I don't know anything about Taylor Swift.. couldn't name any of her songs.
But I've just read she's donated enough money to every food bank in every city she's played to last a year.

All my research shows that she will be making over £4bn on this tour alone.

I think that's an obscene amount of money to make from ordinary people, many if whom would have really struggled to afford the tickets for her shows, and I suspect these food bank donations are an attempt to make her look less bad.

What research?

TS tour is the first ever to generate $1b & will likely generate $2b

That is generate - not her earnings.

We're not a rich country.
We're a country with some rich people and lots of struggling people.

We are a rich country. Just some people take far more than their fair share

Noosnom · 30/06/2024 11:25

Taylor was pencilled in to do Glastonbury in 2020. I'm sure she'll headline before long.

Well the Tories just give money to their mates, literally billions

Rather than the people who need food banks

I don't care why she did it, she's still better than that bunch of cunts who actually run a country

Goint to a concert is a privilege.
Eating food is a basic human need to survive.

She got every right to take as much from people who have enough money to spend on going out and give to people who struggle to feed their families.

Do you think anyone who makes a lot of money is 'bad'?

People who 'struggled to afford the tickets' should probably reassess their priorities. Buying Taylor Swift tickets isn't a necessity. However, for some food banks are.
Whatever people think of her and other insanely rich stars, at least she's doing something good with some of the money she has.

beguilingeyes · 30/06/2024 11:33

Shall we just agree that Taylor Swift is a terrible person who should concentrate on changing the tax policies of the world and her fans are deluded/insensitive/callous idiots and put the subject to be ? (massive eye roll).

I'm sure anyone who bought tickets wouldn't be making the choice between going & eating.

Kendodd · 30/06/2024 11:33

Good for her!
Although, I never donate to food banks myself because I hate them so much. Their very existence shames our country. NOBODY should be unable to afford food and the fact there are people who can't should make government hang it's head in shame and act.

And if they were and they chose tickets then that's on them

HueyDueyandBluey · 30/06/2024 11:39

Jesus wept. She's tax resident in the US and charitable donations to foreign charities are NOT tax deductible. It's not a stunt. She gave it freely and with no benefit to herself. Her fans love her without giving to charity.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 30/06/2024 09:46

Yes the message coming out from Liverpool was enough for 11 food banks and 8 community pantries for a year.

Yes she makes loads of money from the tour but she doesn't have to do this. It also seems to be kept pretty low key announcement wise.

Absolutely - she didn't say a thing. It was only after she'd left the cities that a couple of the food bank organisations talked about it.

I think it's a very classy way to thank a city for any inconvenience.

That's an interesting reason for not donating.

Good on TS. She's an inspiration.

And or a tax write off

Are you sure? Presume she’s a US tax payer, if a British tax payer donated to US charity they wouldn’t get any relief on it

QuickMaff · 30/06/2024 11:48

I think she's fantastic and I have nothing but admiration and respect for her - for a few reasons that I've read about before now, but obviously this is a big one.

This is coming from someone who actively does not like her music and switches the radio over if it comes on because it's not my thing at all Grin

thefamous5 · 30/06/2024 11:51

I am a Swiftie so there's my disclaimer.

I would have LOVED to have gone to a show, but I couldn't afford it. That's not Taylor's problem, that's my problem. I have no right to a ticket, it's a lovely privilege if I could.

Maybe it is a small drop in her (well earned) ocean but she has no obligation to donate anything to prop up people in another country. That's our government and our job. The fact she has is lovely - she doesn't have to but she has and anyone knocking her for it - or any successful person who has donated anything big or small - needs to give their head a wobble.

I'm not a Bruce Springsteen fan (incredibly talented bloke but not my cup of tea) and I think it's amazing he's donated.

Instead of tearing down a successful and talented young woman who is making a difference, take a look at the people in charge of our country who do fuck all

Whining about an entertainer providing a service to people who were evidently willing and able to pay for it is truly pathetic.

MushMum · 30/06/2024 11:58

Taylor Swift is a highly engineered consumer product. There is no intrinsic reason to like her music, it is auto tuned exactly same as many other pop stars. The texts of her songs aren’t in any way special. People go essentially because many other people are going. It is very similar to the prime drinks.

Donations are just a small part of that image. It would be nice if people donated to food banks instead of paying for overpriced tickets and went to proms 🙂 or some local pop star show.

MushMum · 30/06/2024 12:03

And yeah well her producers are making money with clever marketing of unremarkable product - which is the same everyone does, but nothing to respect here in particular, except marketing skills.

Should people stop going to Premier League matches and only go to non league games, shop at primark instead of designer shops, greasy spoon instead of nice restaurants. You pay for a higher level of product and different experience. Both ends of the spectrum can produce good results but they’re not the same

Everlore · 30/06/2024 12:08

I think this is a lovely thing to do and it is very much in keeping with the way in which Taylor Swift has behaved throughout her career, which, I should point out, began with the release of her debut eponymous album back in 2006 when she was just sixteen and has gone from strength to strength since then. She is no flash in the pan.
As a devoted Swiftie, who personally thinks she is one of the greatest pop stars of all time, a sublime songwriter and musician and, in my opinion, the finest lyricist ever. She has the rare ability to be both extremely prolific in terms of musical output and consistently superb. I don't begrudge her the huge fortune she amassed, she is one of the hardest-working people in showbiz and thoroughly deserves all the wealth, fame and plaudits that have come her way, in no way do I think she is over-hyped. Her music has brought me and countless others incredible comfort and joy over the years.

@thefamous5 totally agree. Wasn't there a huge backlash when Marcus Rashford dared to get involved with child poverty discussions and put money towards breakfasts? It's as though you are allowed to make decisions that directly lead to hardship in this country, and that's ok because you are a politician, but you're not allowed to try and make things a little bit better for people as a non politician. Know your lane!

Yes, if you're going to say it would be nice if people went for cheaper options than Taylor and donated the difference, you'd better be applying that across the board. Proactively.

After all, if you think you're entitled to an opinion about other people's live entertainment spending, the same principle would surely apply to holidays, clothing, in home entertainment, food and drink beyond what's needed to be functioning and healthy. Discretionary spending leads to a lot of commercial transactions between people that have nothing to do with you but where you can still stick your beak in.

That bonus represents 0.0025 % of her earning from the tour.

Does it still look generous

Earnings, not profit? Take out the huge cost of the tour and all of the money donated in other cities and yes it’s generous.
