If you turned 14 in the early '90s

What did you get for your birthday presents?

I genuinely can't remember and my soon to be 14 y.o asked me the question.

It blows my mind what 14 year olds ask for nowadays that just were not part of my world back then, I had no interest in make up, skin care, expensive trainers, tech etc.

TheKoalaWhoCould · 10/06/2024 13:43

@BestZebbie@TheDefiant
Is there coffee in your nebula? ☕️

Edited

Love the smell but would rather have Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.

LoinChop · 10/06/2024 13:45

I can remember exactly what I got because that year my mum gave it to me a day early by accident. £40 in a card. I look at my tweens and teens and wonder how that move would go down in their world of "my birthday lasts a week" and endless expectations of presents and parties etc...

gamerchick · 10/06/2024 13:47

I was 14 in the 80s and I got £6 in cards. I only remember because my grandad tried to take it to pay for stuff being delivered for the fire.

Wouldn't get away with that these days probably Grin

ChocolateJigsaw · 10/06/2024 13:48

Stereo with a multi-cd stacker so you could load six in at once and then use the remote control to choose which one to play. It was the most high tech thing I'd ever had. It was amazing. Plus there were still 2 cassette tape players (one with record function) for making mixed tapes. Amazing

DexaVooveQhodu · 10/06/2024 13:55

Albums of favourite bands, soundtracks of films or west end musicals. Probably computer games too (I think we were still using the Amiga at that time though we got a Windows PC by the mid 90s - I remember being obsessed with Lemmings and SimCity)

Not that different from what my 14yo wants now.

WannabeHealthier · 10/06/2024 13:56

Albums on CDs- when I was a teen in the 90s these included Right Said Fred, Dina Carroll, Eurythmics…. then a couple of years later I improved my Street Cred with Pulp and Oasis

It was always focused around music- so merch, music, a CD player and Walkman, I even got a karaoke machine one year!

WannabeHealthier · 10/06/2024 13:57

Oh and good quality blank tapes for making mix tapes! Hours of fun!

Crucible · 10/06/2024 14:01

Drawing and painting materials.

WitchyBits · 10/06/2024 14:14

I was 14 in 93. I got a bottle of Jean Paul Gaultuer classique, a gold figaro necklace and a fancy ( non utilitarian) lace bra and knickers I had seen in Victoria's Secret.

Flatulence · 10/06/2024 14:28

I was 14 in the mid 90s and I seem to recall getting a couple of CDs and a bag or maybe a jacket. Maybe some vouchers for Boots or HMV. That sort of thing.

FusionChefGeoff · 10/06/2024 14:28

Money
CDs
Maybe roller blades?
Shopping vouchers

HollyBollyBooBoo · 11/06/2024 04:54

Such fab answers, thank you! Feeling very nostalgic. DD has loved reading these.

I asked my Mum and she seems to think I got a tv for my room as we'd just moved into a new home and money from grandparents.

Tickets to go see E-17

thaegumathteth · 11/06/2024 17:05

I think I got my hair permed which remains one of the biggest mistakes of my life

AffIt · 11/06/2024 17:11

I was 14 in 1994 and I don't remember what I got for my birthday, but I do remember getting Newman & Baddiel Live and In Pieces on VHS for Christmas and my dad (a fairly open-minded and liberal chap) being utterly horrified by it...

WittyFatball · 11/06/2024 17:13

Late 90s but:

Baby G watch
A hoody that said 'Golddigga' on it
Platform trainers
Wide legged jeans from Bench

Probably an album (likely on a cassette tape as I dont think I got a CD player until mid 90s) and some Body Shop stuff. Bath Pearls etc.😂

These are all things you wouldn't have seen in the early 90s!

MugofteaandWordle · 11/06/2024 17:18

1994 - clothes from New Look, cds and jewellery from Elizabeth Duke.
A meal out at Zaks as well (American restaurant in Norwich).

MugofteaandWordle · 11/06/2024 17:19

Agh! Cassettes even - not cds

LittleGreenDuck · 11/06/2024 17:36
  1. A hi-fi system with my first CD - Queen's Greatest Hits. A trip to Cadbury World and probably something for my horse.
StaySpicy · 11/06/2024 17:38

Probably a CD player. I think I owned a CD by then.

BottomlessBrunch · 11/06/2024 17:43

14 in 1997 and I think it was a navy and white kappa Tracksuit, whatever the newest 'NOW' CD was, body shop stuff off friends and always a box of galaxy truffles.
