I don't understand how drones didn't see him or anyone smell anything at the beach bar place. It's a mystery

Thats a sick thought! Could you imagine being in that beach bar then wandering off to make a private call and discovering that.

Disturbia81 · 13/06/2024 22:58

@Treestumpp I guess no-one ventured up in that bit. Yeah it would be a shocking discovery.. I just wish he was found sooner.

What i wonder is did the search parties record their activity over that Saturday - drone and helicopter footage I mean. If so I wonder if they watched it back and checked how obvious it was/wasnt.

Disturbia81 · 13/06/2024 23:18

@Treestumpp After the photo I unfortunately saw, I don't see how they couldn't see him unless they didn't cover that bit. But drones could cover so much area and he was found near the abyss they kept going on about so surely they were flying there.

Treestumpp · 13/06/2024 23:21

@Disturbia81 Before all the talk of cctv I did suspect foul play if you know what I mean, it was mysterious how the discovery was made early morning, and like you day, I thought all of saturday afternoons activity was focused in that area on the abyss/caves etc.

Passiflora2 · 13/06/2024 23:28

The cameraman who saw him initially said helicopters had flown over the area multiple times. It’s very odd.

BirthdayRainbow · 14/06/2024 18:00

There's a program on about Dr Michael's work tonight, BBC1.

BreatheAndFocus · 14/06/2024 18:00

Perhaps the helicopters did fly over but weren’t really actively looking at that area so close to the bar and were just flying up to the higher areas to properly start looking? As MM was by a wall that might have psychologically ruled out that area in their minds, ie they’re looking for him in open countryside.

@Disturbia81 I saw the photo too. It really shook me. I hope so much that no-one close to him saw it.

Waitingfordoggo · 15/06/2024 12:27

Oh dear 😔 Sadly expecting the same fate for the American who is missing.

Thisoldheartofmine · 15/06/2024 12:52

Could it be that such tragic incidents while not common are not incredibly rare ?
And they are now coming to our attention because of recent events with poor MM?

I think this is probably true. It’s a good thing that perhaps all this publicity will make people think twice.

Thisoldheartofmine · 15/06/2024 18:15

@Allshallbewell2021 interesting, but hard to know what % of that nos of reported deaths in that study were of tourists being active - perhaps ill-advisedly- in the heat.
Also worth noting this remark
Only a small share of heat-related deaths come from heatstroke. In most cases, hot weather kills people by stopping the body from coping with existing health problems like heart and lung disease.

Allshallbewell2021 · 15/06/2024 18:48

Yes of course; I was just interested to see the high numbers.

FrancisSeaton · 15/06/2024 21:11

So awful how many people have lost their lives due to the heatwave in Greece. I really do hope it raises a greater awareness and people realise yes it actually could happen to me...

I don’t believe that’s true - and it doesn’t tally with what the initial PM said. He was found in a position that suggested he sat/lay down with his feet upon a rock, like is advised if you feel faint. Then sadly passed away a short time after.

You've only to see the photos on the net to see that he is lying face up with his left arm over his chest and his right arm to his side. His umbrella is above his head. He probably had that over himself but it blew upwards and away after he lost a grip of it.

I thought he was brilliant at what he did and everyone that met him said he was a great bloke.

Another tourist found dead.

I think it's important to point out that this isn't peculiar to Greece. Heatwaves hit lots of parts of the world at various times.

Yes I agree, I saw that unfortunate photo too and it does very much look like he purposely laid down.

It's been reported that it looked like he had laid down with his feet up on a rock and that is why they assumed that he felt faint.

In that heat, fainted turned to death due to his body being superheated presumably.

The CCTV video from the marina also apparently made it look like he spent a long while (5 minutes was reported) looking for a gate to get through to the marina. If only he had spent that time moving down to the sea but his movements at that point were also unlaboured and speedy so he probably felt relatively well at that point.

It's all so sad. Had it happened at a time there were more people there, he might have been able to shout to them.

I've put all this but there's been so many differing and opposing situations reported that it's hard to know what happened.

I rarely get upset about celebrity deaths but his has got to me. He was such a vital human being.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 17/06/2024 18:07

Is it thought he got lost trying to get back to the acvomodation? Or was he going for a walk? I am surprised he would try to go for a hike in that heat and without a map or phone.

I don’t know but I reckon having done the boat trip around that headland he figured if he stayed near the coastline he’d get back to town eventually. He must have thought it was quicker / flatter / easier than it was. Maybe he planned to stop off at the beach for a cold drink and a rest or a quick dip. We’ll never know what his thought process was, just such a shame he was seconds from being safe.

ellebelli · 17/06/2024 21:35

I find the whole thing so sad. The fact his last minutes where captured on the CCTV, so close to help/the sea.
What I find so sad is that time of death was reported as being about 4pm, the time his wife and friends would have been getting the boat back to the apartment!!
