If I turned up for dinner without any notice?

What would you rustle me up? Too late to go to the shops on Sunday so has to be what you already have in.

My favourite and super easy dish. Spaghetti with garlic, butter, Capers, stock and lemon juice with loads of Parmesan cheese and black pepper.

Ponderingwindow · 09/06/2024 15:31

A cheese sandwich or a tin of soup. Maybe a bowl of cereal. Some fruit. Some lettuce leaves.

I don’t cook very much and only buy ingredients as needed.

I think I've now decided to try this: https://thebeardedmums.com/2021/04/28/homity-pie/ Looks like it makes a lot so there will be enough for an unexpected guest. I always over-cater so it would rarely be a problem. Can always stretch things out a bit with veg.

BananaLambo · 09/06/2024 15:32

I have a lentil and chickpea curry in the slow cooker. Going to serve it with jacket potatoes and salad. I also helped a neighbour last week and he’s given me a nice bottle of wine to say thanks, so we’d have a glass of that too.

fussychica · 09/06/2024 15:32

The freezers full so if you turned up early enough you could pick your meal.

Otherwise it's salmon Wellington, new pots and veg with a black cherry and almond tart with creme fraiche and a drink of your choice, g&t, beer, wine etc

dudsville · 09/06/2024 15:33

It's spanikopita tonight here!

TakeMe2Insanity · 09/06/2024 15:34

We have rice soaking, spiced mince (raw) defrosting so maybe we’d shape into meatballs. Followed by raiding the freezer for veggies - none in the fridge.

HippeePrincess · 09/06/2024 15:35

We can always make something from the freezer/store cupboard , veg risotto, carbonara, french toast, fish finger sandwich, though it’s rare that there wouldn’t be enough of our main that we were already having especially bulked out with some extra carb as we often save a portion for lunch or the freezer.
Tonight we have steak, potato pave and stuffed mushrooms, there’s too much potatoes and mushrooms so we’d just thinly slice the steak before serving and possibly add some salad with blue cheese dressing.

Absurdgiraffe · 09/06/2024 15:35

Veggie rice, or Dahl.

What are you bringing with you?

One of the unidentified tupperwares in the freezer whose nature is not clear until defrosted.

Ah yes, the UFOs (Unidentified Frozen Objects).

I had a whole thread about this once. I found something mysterious labelled 'CEDRIC GROSS' in the freezer, and had no idea what it was. I even fed it to DH and we were still none the wiser.😂

Noshowlomo · 09/06/2024 15:38

I’d tell you to feck off. Don’t be knocking on my door asking for dinner you cheeky git. 😂

Bbq1 · 09/06/2024 15:41

Um, a small fry up
Pasta in a sauce
Cheese/Beef sandwich or toastie
Frozen pizza
All followed by ice cream /rice pudding or yogurt.
We buy most of our meals daily atm but we are having takeaway tonight so they can happily join in with that!

DaveWatts · 09/06/2024 15:42

I could rustle you up something from the larder like cacio e pepe? Or a sort of 'bits and bobs' meal out of the fridge - jersey royals, asparagus, salad, small cheeseboard.

Otherwise it'd probably be cheese on toast 😁

FieldsOfFlours · 09/06/2024 15:42

If you’re a close enough friend to be turning up unannounced I would assume you’re upset or your car has broken down etc so we are getting whatever takeaway you want, on me!

however if you’re really not wanting a takeaway you could enjoy a frozen pizza, a chicken salad, a burger, most variations of pasta with or without meat (lasagne, meatballs, cheesy pasta, carbonara) and some garlic bread, and if you’re ok with meat being defrosted in the microwave I could do almost anything since we’ve just stocked up at the butchers.

Wine

I have a neighbour who does this...........I cancel whatever was going to have and crack open the wine, along with cheese and crackers which I always have in😂

PeppermintParty · 09/06/2024 15:06

Spag bol. Hope you like it.

Tough shit, if not, seeing as they turned up uninvited! 🤣

alcoholnightmare · 09/06/2024 15:45

I'd give you a choice of guosto recipes. I can only cook from a recipe so we have two guosto boxes delivered a week

scrapsontheside · 09/06/2024 15:46

Nearly anything!
Well stocked "pantry" dry goods spices etc
Freezer full of meat (partner's)
Tofu of different varieties (knots/ firm/ silken etc)
Seitan or tempeh
Selection of salad (homemade dressing of you want)
Bottles of chickpeas or loads of different beans
Big mix of veggies kohlrabi carrots courgettes etc
Homemade loaf so toast etc
Fresh rhubarb in the garden
About 30 different teas two kinds of coffee
Booze might be a bit light.. got a bottle of red, white, asti a couple of gins and four different tonics
What do you fancy?!

There's definitely the occasional total mystery, or a weird surprise like when something reddish you defrost under the delusion it is a tomato sauce for pasta turns out to be stewed rhubarb...

Dearg · 09/06/2024 15:47

Various pasta dishes - bolognese, macaroni cheese, prawns with chilli, broccoli & pine nuts.
Eggs - scrambled , frittata etc
Lentil dhal with rice

Or takeaway. Only 2 of us, so rarely bother with a roast, but I am ok with raiding the pantry and throwing things together.

Floralnomad · 09/06/2024 15:47

Mushroom and cheese omelette with salad and wedges which is what we are having .

RockyRogue1001 · 09/06/2024 15:49

Lol that you think the average mner would open the door to an unexpected visitor, @JackThayer .

Most on here would be logging it with 101

(Edited for typo!)

rockingbird · 09/06/2024 15:49

We have a roast chicken dinner on Sunday, oh and a gammon as son no1 likes a blooming carvery mix..! One is having rice and roasted veggies and the rest are in for the full roast. Take your pick.. 😆 desert is Eaton mess with fresh cream or Greek yogurt. Pink Prosecco and non-seco.. same every week!

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 09/06/2024 15:50

Was just going to say I wouldn’t have opened the door so you’d be heading off hungry 😂
