If you turned 14 in the early '90s

What did you get for your birthday presents?

I genuinely can't remember and my soon to be 14 y.o asked me the question.

It blows my mind what 14 year olds ask for nowadays that just were not part of my world back then, I had no interest in make up, skin care, expensive trainers, tech etc.

Oh my gosh, that's reminded me that I got my ears pierced for my 14th birthday!
Parents were working so I went on my own and felt very brave.
When I got back to school after the summer holidays about 90% of my year had done the same!

MummyJ12 · 10/06/2024 12:36

I also had one of these (got it for Christmas though, and I loved it!)

Money that was mostly spent on clothes from parents and grandparents. One granddad used to specify that the money was to be saved, so that all went into an account and built up until I got hold of a cash card for it when I was 16. I think mostly tapes and CDs from brothers and other relatives. Makeup palettes, earrings, that kind of thing. Teen-taste bedroom accessories, like a cool handset for the landline extension.

KevinDeBrioche · 10/06/2024 12:40

I got definitely maybe on tape and money for clothes

ZazieBeth · 10/06/2024 12:40

Lates eighties. I seem to remember a knock off Walkman by Boots Electricals that cost about £20.

Is there coffee in your nebula? ☕️

Mogloveseggs · 10/06/2024 12:43

ChocolateBiscuitsandaCuppa · 10/06/2024 12:46

I was 14 in '93. I got a little Goodmans hi-fi. It was my joint present for birthday and Christmas.

My dad had seen an offer for a cheaper one and thought it would be nice. We went to see it, tried a CD the shop had, and the sound quality was truly awful. So with a bit of negotiation, he and I decided on the Goodmans one instead even though it was a bit more.

I loved it. It came to university and a good few share houses after, even though the CD player was a bit temperamental and one of the speakers was a bit dodgy after my dad accidentally tore its cable on one of the moves! Possibly my favourite childhood birthday present ever.

Wonderfulstuff · 10/06/2024 12:47

I was going on a school ski trip and so got things for that like ski socks, long sleeve t shirts (no performance wear then!) and ski goggles. My salopettes were borrowed from a family friend and the ski jacket became my winter coat until I left school.

A tennis racquet.

Olivegardenishome · 10/06/2024 12:57

Rollerskates

I turned 14 in 1990.

The sorts of birthday/Christmas presents I remember getting in the 1990s were things like:

A Sony Walkman
A radio cassette recorder with a double tape deck
A watch - either a Swatch or one with a 'moon phase' dial
A cheap camera (obviously not a digital one!)
Portable telly for my room
Body Shop toiletries and perfume (White Musk being my favourite)
Albums (tapes, of course!)
Videos (eg a favourite film, or a compilation of a TV series, or a band I liked in concert)
Silver jewellery (I seem to remember that those fob-chains with a bar on them were particularly desirable)
Cheap accessories from places like Topshop or Miss Selfridge or River Island - costume jewellery, leather bracelets, scrunchies, bandanas etc
Stationery and art/craft stuff - ring-binders, fancy pens, branded pencil cases etc
Band t-shirts from HMV
Books

Other things I remember people getting as presents (or the sorts of things people saved up our pocket money/Saturday job money for) were:

Roller blades
Trainers - Nike, Adidas, Reebok or LA Gear
Doc Martens
Timberlands
Levi 501s
Nintendo Game Boy
Sega MegaDrive console
Sports holdalls to use as school bags (the Head brand ones were particularly desirable)
Benetton t-shirts

14 in 1990 and honestly can't remember, but likely to have been CDs and maybe earrings.

Dustpantsandbush · 10/06/2024 13:06

Money and CDs; Oasis and Dodgy and Spin Doctors

Baklavamama · 10/06/2024 13:08

Money to buy clothes from esprit or country road (Nz)

I got a Walkman in the shape of a wedge. It was red and had a shoulder strap 😂

I had that one!! It had a speaker too, like the worst ghetto blaster ever Grin

OriginalUsername2 · 10/06/2024 13:12

I remember this one a bit. I got Bang On The Door birthdays cards from all my friends - the ones that had funny personality based cartoons, like “Pea Brain” and “Groovy Chick”. And most likely lots of “smellies” from The Bodyshop.

ethelredonagoodday · 10/06/2024 13:13

1992 for me.
I can't recall, but I think maybe money? . I loved river island and top shop at the time, so probably spent lots of it there, possibly also in the body shop or on CDs, mood rings or pencil tins, which were a definite thing in our area. 🤣
A year or so later I got some red kickers, which I absolutely loved!

WaitingForMojo · 10/06/2024 13:18

DM’s

KitsyWitsy · 10/06/2024 13:33

Walkman, Nintendo.

daffodilandtulip · 10/06/2024 13:33

I can't remember either. Just goes to show we don't need to flap about buying our kids the right things every year 🤷🏼‍♀️

lucindasspunkyfunkyvoice · 10/06/2024 13:39

CDs or tapes even

spearker · 10/06/2024 13:39
