Some posters must be absolute cretins in real life.

I do think that, broadly speaking, we have a too relaxed attitude to hot weather. British people are so obsessed with the sun, getting a tan and so on and they don’t understand or don’t care about the dangers.

The phrase ‘Only mad dogs and Englishman go out in the midday sun’ was coined in 1770. We’ve learnt nothing over the centuries.

I’m speaking in general, not about Dr Mosley specifically.

Very true, I agree. Despite a couple of heatwaves in the last few years we're just not acclimatised to it. 95% of the time we have coolish weather.
I have family in southern Europe and the locals call the Brits "the roast beefs" - because they can always spot a Brit by their red, sunburnt bodies. A pop group there even released a song begging Brits to cover up in the sun and wear suncream.
I'm not talking about MM here but we all need to take the risks of sun and heat more seriously.

ducktapez · 09/06/2024 12:22

Clearly he didn't tell them he was going to walk to where he did. His wife and friends had no idea. We know this because the search and rescue didnt look there until MM was spotted on CCTV walking in that direction. Nobody assumed he would head that way is it made no sense.

Yes. It’s worse on other social media platforms, fools posting about how there is some conspiracy or cover up. It’s so shocking.

Quite a few of us on thread 3 yesterday were paying attention to the media reports on the routes he could have walked, and one possibility was indeed the path from Pedi to Agia Marina, where he has been found. However... can any of you figure out how on earth he ended up at his exact final resting place?

The path from Pedi takes you into the south side of the Agia marina, where it leads to the cafe, bars and beach area. There's a google earth 360 photo on there which shows where the path from Pedi enters. But his body was found on the northern side, part way up the boundary fence. It's a most unusual place to be. Was he heading up or heading down the hill? There's no path there so the terrain must have been very difficult to traverse.

@ducktapez yes i posted this earlier today

people need to stop thinking he was ill and his wife let him walk home on his own.

he wasn’t ill. he fancied a walk. Maybe his wife told him he shouldn’t go but he didn’t listen. He climbed the steps to check out his route before setting off (witness at initial beach).

he wasn’t going back to the villa. He purposefully set off towards the marina for a walk. in hindsight it was a silly decision but we all make them. He wasn’t aimlessly lost trying to find the villa. That theory makes no sense.

the simplest option is usually the correct one

  • he wanted a walk
  • he headed towards the marina
  • he made it most of the way
  • couldn’t get down the south side so walked round the other side
  • either heart attack, exhaustion or fell

I think it is really inappropriate to be blaming family and friends. Dr Mosley was an adult with the ability and right to make his own independent decisions. You can't force someone not to take a walk, even if you think it is unwise. It is also possible that they only thought he was going as far as Pedi and that he only made the decision to walk further once he reached there.
Maybe Dr Mosley was significantly fitter than other members of the party and whilst he felt confident to do the walk, the others didn't feel up to it in the heat.

We really don't know what conversations he had prior to setting off. The family will be struggling with so many "if only I ..." thoughts as it is, but we can't blame them.

GingerbicciesPlease · 09/06/2024 12:26

The best account of finding him is on Sky News (linked to on X/Twitter.)

In case anyone is interested....(I watched it)

The first alert to something unusual was spotted by a Greek cameraman on a boat in the bay. The mayor was also on the boat.

The cameraman thought he saw something odd on the hill behind the beach cafe.

They took photos from the boat and went back twice trying to get closer to the shore to get better shots.

Then they went to the shore and enlarged the photos (using an iPhone he said) and could clearly see a body.

A waiter from the cafe was sent up to have a look and discovered MM.

The cameraman also said the area had been searched from the air about 20 times by a helicopter and drones in previous days.

Very saddened to hear the news today. I only hope he didn't suffer. Think we'd all hoped for a good outcome.

I was saying to dh earlier, Michael Mosley might have done this type of thing often on holiday. We were all mostly assuming he was trying to get back to the accommodation, but he might have regularly gone off exploring even in hot weather and sadly this time was caught out.

It's not really any of our business but naturally we will wonder why he was where he was.

BettyUnderswoob · 09/06/2024 12:30

This is awful news, but of course was to be expected. RIP Dr Michael.

It’s saddening how some unbelievably cuntish posters STILL coming on to put the boot into MM and his family. Disgraceful, shameful behaviour.
We still don’t know exactly what happened. He came into some misfortune. He may have made an error of judgement, like we all do on occasion because we’re human. His wife doesn’t control him and his children weren’t there.

XjustagirlX · 09/06/2024 11:18

So it does appear that he was heading on a walk towards the marina. He would have approached it from the south entrance though. But he was found at the north side.

this makes me think he couldn’t enter the marina from the south side and he decided to walk round to the other side and then he collapsed.

i wonder if the gate to enter from the south was shut? Or he couldn’t see the gate maybe.

if he could have got down on the south side maybe he would have got help sooner.

Sorry I must have missed this post. Im glad youre asking the same questions as it's really unclear. Is there a gate at the south side or is that just a guess? It would make sense, as I cant see any other reason why he'd be on that north side. I wonder why the whole area is fenced off anyway. I read on the Times page yesterday about other people making the walk from Pedi to Agia Marina, seems only about half an hour walk and there's that cafe when you get there so it seems strange to lock a gate during daylight hours when there may be people wanting to visit.

Allshallbewell2021 · 09/06/2024 12:31

He may have wanted to go before they did, he might have just thought he'd eaten something odd, he might have wanted you to avoid a boat trip. But he was qualified to make his own decisions!

DramaLlamaBangBang · 09/06/2024 12:32

RIP condolences to his family. Gutted that this is the outcome. I hadn't noticed how many of his books I had, or how much if his advice I had taken on from his podcasts etc. By all accounts he was a lovely man, and everyone he worked with was hoping for a better outcome. At least it looks like he didn't suffer for days stuck in a cave.

Some of you are awful. This is not really much different to any missing persons case or accident. Everything is normal until it isn’t. Let me say that again - everything is normal until it isn’t.

He took a wrong turn is what it looks like. It could happen to your loved one.

He managed to get to a place where he would be found. He was being clever even though he was injured in my opinion.

The above is just my opinion and not fact. But the point on accidents and missing persons is not.

XjustagirlX · 09/06/2024 12:34

@ducktapez ye i posted earlier that the route is a walking route that some people do so there must be a way down. He either couldn’t get though the access or didn’t spot it.

more likely I expect he didn’t spot it due to not thinking straight due to the heat

beatrix1234 · 09/06/2024 12:35

The Greek press is saying the following: “While the exact cause of death is yet to be determined, initial reports indicate a possible heart problem leading to the fall. "According to the first information, some problem occurred in his heart, and he fell on the rocks," reported Aristidis Miaoulis,

Exact cause of death will be found in autopsy, but diabetes can be tricky when sugar levels go down and you’re under 42 degrees, dizziness is very common.

OnehundredStars · 09/06/2024 12:36

Mumsnet at its finest.. kicking people when they are down

of course an intelligent, energetic man will want to go off an explore and have a bit of time to himself without someone needing to be with him ! I am married for a decade and a half and my dh doesn’t know my every move for gods sake

more respect is needed here

Yes because all Brits go red in the sun, nobody tans at all!
