous.

beguilingeyes · 30/06/2024 09:48

She was due to play Glastonbury a couple of years ago until the pandemic hit, so that's nonsense.
You don't hear anything about Springsteen/Ed Sheeran/Madonna (insert stadium act where applicable) doing anything similar, but TS does it and that makes her a bad person? Jeez.

Oh I think she's winning.... I don't think you need concern yourself over that.

Shortfatsuit · 30/06/2024 09:51

I don't really have an opinion on TS - neither love her nor hate her, and actually know very little about her. I'm sure that she makes plenty of money for herself on her tours, which isn't illegal - nobody is forcing fans to pay the ridiculously expensive ticket prices. But if a generous chunk of that money ends up in foodbanks to support the most vulnerable people in the cities where she plays, then I am very pleased about that. I'm really not sure why anyone would want to criticise that?

YellowHairband · 30/06/2024 09:52

pantsalot · 30/06/2024 09:39

I agree.

And it's not just a UK thing, she's done it round the world.

Of course it might be to improve her image (although I'd argue she really doesn't need to do that - she's not struggling to make money because of a bad image). But by that argument, no one famous can ever do anything nice without a purely selfish motive. Yes - she could have donated anonymously but tbf she doesn't announce the donations, and amount is private (although able to estimated from the amounts of meals the various food banks have said it will pay for, which is huge)

Donating enough for tens of thousands of meals, or to pay a network of food banks in Liverpool's food bill for a year is obviously a good thing to do. And she's done it in dozens of cities worldwide

stillavid · 30/06/2024 09:53

It is interesting how she is held to a much higher standard than equally rich males isn't it?

buidhe · 30/06/2024 09:53

I'm not a fan but admire what she has created out of her own talent. Good on her for making 4bn. No one forces anyone to buy her concert tickets or music.

She does not have to give to charity, a lot of very rich people don't. She does not need to engage with charitable giving to personalise it so that she has that impact in every city she plays - she could have just made a donation to one of the big charities.

She still has lots of money and I don't mind that she has only given away a tiny fraction of it to this. If what is said above about Liverpool is true, she has made a big difference there to hundreds of families who are struggling and in every city she plays - it might be small change to her, but it will be a massively appreciated lifeline for some. Good on her.

That bonus represents 0.0025 % of her earning from the tour.

Does it still look generous

lovelydaysinthesun · 30/06/2024 09:54

"I'm damned if I do give a damn what people say"

I've no doubt Taylor is resilient enough to manage all the hate which comes her way. She's a phenomenal talent and I don't begrudge her a cent of her billions. I hope she makes more.

Mrsjayy · 30/06/2024 09:56

She doesn't have to do anything does she, she could "avoid tax" another way the fact she /her company donated to food poverty is a good thing. I don't understand miserable people who actively hate a singer who brought joy to thousands of people.

notacooldad · 30/06/2024 09:57

Of course it is a tax write off.
Off course she has made billions
Of course it's a PR exercise.
But
Many, many families will benefit from this gesture.
The real issue as,mentioned, is the fact that we need food banks in 2024!

pocketheart · 30/06/2024 09:58

Many celebrities do this sort of thing but we don't know because they don't announce it to the world 🙄
It's a massive pr exercise and yes, it's a huge amount of money but in reality it's like me donating 2p of my savings and expecting everyone to think I'm a saint! It's literally pennies to Taylor Swift.
