I don't know anything about Taylor Swift.. couldn't name any of her songs.
But I've just read she's donated enough money to every food bank in every city she's played to last a year.

I see your Taylor Swift and raise you with Ken Griffin of Citadel. Ken is a hedge fund manager who earned that magic 4 billion in 2023. No going out on the road for him. Estimated net worth 35 billion dollars. Worth reading how much the top 5 fund managers get. And we aren't touching oil and gas CEO or e.g. Elton Musk

All my research shows that she will be making over £4bn on this tour alone.

I think that's an obscene amount of money to make from ordinary people, many if whom would have really struggled to afford the tickets for her shows, and I suspect these food bank donations are an attempt to make her look less bad.

Why should she feel bad because she's making money from her job?
Chances are her years of performing to this level, and being this popular, are limited. Although she may still produce music and perform live it likely won't last forever. Why shouldn't she make money from her career?

It isn't like anyone is forced to buy her music or tickets. It's a choice people make and they spend what they choose to on tickets. If they aren't happy to do so they don't have.

And she doesn't need to do these charity donations. She, and her management company, are choosing to do so. She could, quite legitimately, just not bother and keep all the money herself instead. Would that be better?

It seems the woman can't win either way according to some people.

Longma · 30/06/2024 15:29

Does it still look generous

Yes. Simply because she doesn't have to do it, and no one is forced to buy her tickets. It's a choice she is making. And it's a choice if you buy her tickets.

Many celebrities do this sort of thing but we don't know because they don't announce it to the world 🙄

Neither did she.
The food bank was the one who announced it.

It is interesting how she is held to a much higher standard than equally rich males isn't it?

Compare and contrast to Marcus Rashford who campaigned for other people (the general public/taxpayers) to give money for school meals. Whilst he might have donated some of his £10+ million a year salary as well, all I remember is him demanding “ordinary (not rich/famous/wealthy) people to pay. At least Taylor Swift is using her own money.

How does anyone know what is actually profit? You can't just calculate how much she got from the tour by multiplying the number of seats by the ticket price! The number of people involved in this tour would be incredible and the work involved would take years.

Taylor will be CEO of her company. Money comes in, goes out. What she actually gets paid is known only her accountant and manager. But she may not be popular in 5 years so her earning power is now. For a long time acts like the Stones, ACDC and U2 had the biggest tours. Over 500 million dollars grossed. How long has Elton been working for the Aids foundation. Hes spent obscene amounts on vanity things flowers, photos, art but he has auctioned a lot off recently. Could easily shine the spotlight on people in politics and business jockeying to make more for themselves

willowtolive · 30/06/2024 15:41

That bonus represents 0.0025 % of her earning from the tour.

Does it still look generous
^
£100k for the truck drivers yes it does still look generous. Very, and in proportion, how much do you think they should get then? No TS fan but can't see how it can be argued that it's not a nice thing to do ?^

BrieAndChilli · 30/06/2024 15:41

Sommumsnet is saying that taylore swift shouldnt be making money?
Do you think he same about supermarkets and oil companies - thue all make billions by selling us essential items.
do you also think that corner shops should bot be selling thier goods at a higher price than the big supermarket? Surely they are price gouging and taking advantage of the fact that (normally poorer) people dont have transport to get to the cheaper supermarkets?

the whole world runs on capitalism and commercialism- if musicians didnt tour there would be now sound engineers and companies making video tiles and food trucks and admin staff etc etc.

i dont think anyone can comment on her personal finances - we font know what else she donates to.

God knows what happened with the typing in my post just now !

Yes the message coming out from Liverpool was enough for 11 food banks and 8 community pantries for a year.

Yes she makes loads of money from the tour but she doesn't have to do this. It also seems to be kept pretty low key announcement wise.

Yes nothing like when Rod Stewart donated to a hospital and the whole world had to know

OneShyLimeBird · 01/07/2024 00:21

It’s like when the food bank delivery vans, have the fact that they’re a food bank plastered on it. Or any other community service for someone who isn’t doing well financially have to have vans with the logo and name for what they’re for. Even buses for the disabled. It’s like poor and or disabled people can’t have dignity anymore because the council or whoever want to broadcast it. So humiliating

Foxlover46 · 01/07/2024 00:51

Wow women supporting women here as always 🙈
She didn't have to donate but she did , nobody has to buy her concert tickets but they do
She's not out there telling the world she's done it either

Edited

Surely it acts as an advert for anyone who may want to donate

Interestingly Metallica have been doing this for years, a percentage of ticket sales to local food banks, they hold a worldwide volunteering day and have created educational funds .

Luke 21:1-4
And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, 2 and He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites.a] 3 So He said, “Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; 4 for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings b]for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had.

Matt 6:3
But when you practice charitable giving, do not let your left hand know what your right hand does.

Marcus Rashford forced a change in public policy. I think it's pretty awful that government should have followed a policy so unjustifiable that a professional footballer should have forced a U-turn, but he still deserves the credit.

All Swift has done is donate a small amount of her enormous wealth that she does not need. She's put none of her time or her reputation on the line, unlike Rashford.
