Taylor Swift .Generous donations for the UK food banks

I don't know anything about Taylor Swift.. couldn't name any of her songs.
But I've just read she's donated enough money to every food bank in every city she's played to last a year.

@TwigTheWonderKid Are other celebrities making equal bonus payments to their tour staff?

The percentage of her income is irrelevant. It's life changing money for the people receiving it, and that's what matters.

Vettrianofan · 30/06/2024 09:58

Thelastbitofketchup · 30/06/2024 09:39

And or a tax write off

Yep not as altruistic as it seems.

TwigTheWonderKid · 30/06/2024 09:54

That bonus represents 0.0025 % of her earning from the tour.

Does it still look generous

She’s done over 100 shows and the tour has helped other businesses earn lots of money too so it’s definitely a good thing in my eyes. Many staff on her tour have earned big bonuses that they wouldn’t have received on other tours so while it’s made her even richer, she’s not hoarded the financial benefits.

How much do other big stars donate on their tours?

She also offset her carbon footprint by 2.5x the required amount and gave 50k in bonuses to her backing singers/dancers

Not to mention each city made millions in revenue from her visit

She was due to play Glastonbury a couple of years ago until the pandemic hit, so that's nonsense.
You don't hear anything about Springsteen/Ed Sheeran/Madonna (insert stadium act where applicable) doing anything similar, but TS does it and that makes her a bad person? Jeez.

Springsteen donates a lot to food banks

AgathaMystery · 30/06/2024 10:04

This woman cannot win no matter what she does.

If she gave her drivers a $1,000,000 bonus, someone would still say ‘only one million?’ - if you are a truck driver, $100,000 is a life changing bonus. Make no mistake. Hell, for most people it is a life changing sum.

It is not TS problem that the U.K. has food poverty. She has done a good thing and, I hazard, cares not one bit about people’s petty opinions.

GalacticTowelMaster · 30/06/2024 10:04

Just checked how much the rolling stones were charging for their last uk tour. Looks like it was about £105 for cheapest ticket which I think compares to Taylor Swift? This was on a very quick Google so could be wrong. I know a lot of the taylor swift inflated prices are resales. I don't remember this much hand wringing about the rolling stones prices, or them donating any money.

Mrsjayy · 30/06/2024 10:07

I think several of the Foodbanks commented that she donated it was on our local news when she played In Edinburgh although it wasn't a private donation but so what .

autienotnaughty · 30/06/2024 10:09

Crunchymum · 30/06/2024 09:42

I read somewhere that TS would never do Glastonbury as it doesn't pay enough to meet her "charitable donation obligations" - ie its all written in to a contract.

So it's us chumps paying hundreds of pounds for tickets allowing her to make said donation.

Don't get me wrong, it's a good thing and she should be commended, but let's not make out she's being totally altruistic here. It's because it makes good business sense, making her even more appealing to the masses, who will buy her overpriced tickets for the next tour.

Edited

I wouldn't say she's over priced. I paid £100 it's a 5 hour show . I've paid £30-£50 for 2-3 hour shows (in same seats ) by less famous singers than TS

The resale prices are mental though but she doesn't benefit from that

Mouswife · 30/06/2024 10:09

Lots of celebs do this kind of thing. The beckhams are known for charity work. It’s a lovely act from Taylor swift but it’s a total PR stunt that is deliberately leaked.

CelesteCunningham · 30/06/2024 10:11

I think she's pretty good to work for in terms of health insurance and the like.

It's easy for people in her shoes to screw over the people who work for them but it doesn't appear that she does.

I don't particularly know her music but I really admire her.

Fair enough. Although was that the less expensive ticket?

I guess I've just been reading about people taking kids (so then a £100 ticket becomes £300 / £400) and it just seems such a lot of money.

But I'm happy to retract my "overpriced" comment. The rest still stands 😀

I’ve read on social media that European prices are much less than US prices so lots of US fans have flown to European countries to watch the show so they can combine it with their summer holiday.

stonkytonk11 · 30/06/2024 10:17

I don't think the tickets are over priced either, we got really decent seats for £130 each. How much is it to get decent seats for a West end show for example? She sang for over 3 hours and the 'show' was incredible!
Great that so many will benefit from her donations.

WannabeHealthier · 30/06/2024 10:17

Amazing. Thank you Taylor.

I don’t care what the percentage of her earnings is… just the fact she bothers to make these donations to communities around the world is enough. She actually gives a shit unlike many other rich people.

HighOnMaiden · 30/06/2024 10:18

Metallica have also done this for many years. They founded an organisation called ‘all within my hands’ in 2019 and donate to food banks in the each city they play along with donating to educational programs etc.

mitogoshi · 30/06/2024 10:19

@GalacticTowelMaster Yes the tickets were fairly expensive but I still paid less than for many other gigs attended recently - I had standing tickets too, not the cheapest option. Peter Gabriel and Genesis both cost considerably more for instance. £109 for a large gig ticket is just the going rate, the cost of putting each night on is considerable especially as it was only one night in Cardiff, the large profits she makes are down to the sheer number of nights she performs over years.

I can't criticise her at all, she's supporting local families with her donations, local businesses benefit hugely, suppliers to the stadium etc

littlefireseverywhere · 30/06/2024 10:19

stillavid · 30/06/2024 09:53

It is interesting how she is held to a much higher standard than equally rich males isn't it?

This is exactly what I think. I’m not a TS fan, but don’t begrudge her working very hard & putting on what seems to be a great show. Why shouldn’t she make money from it? Her donating is also not the norm for other artists is it? I think she’s fab and think a successful young male singer wouldn’t have to jump through such public perception hoops.

That's brilliant of them. Funnily enough I suspect however no one has ever said it was just for PR or criticised them for it.

Kartoffel54321 · 30/06/2024 10:20

It is good that struggling folk will benefit from her PR stunt.

She is a business and no matter how talented she is, without the huge amount of staff who work so hard on her behalf to make everything happen, she'd basically be a woman sitting on a stage with a guitar.

Why should they not get a fair share of the profits of their labour?

But this is true for any business which makes massive profit and where the staff are only paid a tiny proportion of that.

I'm not saying she is not being "generous" by industry standards, but it makes me angry that we have got to a point where people are so accepting of the massive disparity in wealth and salaries from the top to the bottom and where ad hoc grand gestures rather than proper, equitable pay are applauded rather than questioned.

When we were in Vegas Adele was just starting her weekend residency we looked at tickets they were over $1k.
I can see why people travelled to see TS in Europe if that's typical concert prices.

Abitboring · 30/06/2024 10:23

TS has a certain value that allows her to sell tickets at a certain price. It's supply/demand. Shed charge that regardless of whether she's going to make donations. Because her business is doing exceptionally well she pays her staff above average, they have insurance and get high bonuses. This is how a business should work. Most don't. They still pay lower staff a pittance or the UK wouldn't need food banks.

So no, TS has more ethics that the average business person. Also, she's not taking home 4bn from this tour. You need to deduct costs from that, incl any bonuses she's going to pay.

Her actual carbon footprint isn't offset though. The damage is done.
