Taylor Swift .Generous donations for the UK food banks

I don't know anything about Taylor Swift.. couldn't name any of her songs.
But I've just read she's donated enough money to every food bank in every city she's played to last a year.

What facts? You said people were removed from temporary accommodation to make way for fans which is not accurate. The hotels that are sometimes used for accommodation were full so those needing temporary accommodation were transported to hotels with spaces in other areas.

Of course it's ok to transfer people to hotels further away with spaces. The hotels are businesses first and foremost. Confused

They had access to temporary accommodation removed - that's factual!
You think it's ok to move a potentially vulnerable homeless person from Edinburgh to Newcastle?

TwigTheWonderKid · 30/06/2024 09:36

All my research shows that she will be making over £4bn on this tour alone.

I think that's an obscene amount of money to make from ordinary people, many if whom would have really struggled to afford the tickets for her shows, and I suspect these food bank donations are an attempt to make her look less bad.

No one was forced to buy her tickets. They could’ve listened to her on YouTube like anyone else.

Modern day concert ticket prices are obscene.

That was one person was it not? I'm sure there was a reason behind the location.

Do you honestly think the hotels shouldn't be able to sell all their rooms because they are sometimes used as temporary accommodation for homeless people?

YellowHairband · 30/06/2024 10:53

Please also remember the people removed from temporary accommodation in Edinburgh solely to provide more space for TS fans/tourists.

No. They were not removed. The hotel/b and b rooms were simply booked up so we're not available for those needing temporary accommodation.
This is not unusual, and happens around the Edinburgh festival every year.

HesterRoon · 30/06/2024 10:53

Why does a rich country need so many food banks? That’s the obscenity here.

Mrsjayy · 30/06/2024 10:53

hairbearbunches · 30/06/2024 10:32

I'd have more respect for her if she used her platform to tell Western governments that they needed to tax the shit out of billionaires like her.

You could take £2bn from her from this tour alone and she'd still have £2bn left.

Stop fawning over her. Don't we little people just love the scraps from the big table? If the likes of Taylor Swift were taxed properly, there wouldn't be food banks. Thanking her for donating is engaging in Stockholm syndrome.

Sure !

midgetastic · 30/06/2024 10:53

The temporary accommodation isn't dedicated to homeless people and access to it is removed every summer , and I suspect Christmas as well

It may not be right but it's happened for years

There is a huge housing problem in Edinburgh made worse by all tourists not just one set

I don't think TS fans should take priority over actual vulnerable people, no. I'm shocked you think that's ok.

Nobody was removed from their accommodation, what actually happened was during off peak season hotels like Travelodge have bulk rooms empty for the council to pay for to accommodate homeless people. Due to the demand for the rooms from tourists there were none left to rent to the council.

I don't doubt she isn't the only one causing this - it still doesn't feel right to me though.

Yep, so vulnerable people lost access to accommodation.

Do you feel the same way for all other events where people book hotels?

By that logic no one should ever book a hotel and visit another city or country lest the room be needed for someone who is homeless. Confused

We're not a rich country.
We're a country with some rich people and lots of struggling people.

I read somewhere that TS would never do Glastonbury as it doesn't pay enough to meet her "charitable donation obligations" - ie its all written in to a contract.

So it's us chumps paying hundreds of pounds for tickets allowing her to make said donation.

Don't get me wrong, it's a good thing and she should be commended, but let's not make out she's being totally altruistic here. It's because it makes good business sense, making her even more appealing to the masses, who will buy her overpriced tickets for the next tour.

Edited

You’re annoyed that she uses money she earns from ticket sales to fund donations? What money would you like her to use?

Maybe she could get a Saturday job 😭

YellowHairband · 30/06/2024 10:59

I don't doubt she isn't the only one causing this - it still doesn't feel right to me though.

What's not right is that there is a housing crisis. A city should be able to accommodate tourists for a couple of nights of a stadium show without huge impacts on vulnerable people because there shouldn't be huge numbers relying on temporary accommodation.
But this isn't a TS issue. It's a governmental one.

The council know they're likely to need rooms - it wouldn't be hard for that average amount of rooms to be set aside and not available to TS, or any other, tourism. A caring society would do this, alongside building more actual accommodation.

No they didn't the council sent them in taxis to available accommodation. Hotels are not charities they are business. You are acting like the local YMCA got all the homeless people to roll up their sleeping bags and handed them a cardboard box while Taylor fans entered via the side exit.

Well this isn't really entirely true is it ? People booked up accommodation in B&Bs and travelodge type hotels this happens at every big event and certainly as a pp pointed out the month of August . The problem is not enough supported accommodation for vulnerable people.

YellowHairband · 30/06/2024 11:00

You could say that about anyone who ever books a room in on of the hotels that gets used, for any reason. They've booked it, therefore it isn't available for temporary accommodation. But they've not been "prioritised". They've just booked a room.

I agree that it's not right there is such a massive housing crisis. In the short term we need to protect vulnerable people in the best way we can though.

If you can't afford a ticket you don't go. Simple as. No one has a right to go to any concert. It's not an essential

Also There is no evidence of homeless people being removed from accommodation where they are already staying. so its not like anyone got booted out.
